    I have both but prefer the Osmo over the Osmo Mobile. It's too much of a hastle for me to balance out the mobile phone everytime. In addition to this, I like to touch the mobile phone for settings, while filming with the Osmo. I also usa a Rode Mic so no issues on the sound. For me it simply is a better set. 4K for FTW! :)

      Daniel Saredi if you use the same phone you only need to balance your device one time I don't see the issue with that.

      Not sure if you have to balance the Osmo Mobile everytime, but that's my guess when you take off the phone after filming and use it for the next time again. What I really don't like is that you cannot always see what your are filming as you often block the screen with your hand or gimbal, depending on the angle. With the Osmo x3 you can shoot down low from the ground and have the smartphone facing up so you can see or when shooting overhead you can face the smartphone down to see what you are filming. That's why I use the Osmo more and not the mobile. I recently also use the x5 from the Inspire 1 Pro more often. Still,... to each his own, I guess. ;)

    Everybody buys 4k because it says 4k on the box :) It's all about the codec. Some record at 100mb, some at 50mb... that's why some 4k cameras cost thousands of dollars and some...are built in in a mobile device. :)

    I certainly appreciate your on-camera style, friendly, no nonsense and straight forward, and very importantly, totally lacking in what some may consider, "humorous" repartee.
    I have just purchased an Osmo Mobile and am looking forward to using it and to viewing any future posts you may make about it, or video production in general.

    The Osmo has a 1/2.3” CMOS sensor, that is a good sized sensor compared to smartphone sensors .... The S7 has a 1/2.5" sensor, still smaller but better than many other smartphones. But the Osmo offers Cine-D flat profiles, which is lovely for color grading. Love the Osmo (I own both Osmos, too), the mobile is nice to have and keep when upgrading your smartphone.

    • @centereddev

      This is the main reason I kinda wanna get the original osmo over the mobile, D-log to match my drone footage easily

    • @ramosmiguel1977
      @ramosmiguel1977 7 лет назад

      Hi, I´m still choosing the one to buy, so any tip is useful. What is the Cine-D flat profiles that you referred to?

    • @centereddev
      @centereddev 7 лет назад +1

      DJI Osmo+ has the D-Log picture profile. This is a very flat profile that enables you to get more dynamic range and is a better template for doing your own color grading as well as matching footage with other cameras with similar flat profiles. Basically if you want that cinematic colored look, its best to shoot flat (in D-Log) and then color the shots in post. This is something you can't really do on a phone to my knowledge.

    I love my Osmo mobile. I purchased it for a recent trip to London & it worked great! I ended up using it for time lapse a lot of the times and it really does a nice job! Two issues I did have was, one it sometimes would not connect correctly to the mobile via the app if I turned the phone off, then back on and Two, I could not get the panorama to work. It appear to work, but when I went to view the picture, it was all black. The phone was a LG G5. I will have to try it with my Galaxy Note 5.

    Fantastic review. Straight to the point, not full of unneeded waffle that so many other reviewers include. We as consumers just want to click your link, watch and make an informed decision.
    Mostly I like that you're obviously coming across as "a matter of fact" and not some DJI fanboy who is not able to be objectionable.
    I came here to watch this as I'm considering a DJI Osmo mobile and wanted to know the differences between both the original and the new mobile.
    Thanks again for taking the time to create an in-depth and quality review. I upvoted and subbed.
    Cheers.

    Great video!!! I'm on the fence with getting the osmo mobile vs karma grip. I'm leaning to the osmo mobile because of this time lapse feature. They sell adapters to mount a GoPro to the osmo mobile or you can diy a mount. 2 questions that will help me decide if this is for me. 1- if the GoPro is on the osmo with the adaptor, can I set up a time lapse using the iPhone near by given that the iPhone would be controlling the time lapse? ( will the osmo know the iPhone is not on the mount and therefore not proceed with the time lapse?) 2- can you connect the osmo to an external battery for extra long time lapses? Sorry, I guess that is a 2.5 question total. Thank you so much.

    Obviously since you uploaded this video DGI go app has been updated to include 4K video. (At least it has for the iPhone as I'm not sure about android). If you are after a video app that allows it to communicate with the buttons on the unit try Filmic Pro. It's a fantastic app that has hardware support for osmo mobile does 4K with up to 100mbs.
    The iPhone plus models have the advantage over the smaller models because there is no need to worry about sliding your phone in to the same spot every time to get the balance right as it needs to be pushed all the way in hard up against the support. Smaller phones need to be counter balanced the opposite direction.

    Filmic Pro on iOS works with the Osmo including face tracking, but throws up 4k at 100 megabits and other fun features. I can't SWEAR there is an android version, but I believe there is. I realize you did this on a Galaxy, but thought I would mention it.

    I agree with you in that I want a pass-thru charger of some type since the OSMO battery can last 3.5+ hours and phone will not. I'd also have an external (backup) battery that I could also charge the OSMO/phone will under heavy use.

    I do agree with you that a phone charging feature would be very nice if it were a built in option. I do like the fact you can keep the internal battery charged with the external battery cable, be easy enough to hook up an anker battery to it and just keep shooting video. 3 or 4 of the right ones you could get 4 to 5 days of video easily. that is as long as you have enough mini ad cards for the phone. maybe another improvement would be for dji to make a mount with a port for a small ssd drive without the noise of the system for the other osmo camera system.

