  • Gaming Pastime reviews Doom 64 for Nintendo 64.
Developed and published by Midway Games, Doom 64 was released for the Nintendo 64 in March, 1997. Doom 64 recycles the gameplay of the previous games but it's the dark tone and atmosphere that really makes it stand out.

I'm not usually the one to post, but I feel it's necessary. I'm not quite sure where you are coming from with this review. First of all, this game was released in 1996, over 20 years ago. Choosing to review it now heavily skews the perception of this game. I will explain why:
This was one of the first FPS games on the N64, and one of the last ports of the game to consoles. When it was originally first known that it was being released on the system, the N64 was called the Ultra 64(Later changed due to copyright claims by Konami). At this time, it was expected to be a direct port from PC. The company being bored w/ the original concept decided to scrap the port and make a whole new game. The engine was overhauled w/ newer features, the weapons and HUD were redone. The enemies were recreated, sounds, animations, textures, you name it. All completely new and exclusive to the N64. The only other versions to run as quick were the PSX which shared similar music, and the Jaguar (which couldn't play music w/ sound fx). Having the game since day one, I remember never having any sort of issue with the control setup. There are multiple reasons; No previous console had an analog stick (PS1 added theirs after the N64 released to compete). This was a single analog setup on the PS1 controller. The dual shock dual joystick setup came later in it's life. They actually got sued for it around when the PS3 was going to launch. The only other control setup known at the time was for PC which was default to:
    UP - forward
    Down - backward
    Left - turn left
    Right - turn right
*You could not choose which keys you wanted for every input unless you knew how to compile a cfg file for that, otherwise you had to use the strafe keys " < " or " >" or resort to holding alt key to use straft left/right on keys left and right. So it seems odd that you would want to turn using buttons and use the joystick to strafe, which was never used in any dual joystick or even controller setup that ive ever heard of. Turok used the joystick to turn and look up/down while using the c buttons to move forward/back and strafe left/right. I'd have to say you use a very rare setup on an N64 controller. For me, personally, I've used the Joystick to turn and move forward backward while using c buttons left and right to strafe. I've also used dpad to do the same thing while using the L R buttons to strafe. You could even use the joystick w/ the dpad if you really wanted to, that's the whole point the controller brought to the table vs other consoles.
Now onto the next thing. Being that this game was released over 20 years ago. Why review it now? Especially after you've stated that there are far superior versions on PC that would give you better experiences and then resorting to using an N64 controller which is 20 years old. So you ended up using a modded controller setup on an emulator anyway? What are you trying to accomplish? This game obviously doesn't hold up well in today's standards, considering it was one of the reasons why these standards are here in the first place and have evolved very much since it's conception. I.E. WASD was not a thing when doom came out. PERIOD. It evolved over deathmatch and many fps shooters over time which circled back to Doom and old FPS games in their source port updates like the ones you play I.E. DOOM EX.
Playing this game bare bones from 20 years ago instead of using an updated engine is a bad idea in my opinion. Like you said, you probably shouldve just waited and done the PC release. But this is why I bring all of this up.
You should either review this as a game from 20 years ago as a current look back, using what was out at the time to compare it. I.E. PSX and other somewhat good console ports. Considering that there were no norms for controls at the time and N64 had just introduced the analog for consoles so it was untapped territory. Considering that WASD wasn't a thing and you had to resort to holding alt key to actually strafing on pc at the time. Setup for controls in PC was also limited and circle strafing wasn't well known back then. People who played doom on consoles mostly had no trouble with PSX or N64 controls. Especially on how you could remap. Most games at the time wouldn't let you remap like they do today, including the doom ports that are out nowadays.
Or...You should review this game using the new ports using new technology (keyboard, mouse, etc) using Hi resolution display setup, and customized mapping to your favor. Keeping in mind this game is 20 plus years old, where it came from and how it holds up to today's clones (Games that don't really innovate like Doom did back in the day). And how the community after all this time is still huge and growing.
Do what you will. Avid doom player and gamer. Wanted to share with you because of concern. Take it or leave it but I wanted to say my peace. Take care.

