      It’s amazing and not true Digital Audio workstation always denotes computer and software. How ever you configure it, that is your workstation. Ever since the renaissance, the MPC is DAW and it looks like the sp-404 is heading that way too. The only true standalone is the sp-1200. Hence the extremely high price tag!

    Great vid! My primary work is on post production for film and TV so hardcore DAW use from beginning to end is the norm. For me Dawless is no mouse on a screen, letting my big screens go into screensaver mode while I create sequences on an SP404 and Circuit Rhythm and improvise with a guitar and bass. Recording back to the SP or using the MPC as a tape machine is absolute bliss and incredibly inspiring. Hands on pads, synth encoders and pedals is mainly how I create my music for the last couple of years and whatever the label I love it.

    One point of DAWless you are not mentioning is the direct and quick creation process. Push 3, it is a great device I own and I know my way around. And since it is coming from the Ableton DAW the degree of editing is skyrocketing. Stil, I never understood the pressure you have to apply to force the buttons down... Working with Push unfortunatly is much slower in comparison to say the Syntakt/Digitakt. The succes of modern DAWless devices is character, swiftness and creation process. I do love MPE Pads on Push 3, but do they support my music making? I realised you wrote "That has SOUL" as showing the MPE pads. Well yes, and thanks for telling, but than, it is just one kind of soul. I always feel a little detached when using the Push 3 SA.

      Not disagreeing at all…your comment makes perfect sense to me and I agree with the spirit of it completely! But for the sake of discussion: what’s a “computer” in this context? What is it really that you *need* to not have? Is it a big screen that takes your eyes away from the instruments? Is it internet access that distracts you? Is it too many options available that lead to analysis paralysis? When we say “I do DAWless to get away from the computer” - exactly what are we trying to get away from? 😁
      It seems to me that MPCs and Maschines and Pushes ARE computers, but they are computers that we accept as being part of a “DAWless setup.” So…why? What are the things about laptop and desktop computers that we are trying to get away from, that MPCs and Pushes don’t have? 😁

      @@bodhibeats8257I am working on a computer to make a living. Continuing to use the computer for making music is tiresome. Playing a real musical instrument is ideal. In the past year or so I am learning to play Piano which is a very rewarding experience for me. It would probably be funny to you but most of the music I've created in recent times is on the Novation Circuit Tracks and Microfreak. What I like about this very limited setup is the immediacy it provides for bringing my musical ideas alive, and most importantly I can do that in my free time away from the computer. What I currently miss is just one additional multi-timbral/multi-part synth/groove-box in order to be able to express more freely. I don't need the million options of the computer. So, yeah, the device can even have a Daw inside, but what I need is just to be able to create the sequences of the multiple parts, to tweak/design the sound, to add some modulations, some effects, to use/record samples and to do the mix in the end. Something like that. :)

    DAWless is a quest some people take to find the right combination of tools that best facilitate the magic they want to create. I have had a few iterations of all hardware, hardware with computer DAW (Ableton) and now all software (still Ableton). The Push 3, for me, is an amazing instrument. And the fact that I consider it an instrument first, before DAW, is because it reminds me of the freedom I felt when I bought my first synth workstation the Ensoniq SQ1. I can make music anywhere around my house or at a friend’s house and utilize all of the custom synth and FX presets I have created with Ableton. I love the Push 3 exactly why you stated, it’s a new paradigm that blurs the line between hardware and software.

    I'll have to be honest. I'm a Push 2 user and even though it's a nice device. Ultimately, it just makes me slower at using Ableton. I'm totally amazed as well, that we still can't pick sidechain inputs on the device in any live device that isn't compressor.
    My DAWless setup is Novation Circuit Tracks and Rhythm which is just fun, limited, but ultimately an enjoyable experience.
    Push 2 (which is the same as as Push 3) just doesn't flow. I mean why are the buttons so hard to press. Such a workflow killer!

