Another GREAT vid, Prof Dave!!! Thank you, my friend. Just my usual donation to request a Prof Dave style take down of the Shroud of Turin. Apparently some recent study has got the Shroud community up in arms. Some WAXS analysis showed the shroud is 2000 years old. Whether you do it or not, I'm always a Prof Dave fan. Thanks!!
Professor dave, are you going to cover other areas of biological anthropology like population genetics, genetic disorders, theories of evolution, etc ??
Always love the insanely good fast deep dives you do. I was literally explaining to my girlfriend about dwarf island elephants, and this just covers that x10 more. I want your autograph framed beside Sir Martyn Poliakoff.
There’s A LOT of drama going on right now in the community about H. Naledi that you should cover! It’s a text book example of burden of proof, with the critical side emphatically stating “we’re not opposed to the idea that this is a burial site; we’re just pointing out that the evidence given thus far does not warrant this conclusion” before eviscerating the claims made by the pro-ritual camp that have already made its way into a Netflix doc. Kinda reminds one of dealing with creationists, yeah?? It goes to show you that we’re all psychological beings and none of us are perfectly rational. :)
Not really even remotely similar to dealing with creationist imo. I watched the doc and thought it was very intriguing.I thought they made a pretty good case for the cave being a burial site.
@@84dariustwin it’s certainly unfair to compare real scientists to fake ones, but what I’m poking at is the constant refrain you hear from creationists and believers: “hey, it’s on you to prove that God DOESN’T exist!” Ahem. No, it’s not! The drama with H.Naledi is ultimately a great example of how and why science works… it’s self-correcting! (The issue with the original pre-print that’s been pointed out by systemic review is that geo-chemical data representation appear to be deliberately skewed. It’s like p-hacking with extra steps.)
Have said people offered a possible alternate explanation for what it might be, if not a burial/ritual site? I am incredibly curious to see what other hypotheses have been put forth.
@dr.nebulanovae8398 Yes, actually! In anthropology and paleontology, the default position for early hominid remains is "natural deposit", and there's plenty of evidence that this is the case for the rising star Dineldi cave system (especially geo-chemical evidence). In particular, rain water and floods wash a lot of surface sediment into deep areas of the cave and create excellent conditions for fossilization. It is most likely the case that the these particular remains were naturally deposited by this mechanism. This doesn't rule out ritual burial! It just means that there is currently insufficient evidence to pivot from the default assumption of natural deposit.... Which is something that really caught the ire of the community as Berger (and friends) explicitly argue that best practices should be to assume ritual burial for newly discovered ancient hominids until proven otherwise. At best, this is profoundly naive. At worst, it's them arguing "we're correct by default even if it turns out we're wrong" in a pre-print, non-peer reviewed article that they immediately took to the media and spread as gospel truth. It should be noted that the Dineldi cave hasn't even begun to be 'complete' in its excavation; it's going to teach us A LOT over the decades to come! www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0047248423001434
My understanding is that most paleo-anthropologists do not accept the extraordinary claims that naledi buried it's dead and made cave art. That documentary is very sensationalist. You can see the almost religious fervor in that video. Kudos to the team for excavating it, but they need to stop with the unsubstantiated claims.
@@ProfessorDaveExplains Oh what I meant was like it being a culmination of videos basically edited as one video in a sequential order, basically like a playlist, but you just watch it at the same time instead of one video at a time. I was just asking, that's all. I respect if you don't do that, as some just do that for views or just as an alternative method to playlists. Crazy to think of being under 4 foot tall and living on an island with huge birds of prey after you. Might even cause the hobbits to tell tales of dragons. 🐉🦅
A lot of people in Indonesia actually claim to have met floresiensis. They're described as looking exactly like humans, short with dark skin. I don't know what the professor thinks about that, potentially a criptid.
Seriously guys, I'm on cree so nobody can attack me while I say this; If you could give him a voice @ 2:12, would it not be an Asian voice, like Japanese, Chinese or Mongolian or something?? Weird question because I can’t find the video: Didn’t Dave do a video on Jordan Peterson? I just saw him be the least funny kill tony guest of all time 😭
Your statement that the evidence is overwhelming that the size of homo floresiensis is due to island dwarfism is incorrect. Island dwarfism refers to the shrinking of the body size of an otherwise larger species, that generally does not affect the brain size very much. The opposite is true for Homo floresiensis, which has a disproportionally small brain for its body size. Also, its skeletal features are unique and very different from Homo sapiens, so what is the species that was around that shrunk due to island dwarfism? The only other known species that was locally around at the time was Homo sapiens, which is morphologically vastly different. Sorry, but your presentation is too simplistic.
@@ProfessorDaveExplains Thanks will check it out. Love your content and love learning new things. Just learned they're not exclusive classifications.. Hominoids = Apes (gibbons, great apes, and humans). Hominids = Great apes (including humans, but not gibbons). Hominins = Humans and their direct ancestors.
I have a theory about Naledi. 1.8 million years ago there was a group of 50 Homo Habilis, one was making some tools, his name is Shuroo, while he was striking a core, his wife Boolina walked up to him and said "there's this group of tall hairless people a mile out", Shuroo yelled out "everyone get your axes and sharpen your sticks, we have trouble", everyone looked at him like he was crazy, until the scout yelled "STRANGERS". In 10 minutes or so they were ready, and went towards the group ready to kill, but then they saw that these people had no weapons, so everyone put theirs down. This was a group of Homo Ergaster, and mostly women at that, so they all got to talking, and what do you know, a bunch of little hybrids were born, there was about 30 of them, and they went on to evolve into Naledi, the end.
Professor Dave has taught us the definition of theory, yet you use it as wild guess still anyways 😂 interesting thought though, likely even possible but without genetic material we'll never know.