I offer this info based on what I had used for the controller back in the 90’s. I remap strafing right and left to the d-pad. Use to the left bumper and features like sprint and strafe to the up c button to get them out of the way. Grip the middle and left arms so the the thumb stick is in your right hand. Derived that from what was called left hand controls in Turok 1 N64

I have WSAD for forward, back, strafe left and right, Q for Dpad left and E for Dpad right, then left and right arrow keys for analogue stick left and right respectively, and also the up arrow for opening/activating then down arrow for firing. Shift for speed and Tab for map. It works well.

Love your reviews man but you definitely sound bitter about this game for some reason especially at the end... Doom is one of my favorite games of all time. I started in order from Doom 1,2, Final Doom before playing this on my N64. And with that said I totally agree that this is one of the most underrated classic FPS. Its criminally underrated. To me it was the perfect sequel. To me Doom is a sprite based game and this is about as far as you could push a sprite based shooter. Adding updates to the demons, great lighting and atmosphere plus the almost survival horror like soundtrack. Overall just such a great atmosphere while keeping the game for the most part a sprite based Doom. Also it ended up on the N64 which makes it even more hidden in the sense that the PS1, Saturn and PC made more sense as a system to play FPS and or adult games (ok more specifically PC). I have no issues with the controller. Its a system from the 90s and thats the way it was meant to played back then. Sometimes I definitely think Doom 64 is my favorite in the series and its odd since, again it was a console based version made by Midway. I think part of your opinion seems to come from playing this game so late and hearing what people say about it

I found that the Brawler 64 controller is quite nice with Doom 64. I turn with the stick (and move forward if needing to run), then strafe and move with the C buttons. Having two move forwards and back might not work great on the original N64 controller, but the Brawler 64 lets you reach both shoulder buttons, the z button, and dpad without changing grip. So I had enough buttons to go around.

    • @Immorpher
      @Immorpher 4 года назад

The stick and c-buttons on the Brawler 64 is effectively a two stick in a way (given OG Doom was keyboard movement). And technically you don't need to scroll through the weapons. If you press the weapon switch multiple times you will skip past weapons. But sometimes my memory isnt good enough for that haha.

Doom 64 was meant to introduce those who weren't computer gamers to the game. When it was released there were many people who owned the N64 game console who had never played a PC computer game. And many who didn't own a PC! Understandably, technology has changed a lot over the last 20 years but for it's time the N64 system and games like Doom 64 fulfilled a niche that was much appreciated. To compare Doom 64 with computer equivalents isn't really fair nor valid.
In my opinion Doom 64 was challenging, scary and fun. Especially during its initial introduction when I first played it.

I was able to beat the Mother Demon with only two secret keys thanks to while still at the single digits levels watch on RUclips on how to get to the secret levels! Did the secret levels from 12 and 18 and would use my rocket launcher to take down the regular demons from the door on the key that I missed and saved from there and with many tries saving my Unmakyr ammo for the Mother Demon herself each time I eventually would dodge majority of her projectiles while firing my lasers on her with my unmakyr repeatedly until she went down! I manage to beat Hectic twice and both times was a hell of a hectic struggle! Once on "Be Gentle" easy mode and the second on "Watch Me Die!" hardest mode! My playthrough where I beat the campaign was on "Be Gentle".

I love this game series. Doom 64 was actually the one that got me into the franchise in the first place. I'd recently gotten ahold of my uncle's old N64 console, and Doom was one of the first games I bought for it. After beating all the levels, and played it inside and out, I decided to get Doom 2016, since I was thinking about playing it anyway. I had a huge blast playing it, and the series became my second favorite in gaming, second to the Batman Arkham games. After a bit, I found out that Doom 1 and 2 were available for the xbox for only 5 dollars each, and I breezed through those as well. I was planning on playing Doom 3, but I guess I just felt it was boring, compared to all the others in the franchise. Maybe I just thought it was too slow, compared to the nonstop action throughout the previous four games I played. Either way, I was a bit surprised I lost interest, since I love survival horror games. Anyway, I'm replaying Doom 64 for now, and just waiting for Doom Eternal to drop.