    I love the concept of the Push 3.
    I bought it so that I could make music away from my PC monitor after a day's work, but with the familiar environment and tools/FX.
    If I like something better, I can still finish it relatively easily in Live 12. I've always lost so much time familiarizing myself with new workflows, like with Elektron, for example, and that's now completely eliminated.
    Nevertheless, I'm still missing so many little things for a complete producer experience, such as MIDI files and Groove pool... surely that can't be so difficult to implement? :)

    Always been somewhere in the middle - but honestly recently sold all my groove boxes, drum machines (after I sampled them) and gone mostly back "ITB" kept my piano for spur of the moment kind of stuff and a nice big synth.
    The push 2 helped a lot with that, I recently sold that too to get a 3 shortly - as it means I can sell my linnstrument toboot. Think I just wanted some quick access to noodling melodies and inputting drums and went too far into groovebox land trying to attain that.

    I know it was super subtle but that shot of you unplugging the unit and moving to your couch is exactly what the Push 3 was meant for imho. You may not be able to play an entire 2 hour set in its “dawless” state but that’s not the point (at least in its current form). It’s to be able to work on a single song in whatever environment you want. I personally prefer having the computer when using Ableton but I can absolutely see the use case of this device. Great stuff as always 👊🏼

    Great video as always! For what it’s worth, I’ve been using Push 2 very much like this for years. I don’t really have a desire to leave my computer behind, but I’ve been very inspired by the workflows of the “DAWless” communities. I produce and jam almost exclusively with Push 2 as the “brain” and rarely need to touch my mouse or look at the screen. I sequence external gear, use hardware effects as sends, and even grab a long USB cable and work on my couch. The Push 3 looks terrific. I’d love to have the enhanced MPE (though Push 2 gets you pretty far with polyphonic aftertouch), and standalone mode would be nice on the rare occasion I leave my house. But, really: you can work in a very “DAWless way” with Push 2, as well, and I haven’t been compelled to upgrade because I sort of feel like MPE is the only thing that I’d really be gaining for my personal use cases. You can totally dive into this “paradigm shift” with a Push 2 as well, I’d say.

    For me, the difference between DAW and DAWless is that I strive for the ability to perform on hardware as opposed to simply designing sounds and ARRANGING them in a DAW. I’ve come to accept that gear like Deluge, Maschine, Push3, etc. are more focused on arrangement than performance, i.e. musicianship. If you simply just don’t want to use a computer for finishing tracks, then one of these arrangement devices makes sense. But if you ONLY use that device, the joy of performing on dedicated instruments like a synth is stripped, because at some point you’re really just pressing “Play” and that’s it. There’s a place for all hardware, but as I’m a musician, my primary focus is on hardware instruments that allow me to freely design sounds, perform them in expressive ways, and feel an intimate connection with the device.

  • @ChristopherOrth
    @ChristopherOrth Месяц назад +1

    Rather than looking at this as being “away from a digital audio workstation“, I feel it’s more about creating a specific set of inputs to facilitate a workflow. In other words, it’s just not fun or expressive to use a mouse and keyboard compared to something like an MPE controller, a guitar, wind instrument, or whatever. I mean, realistically a DAW the best looper pedal you would ever get, it’s the interface to use that which is the problem. And if you are still running midi channels through DAW you’ve just signed up for a whole bunch of pain and latency. “DAWless” should maybe be renamed to something like “maximum creative input with minimal friction’. Maybe that includes a DAW, maybe it doesn’t.

    Really nice video. It's a fascinating topic and I enjoyed the analogy of your favorite football team, it's a lot like that and as someone who has tried a lot of extremes on the daw-to-dawless spectrum, the Push 3 Standalone is in a weird spot at the moment.
    I've learned that there's no perfect workflow. While the Push does entirely blur the line between dawless and DAW and removes the need to run a plugin inside of the daw or to export stems, I'm not sure that it ends up saving you much time. The daw-first, hardware-second approach is rather a con in this case because it shows and the workflow is typically faster on the computer.
    It's the opposite on the MPC. There, the hardware was the starting point and as a result, there's a 1:1 mapping between what you can do on the hardware and what you can do in the software. Not so much on the Push where you can't assign macros just to take one example.
    I agree it's a great time to make electronic music!

