Years ago I did some extensive testing with my neighbourhood crows (hooded crows in Berlin). With nuts their preference is (everything without shell, from best to worst): cashews, then nothing for a long time, walnuts and Brazil nuts, almonds, hazelnuts, peanuts. I did not include pistachio in the test (because they are quite expensive and it is quite some work to take them all out of the shell so I rarely offer them) but they are closer to the top of the list. My spoilt brats have stopped taking peanuts from me a long time ago. Exception: peanuts in their shell (because they are so suitable for storage I guess; quite similar they get much more excited with walnuts in shell; but if I just offer walnuts without shell I get some snarky looks. During the breeding season (when I get visited by the breeding adult crows only because they wage war against each other on my balcony then and this would be very very bad for the young crows...) the adult crows clearly prefer meat (and even fish fingers/sticks) over cashews. Probably because they know they must not feed nuts to the nestlings (might kill them). But during winter the majority of my crows prefers cashews even over meat (even fried minced meat). I didn't try mice against cashews, though 😆 In theory superworms and house crickets are the best food for them (i.e. the nestlings) during breeding season. But it is a lot of effort to feed the superworms or insects correctly before feeding them to the crows. And the crows are not particularly fond of this high-maintenance food. And I get it. Crows love lumps of food. The insects weigh nearly nothing. The whole box of crickets may be as much (or as little) as a single piece of goulash... So I make sure that they get a lot of meat, fish, and egg yolk (quantity is probably even more important for the nestlings than quality). Being fed by me the crows do not have to waste time for looking for food. So they have the rest of the day to find some insects on their own. And all "my" fledgelings look great. No feather damage. And some of them look like an adult crow half a year later. A daily meat-fish-egg-only diet makes it possible... (after several years of such a diet my two killer crows are such chunks that they even take on adult cats together; not teasing or harassing the cats - threatening them, successfully!!) 😆🖤 I love them.
The dried cranberries in my current trail mix are eliciting the crow equivalent of an eye roll. I feed a young single crow who calls her parents to join. She has very nice manners. Her father, not so much.
They do like peanuts but they crack them open only to reject them lol. They look at the expensive organic walnuts I get for them like it is beneath them. so I have stopped buying walnuts.

As someone pointed out, this could be a case of "size matters". It would be interesting to break up the cashews into small pieces and see what happens... or put a pile of slugs next to the nuts - I hope that works!
Peanuts aren't really a nut, I believe they are a bean and they aren't native to North America. Peanuts are grown from bushes, and cashews from trees. I doubt crows have had them in their diet much in history so the results aren't surprising to me.

Crows like all birds really like peanut butter in my experience, more so than just peanuts. Just make sure you check the ingredients, and be aware of the food standards in your country, specifically be wary of aflatoxin. Also make sure the salt concentration isn't too high, depending on the amount you feed them. If it's a maximum of 1.0 % salt it should be fine unless they eat a large amount of it.
@@crows714 No worries, I don't mean to come across preachy, just obviously you want to help the birds, not hurt them. Aflatoxin won't be listed as an ingredient. It just depends on the food standards I your country what is considered an acceptable level for foods to contain.
@@truthntellingHi, can you cite a study or provide a reference? Most of what I read is that birds need a little salt, just proportionally less than people.

Glad you enjoyed it, I am still learning how to get quality footage and sound.
Birds sense of taste is only about 1/10 of a humans so I doubt they kept choosing the cashews because of the taste.
Good point. The Cashews seem softer. I don't know if that makes a difference.
I doubt it. I touch their beaks against the food and it appears they taste it instantly and reject or accept it.
Softer, more digestible.

They take what is bigger first if it was cold pizza squares they would eat it first I feed them all the time 😂
One factor that could affect things is that cashews may be a nice delicious change, but not necessarily what they would prefer over time.

The cashews are bigger but they easily break it to pieces.