DooM64 is the missing link between the end of DooM ll and DOOM 2016, so many people forget or don't even know the existence of this game and then get angry when told that this game is a *storyline cannon link* between those other two.
Even people born between DooM64 & DooM 3 releases and that the only DooM game they've ever played is 2016 vehemently argue that 2016 is a non-cannon reboot (which technically DooM 3 was) but simultaneously ignore the games made before year 2000, the DoomSlayer's bio in Quake Champions that confirms it, and the very deep lore (art book/strategy guide, all in-game PDA's/narration, theory websites) that has been available for the 2016 game with the teasers of info from Eternal we've seen so far.
Eternal is going to add so much backstory (remember, Hugo & Marty said they were creating an entire DooM Universe at the first Eternal teaser reveal) and fill in arguable gaps that there will then be no question about DooM64 being a storyline-cannon continuation of DooM ll and prelude link to the 3rd generation games.

I think you are a little hard on it in your summary. You say you expected more from it than Doom II, but, why? Doom 64 still managed to do a fair amount, a whole new megawad to explore, wholely redesigned textures and sprites. The unmaker, demon keys, and engine improvements are pretty nice too. I think of Doom 64 as somewhere between a nicely done commercial megawad (certainly better than Episode 4 in Ultimate Doom and Final Doom) and a whole new game. It easily adds as much as Doom II. If we apply a consistent standard, I think it deserves a fair amount of praise. Maybe we are expecting too much from games these days? It is like saying that Mega Man 2 was bad because it was so much like Mega Man 1 (hell Mega Man 6 wasn't all that different from Mega Man 1). Mega Man games are what you expect them to be, Mega Man games, and they have Mega Man gameplay with little bits of iteration between sequels. Doom 64 is a Doom game, just like you'd expect it to be. It has Doom gameplay and is iterates a bit on Doom. And all that isn't bad.

But, you are right, if they had gone from the 2.5D Doom engine to a whole new 3D engine they could have done more, but I would still ask "Why?" You already have the perfectly good Doom engine that'll make feel even more like Doom (rather than say Quake). Doom 64 is totally a custom megawad. Much like Doom II was, and much like Ultimate Doom (over the original release), and much like Final Doom, even though we kinda call them sequels still. I say it is more fair to judge Doom 64 among the their company, rather than expecting it to be its own thing like say Quake, Doom 3, or Doom 2016.

Doom is legend! I had all three "next gen" consoles when this released and a PC I built (my first) just to play Doom on- 486DX2. I remember getting the PlayStation version for the lighting and music. I was very irritated that the Saturn version was absolutely destroyed by Carmack. You see, Doom for the Saturn was said to be originally better than the PC version and Carmack wasn't pleased. He forced the dev team to scrap the mostly finished game and start over. Further he made them utilize only one processor (Saturn has two 32-bit processors) and it turned out terrible. The Saturn version should have been the best as it was a 2d powerhouse. I remember being totally thrown for a loop when I found that ID was allowing Nintendo to have an updated version with better graphics....seriously Carmack?!
At any rate, I reluctantly purchased Doom 64 and wow, what a game! I loved every bit of what I experienced and yes, the levels are so confusing. However, the game was bitter sweet. It reminded me of the missed opportunity for Doom on the Saturn. The more Doom I can get the better. The N64 controller just sucked back then as it does now. I'm not an alien with three hands Nintendo.

One of the devs did a Q&A on Doomworld a while ago and said that they weren't given much creative freedom with Doom 64, they wanted it to feature time travel and all sorts of new environments. That along with the restrictions for N64 cartrages versus PS1 CDs made them rescale the scope of the project and make it a very safe expansion pack style sequel with some new tech such as faux 3D and scripting.

I think you’re a bit harsh on it not being original enough. It came out not long after Doom 2 and Final Doom, and 64 is far more original than either. It’s more Doom and the level design and combat is great. It feels more challenging than Previous Doom games with more tricky puzzles. It is Doom 3 to me (if Final Doom is 2.5).
I would say the only significant negative is that there’s (as you said) a bit too much backtracking looking for something. But that shoot the switch puzzle (and many other puzzles) were well made.