    What is DaWLLLESS??!? For me, it's the ability to make music without needing the computer. I am on a computer a lot for work. I think analytically in front of the computer. This makes for crap music making time for me if I have to use a DAW. I have had the Push 3 Standalone and it is FANTASTIC! I sold it because i cannot deal with Ableton. I don't think it's a DAWless machine.
    First and foremost, you need to have Ableton installed to setup the device for the first time, install any sound packs, install any M4L devices, or manage any files. New out of box, (if I remember correctly), you can't do anything with the standalone device UNTIL you open a DAW. From there, yes you can be standalone and it's wonderful (if you don't need an arranger or song mode), but I don't think anyone that has the Push 3 would ever recommend the standalone WITHOUT using Ableton. That is what gets me about it.
    I agree we are massively spoiled for choice, and none of this really matters with a wide enough lens. What I call DAWless is not what others care about and honestly I don't care if we all agree or not. I am not a gatekeeper. I just want people to make the music that's inside of them.

    While i know there's a coloquial understanding of the expression DAW, I have always considered a DAW a place where I make a song. Since this is typically the Akai, that's my DAW. But I would say I was DAWless, by the current understanding, since I don't really use any PC software (except for updates, sample transfers, setting up midi controllers, etc.) Maybe it would be more correct to call it DAW independent, since I'm not really "DAWless" but not neceessarily committed to one either.

These days it’s just a meaningless term. Make music how you feel inspired most everything has a compute engine, memory, video screen, and some form of an input device like an MPC. after all, Ableton push three the MPC and several other devices are in fact, digital audio workstations

    Definition are an important thing but I think it’s less so when it come to creating art. I am almost certain that the DAWLESS is an experience that come to make you a better creator, if it is because of the interaction with the instrument or the limitations, the time out from a screen (at least a good screen) or the key switch to creation run time.
    Personally I think it is the feeling of flowing with an piece of gear and forget for a bit about the structure

    My DAWless system is centred on an iPad, using Drambo or Loopy pro, sending midi to hardware synths. For me there's 2 things: sitting at my main desk is a rubbish place to start writing, either I'll be at my synth rack or at the piano. The second is the mouse: it's a really rubbish interface for making music - it's great at giving you fine control over one thing, once you've selected that thing, but it never feels fun for me. I know I write better music when I'm hearing the structure of a piece as opposed to seeing it - laying out a structure visuallly leads me into the same old patterns...

    Dawless is making music with 'hardware' instruments. The term came as a push against the computer/software dominant music making systems that we were increasingly being forced into. Not that long ago hardware sequencers, samplers and even synths were simply out of production or the choices were somewhat lame and limited. Korg had to put out a Monotron to test the waters. Arturia was a software developer. Eurorack was ultra niche and very diy. DSI's biggest offer in analog was the diminutive Tetra.The best sequencers and samplers were 2nd hand from the 90's. Behringer were producing really poor QA guitar pedals. The computer had total dominance.

    I bought the MPC Live 2 two years ago because there wasn't an "Ableton Push Go" on the market yet. Now that there is I'm actually doubting if this is the way to go. Don't get me wrong, the potential of the Push 3 Standalone is huge (think alone of flawless Max4Live integration). But besides the Push 3 Standalone being very much a Gen 1 product with all its flaws, it seriously got me doubting if cramping a DAW into standalone hardware (Ableton) is the superior route vs upping standalone hardware ever more into DAW functionality(Akai MPC) when it comes to going standalone. It reminds me of the discussion between Microsoft Windows (PC) going ever more tablet with the Surface Pro vs Apple's iPad going ever more MacOS (laptop) with iOS for iPad. And I'm inclined to say to say that an OS built from the ground up to serve its hardware (iPad OS, Akai MPC) is the better route. Even if I don't want to be found alive having to use the horrible MPC Beats/Software.

    Ok, first... you hanging out with Liam Killen and Jorb?!? Second, I originally found your channel when I was considering picking up an MPC and you made a video asking if it was even 'DAWless' given how much software was packed inside. I think that might have been BEFORE you could hook up audio interfaces.
    In related news, I saw someone saying they use their MPC X in controller mode, but then ignore or turn off their computer monitor, and just control everything from the MPC as if it was in stand alone. Apparently, if you only use MPC plugins, you get essentially the same experience, but now your MPC has whatever ridiculous hardware specs your computer has. I might give that a try.

