"Hi. My name's Glenn Trunley. I'm the head of store design for Tumi, globally. I contacted Regency to see how we could dig a little deeper, and they introduced me to Tori, one of their lighting designers.
I think that in the industry, at many levels, the lighting is overlooked and sometimes seen as something that's too expensive to really come up to the level that perhaps one would want. My experiences is that if you work with the right people, that you can find something to fit your budget, and you can find a way and a means of getting it into your store and making it work. One of the biggest challenges we had is that we sell a lot of black luggage. Black is a very difficult color to light in stores. We did have some colorful products as well. Getting the right color temperature was very, very important to us, and that was one of the biggest challenges.
The second challenge was the restrictions in power with the Article 24 things that were going on in the industry, were making it increasingly difficult to have the right amount of light for us. At the end of the day, our job is to make the product look great, and we found a solution that really even made our darkest, dumbest, black luggage look really, really good, and also maintained a really nice color spectrum through all of our more colorful merchandise.
Fortunately, with the work that we do with Tori and Regency, we're able to dial that in to something that was very consistent, that we were going to use in all of our stores going forward, and also go back and retrofit stores. They're our in-house lighting experts and we count on them, particularly working with Tori and Cameron, to help us. As we keep trying to raise the bar, they keep coming up with new products. Whether it's raise the bar in terms of we need more exceptional and high-end lighting or if it's in terms of we need to do some value engineering, at our kind of bread and butter stores, and helping us find products that can do the same for less money."
