Good share. I can see how you can easily adjust the measurements to customize this for any side fire box you like. Good tip on using an old bucket handle to. Thanks.
@TheBlackDog73 Be careful with black pipe. Any part that's exposed will rust. If a cap rusts to the nipple, it's a pain to get it off. On our drums we have removed the black pipe and replaced with simple refrigerator magnets. Works like a charm and no worries about the caps getting stuck!
Great video at the right place and right time for me. Just bought a Brinkman Trailmaster and can easily use 10 x 12 x 6in for the Brink basket and use your technique. Thank you!
Hey Ector, I would hate for you to loose fingers or part of your hand which you leave lying in front of the cutting blade of the grinder. Should the blade catch or become restricted it could get forced onto your hand and do some serious damage. That blade cuts through steel like butter, one can only imagine how easy it will cut through your glove and hand. Think safety at all times
Aloha bruddah, Thank you for sharing. I made one and it fits perfect. I would like to show you my pictures of my progress. Let me know how to send. Mahalos from Hawaii...
Awesome instruction on the build. I'm also in Houston and was wondering if you could point me in the direction of where the good deal is on expanded metal... Thanks for sharing
I picked up expanded metal from my nearby Home Depot in Spring (North Houston). They had it in convenient labeled/printed carboard packaging sleeves near the sheet metal, which was on the same aisle as the machine screws. The HD website is pretty good and allows you to see if the item is in stock at your location before you drive there.
+J Mark They cut their expanded metal to 24"x20", which means the base 12"x8", making a 12"x8"x6" charcoal basket. White Arc sells a charcoal basket which is 10x10x6 that says it will work in a Brinkmann, so if you cut yours to 22"x22", yours should work with no problem.
Great concept love the idea of weld free I'm going to make one of these for my SFB.I think i'll use a 2 x 4 and stand on it and use a mallet to bend sharp clean lines because i'm anal though lol .
Went with the black pipe and stainless steel bolts. Should be done by tonight. Thanks for all the input and answering my questions.
We need more people like you. Excellent manufacturing skills. Good job Sir.

Thank you for this. Looks much easier than I was planning to do.

I just made my basket today using 9ga 24"x24" expanded metal from home depot. Including new cutting wheel, it was $25
Fun fact: That same sheet of expanded metal costs $30 alone today in 2022. Thanks for the tip though thats what i will pick up
Nice an simple, a little bit of muscle but thinner gauge expanded metal, and presto :)
is that galvanized metal? If so you might poison your food when the heat releases the zinc fumes
where in Houston did you get the expanded metal??

Curious to know what you do about ash from the charcoal/wood? Do you rinse the UDS after each cook or just scoop it out? Great work!
Good job. Thank you for sharing.
you ROCK for muting the grinder. headhphone users across the tube thank you
MadSmokerBBQ he didn't...... don't know about anyone else, but I still heard every cut?!?
I am sure someone has already said this but make sure it is NOT galvenized steel unless you wanna end up in the hospital or worse.
Good idea. I'll make one thanks for sharing. But please don't put your hand or fingers in front of that cut off wheel.
You just saved me cash and I am finishing my drum tomorrow. Thanks! Great stuff. What size bolts did you use for legs?
so it's 24 by 20, but which way did you cut it? at which ends do i make the 6" cuts?
For the air intake, what's the best pipe to use the galvanized or black pipe? Thankyou.

What type of expanded steel is that? Looks stronger than 3/4 #9.
what are u using to catch the ash so u dont have to flip the dang thing over every time i need to empty the ash out of the UDS?