    That's what you're selling us and I'm fine with that, but with an Android or IOS tablet you have the same thing you have with the bulky push 3, without the touch controls, of course, but with much more autonomy and versatility.
    Maybe in a few years when they manage to reduce weight and size, and increase power and autonomy, I will consider a push X :)

    for me Dawless is not just about getting away from computer screen and DAW appeoach (i spent 25 years making music on computers and 12 years on iPad) but most importanly about limitations.. Dawless for me is Elektron, Roland MCxxx, Electribes, Polyend stuff, M8 .. Limited things with approach nothing like DAW ..
    MPC, Machine, Push and even Deluge - that’s for me DAW.

    I think Push 3 definitely crossed the boundary of dawless as it quite literally is a DAW in standalone form. That said, I don't care about the literal definition and where its applicable. Its a great standalone device that I can use to assist with creating music. That's really all I'm concerned with.

  • @groovegcs
    @groovegcs 27 дней назад

    After watching this video I realize that what is obvious to me on the subject of "DAW vs DAW-less" might actually not be so obvious to others. The important "stuff" implied with the phrasing "making music using a DAW on a computer/PC/Laptop" is basically never stated explicitly because the complete description of this implication would be impractical in a conversation, due to its complexity. As a consequence I can see how people in the process of educating themselves about the "meta of music production technology" might not be aware of what's truly implied behind that phrasing. What it means explicitly is: To make music with the assistance of a machine that uses a "control archetype" that relies on: 1. A screen, 2. A keyboard, 3. A mouse/trackpad. There is ALSO an implied understanding that all these components are physically distinct and that they occupy a strictly DEDICATED geometrical position in physical space. The relevance of this detail will make more sense with a contrasting example I discuss below. The second half of my explanation is in the comments as I don't trust YT's system.

    • @groovegcs
      @groovegcs 27 дней назад

      The fundamental problem or weakness of this "control archetype" is that for many users it is not conducive to a state of immersion when making music. It inherently puts a clear emphasis on the visual element (because of the size of the screen) and decouples the users hands from their field of view and point of focus as they attempt to follow what's on the screen, in a context where the main focus should instead be on sound. A clear example of a drastically different design approach that contrasts with this "archetype" is the iPad. It qualifies as "DAW-less" even though clearly it can run DAWs. With the iPad, there is no dedicated structure for the mouse or keyboard, the user's hands remain at the center of their field of view as they interact with the machine, and the size of the screen is less than a quarter of the size of a typical 24" computer screen. As a result such a design is inherently much more conducive to a state of immersion. Hopefully after what I explained it's apparent that the "problem" never really was that the software ran on a "computer" or that a DAW software is being used (even though there are other relevant considerations regarding reliability inherent to using a PC/Laptop) . The fact that the "DAW-less" terminology became so commonly used understandably contributed to create a lot of confusion as people chose it to quickly refer to an "enduring" desire to break away from a control "archetype" that is less conducive to a feeling of immersion, which in turn can have a profound impact on the user's ability to reach a state of flow which is necessary to unlock true creativity.

    Musicians just make music.

    An upgrade from the non-standalone to standalone, yes. An upgrade to even today's 'hottest' hardware is not possible, much less 10 years from now. As a simple anlaogy, I have a wonderful, older ASUS laptop. It can't be upgraded further. (It does have two SSD drives in it but that's it. The motherboard cannot be upgraded beyond 'X' with X being quite old hardware.)

Whether that means we use analog synths + reel tape, or huge modular rack, fx pedals, and a digital audio recorder, or Push, or Maschine hooked to our laptop, or an Akai MPC, a Minibrute, and a Fantom, or Electron, or an OP-1 and a pair of headphones, that's up to our preferecences. Push is the least standalone device I've ever encountered and Ableton should be taken to court for misrepresentation, to do anything ableton live like you need to connect it to a computer and it has so many bugs and problems, it should of never been released in it's current state.
    It has serious midi sync and latency problems making it useless with hardware synths.
    Ableton is a software company and their lack of hardware production knowledge really shows with the Push 3, it's like they couldn't figure out how to accomplish the same things in standalone hardware so they just copped out and thought connect it to your laptop.
    While the simpler synths like drift and meld are alright to program it's still not great and there is a lot of back and forth between pages, the ux with the touch screen on the mpc with jura is way better implemented.
    It has so much potential to be great but I've nearly lost all hope that ableton will sort it out in a reasonable time frame.
