  • I visit the Portland Japanese Garden in hopes of capturing their iconic Japanese maple tree in full fall color. Lines of photographers, fog, and late turning colors are all a part of this one. Did I get the shot? Watch the video and find out!

0:56 yes, totally agree! backlit leaves are just way better than even vs even lighting

Been there all 4 seasons. One of the most beautiful Japanese garden outside of Japan. Enjoy!

Beautiful composition. The tree you went to shoot is so played out. So seeing a new perspective of some other parts of the garden is more interesting IMHO.

Thanks! I agree it's a well trodden path to an overdone photograph, and the garden has a lot to offer besides this one tree. But, it's still a fun tree to photograph and add to your portfolio.

The late morning shot, for sure! It really glows.

Definitely, the late morning shot. Both are awesome, but my favourite is the last one.

would like to know what dates when you took the video. The leaves look still very green. We plan a trip to Portland this year. Want to make sure we would pick the right dates to see the yellow leaves

This was October 28. I went back on November 3rd and the tree was perfect. It happens quickly - depending on the weather it can happen mid to late October or early November. You can go to the Portland Japanese Garden website starting in September and they usually update the fall color status every week.