Anyway Doom64: Left hand look and shoot, right hand over the c buttons to move which mirrors the controls from Turok. Why on Earth would anyone want to move forward and back with one hand and left and right with the other? That's Goldeneye and I never saw the sense of it.
On the other hand, I am left hand-ish so, sure, D pad is also valid for movement I guess. But as I use my mouse with my left hand while still being right hand dominate, I'm just better off using a controller anyway.

DooM64 EX isn't the only one, getting tired of people saying that's the only option other than using an N64 emulator with the Rom.
DooM64 Absolution TC is an option to EX and in my opinion, better (Absolution was actually going to be the original title but Nintendo had such a hard-on with having a 64 in their game titles it was changed). All you need is the doom2.wad iwad and d64mus.wad file to run it. It runs off the DoomsDay Engine source port and plays smooth like butter. There was an updated version made (Absolution.1) that re-adds multiplayer back into it and some minor adjustments, it requires the same 2 files but you additionally have to hunt down and install a specific version of jDooM (doomsday v1.8.6) as it's not included with the ATC.1 downloadable file).
Both EX & ATC have their own pros and cons, but I'm just tired of people making DooM64 reviews using EX and not mentioning ATC at all, or saying EX is the only option outside of emulator/cartridge.

I definitely agree with playing Doom 64 EX instead of emulating the n64 version or playing it on actual n64 hardware. At least n64 emulation means you don't have to use the n64 controller.
But the rest of the complaints I don't really get. It's almost as much of a sequel in terms of what's added as Doom 2 is over Doom 1. Some of Doom 2's enemies are missing, but looking at what they cut, they cut the ones that would be the worst to deal with on the n64 controller, so it wasn't haphazard. Then again you said to play Final Doom over this, so I guess you just love chaingunners, revenants, and archviles.
I like the atmosphere in Doom 64 because it's not the same as Doom and Doom 2. It's darker, creepier, and that makes it a good change of pace after the fun and slightly silly original Doom games.
Final Doom is one I just don't like, because the difficulty balance isn't fun for me. UV feels too hard, particularly some of the BS traps, but bumping it down just to HMP is too easy. And that's just Plutonia, because TNT Evilution is pretty bad on any difficulty.

  • @zacharydrahm825

a few demons and guns were removed because there wasn't enough video memory to fit them in the very small limit RAM size N64, they could've but would've resulted in slower framerate and Midway (not Id Software) wanted to have the highest frame rate they could get, that's why the legend of Zelda, Turok and of course GoldenEye were the slowest games on N64 because they were too big for the N64. Some games even required the RAM expansion pack for the N64 console to play with higher frame rates like Donkey Kong 64 which i think came with the DK's game box if i remember correctly.
Sorry dude, as a full doom fanatic i would have disagree about this game being a recycled doom I&II. That's like saying Red Alert 2 is the same as Red Alert 1, just no.

    • @Gamingpastime64
      @Gamingpastime64  4 года назад

It is running on a modified id tech 1 engine with a new coat of paint. They could have done more than make it feel like a custom megawad that needs to be played with a controller. And the games you mentioned were also some of the best and most popular for the system. GoldenEye and Zelda were groundbreaking for the time. I don't remember anyone (at the time) complaining that the performance was ruining their experience.
I would have rather seen the developers do something more interesting to make it feel like a more refreshing experience. The gameplay is recycled. And it's a fine game but let's not pretend there's anything about it that puts it up there with legendary games as if it was responsible for some brand new new never-been-done-before style of gameplay or mechanics.

If l lose it, I can get it again. Knowing Bethesda, they might screw the new version of the game with the Bethesda.net login. If it has 21:9 support that doesn't show how graphics appear and dissapear because of that aspect ratio and/or high FOV like 85 or more, a skybox option (like EX had), and the 20th anniversary version of the soundtrack (the first level's song had extra sounds that weren't present in the original), then it could the best version on paper.
