    Absolutely love the intro using the map, gives so so much context to the upcoming video and brief about the past too.

    I have been to the Pasar and done some grocery shopping with locals. Also bought some quality T-shirts. Had some nice fresh fruit mix deserts and food at the Medan Mall.

    Doug, did you really turned into 60 and didn’t told us? If yes please let me know, cause 60th birthday deserves presents 🎁 🎉😊 CC: going with Planet Doug on a south East Asian market is always a pleasure for me. A five snack challenge would be the icing on the cake ❤

      Yes, I turned 60. In fact, I turned 60 back in early 2023, so I've had some time to get used to it. 😎 It does feel like a strange number when I say it. My mental image of a 60-year-old doesn't match my mental image of myself. But math doesn't lie, and the years pile up behind you.

    Hello Doug, I am going to Medan on 26th January, I want to treat you for lunch. Will you still in Medan during that time ??

    • @PlanetDoug
      @PlanetDoug  9 месяцев назад +1

      That's very kind of you. That would be nice. However, if I stick with my current plans I won't be in Medan on January 26th. For various reasons, I ended up with a flight out of Sumatra from Banda Aceh. So I will likely be working my way toward the north at that time.

    Like @WanderEats I also enjoyed your map overview. I was wondering how far ahead do you usually plan your evolving journeys. Do you have a system? How long do you usually stay in a particular location before you decide to move on? Or is it all mostly spontaneous? 19:07 Will you be hopping back and forth between Indonesia and Malaysia indefinitely? Any big location changes coming in the near future?

    Medan makes Jakarta or even any other big cities in Indonesia looks like heaven, really rough

    • @PlanetDoug

      Medan is definitely a bit rough around the edges. It doesn't really affect my enjoyment of the place, though. I like the rough edges. It feels like my kind of place. 😁 And the people are just as warm and welcoming as anywhere else in Indonesia. I've noticed that RUclips is filled with videos from people highlighting the modern downtown core of Jakarta. Those videos are very popular. But I'm sure Jakarta has older, more traditional neighborhoods that look similar to the areas I've been exploring here in Medan. RUclipsrs just haven't been visiting them.

      @@PlanetDoug i live in Jakarta so i saw it by myself, jakarta does have this kind of area, but still, this old area seems to be all over the place in Medan

    Cc the central market looked like it was built in the late 80s, but has had very little maintenance. Sort on the grimy side. Merchandise looked ok.

      You and me, both. 😀 It even feels strange to me to have the number "sixty" come out of my mouth when someone asks me about my age. It doesn't seem possible, and it feels wrong somehow. But the numbers don't lie, and they add up to sixty.
      In a strange twist, I always feel a bit guilty when I tell someone that I'm sixty years old now. I feel like they will be disappointed to hear that I am such an old man. I think they would be happier if I said a much smaller number. But time marches on...

    At 31.18 it seems like he was speaking English with a local slang, asking 'where you go?'.

    • @PlanetDoug
      @PlanetDoug  9 месяцев назад +2

      I still get confused about that. I always get mixed up and I don't know if people are asking me where I'm from or where I'm going. In this case, it was also quite loud in there, and I couldn't really hear what he said. In those cases, I just guess and since people usually ask me where I'm from, my default answer is to say "Canada".
      I think I leave a lot of confused people in my wake. They will ask me about my favorite food, and I say, "Canada." They ask me what camera I'm using, and I say "Canada." 😀