    If you use a 90 degree lightning/usb c/micro USB plug and you can plug into the phone while it's mounted on the Osmo.
    Limit to 1080p was a deal breaker. Hope future firmware update frees up 4k.
    Thanks for the review.

    For an iPhone user it will suck that the iPhone has a set memory capacity. At least on something like a Samsung you can put a big memory card in it. You were talking about it was easier to get a good shot with the Osmo. It has a wider field of view.

    The only gap with the OSMO Mobile is audio recording. there's not a current solution to get quality audio into your phone while it's in the mount. Version 2 should also include a way to do that from the handle so I don't have to do the audio edits in post.

    • @UFDTech

    My guess as to why they obstructed the charge port is so that you can't attach a charge cable or any other accessory so you don't overload the gimbal motors. Possibly wearing them down prematurely as they'd have to work harder with added weight. I saw another video where they tried adding an optic to the phone lens but it wouldn't balance right. Even after adding a counter weight.

    The osmo-x3 is still good for video. It definitely works well and you don't have to use your phone if you know how to point it correctly. The new osmo pocket is also good but the original has better stabilization.

    • @videocreation5206
      @videocreation5206 2 года назад

      Totally agree ,the osmo x3 is still brilliant super smooth device ,the video panning is much better than the mobile. To get the similar results with a mobile you need to use filmic pro stabilisation that can be a bit laggy. Have recently got the iPhone 13 pro at 4k 60fps is great video but does have limitations light blobs by the effects from the sunlight .Gone back to the osmo x3 at 1080p 60fps or 4k at 30fps then convert using resolve studio optical flow convert to 4k 60fps for silky smooth video. The osmo x3 still great gimbal in 2022 ,considering this video was make in 2016 not a lot has changed apart from the decline of cameras and camcorders due to the mobile phone being more convenient for users to take and shoot video out on the go . For myself the mobile does not replace my cameras 😊

    I have to agree on all points but one thing that I like about the original Osmo is that it allows me to capture professional audio with either a shotgun mic or a lapel mic like the Sennheiser G3. I don't see this option working at all with a phone. Maybe using Rode's mini shotgun mic. Another thing I just thought of while writing this is the ability to connect your Osmo to a vehicle or bike. Does the stabilization lack using a phone seems that org. Osmo is a bit sturdier than a phone. Thanks for the comparison 👍

    My original Osmo is broken (water damage) and I'm wondering whether I should buy back the original Osmo or the Mobile.
    One of the things I loved about the original Osmo, is that you're able to film in the most strange positions. For instance, you can keep the Osmo out of the window of your car and low by the ground, or out of the rooftop for instance, while you keep the phone in your other hand. You will always be able to see on the phone what you're filming. That's something you can't do with the Osmo mobile. Keep it up high for instance, and you won't be able to look on your phone anymore.
    Also: with the original Osmo you put the camera on a tripod and control the camera with your phone if you want. That too isn't possible with the mobile.
    So I still am not convinced... :-)

    I got my Osmo mobile on Saturday and it's going back tomorrow! I've had several minor issues with it.
    1. The trigger and up on the joystick kept locking on.
    2. Time lapse failed and sent the gimbal wild after 15 minutes, imagine doing a 2 hour one to find it had failed.
    3. It stopped recording randomly using the DJi app.
    4. Jumping video using the DJi app.
    Could be the app!
    I think there was more faults, but i've given up on it!
    I really wanted this to be great, the time-lapse feature alone was enough for me.

    Great video and helped me in my final decision to purchase one ... Works wonders with the Pixel and I've been using it as a cheeky stabilizer for my GoPro Hero 4 (amazing what you can do with 2 rubber bands) ;)

    if you want to charge your mobile phone , have you considered a 90 degree usb end , that way you wouldnt need to place the phone so far away

    What about hooking up an external microphone? (Perhaps a wireless mic) Without that capability the Osmo Mobile is useless for my applications. Great video though!

    Why do you not use Filmic Pro for filming with the Osmo Mobile? It has an Osmo Mobile support.

    Nice video. I just bought the osmo mobile, and have the original one, but I am still not sure which one I will keep. You might not know, but you don´t have to connect the Osmo to your phone in order to record footage. I know the recording will be blind as with the old GoPro´s but the original osmo is taht way much faster ready to go and more compact than the mobile if the phone is not already attached. Just my 2c.

    • @UFDTech
      @UFDTech  8 лет назад

      The connection between the phone & Osmo may no longer be "necessary" to record, but it's still "necessary" to get the proper shot. If I needed to catch something that quickly, it would make just as much sense for me to capture it with my phone whilst handheld. Obviously, this is case by case, but the Osmo Mobile still has a slight advantage IMO.

    Great review. Needs an update when camera app gets 4k.
    As for charger cable - get cable with compact, L-shaped connector. Case with wireless charger is another option Osmo can coup with, I guess.

      with the S8 launching soon and huawei mate 9 is on its way to the shelf and IP7 plus is struggling to keep up with the competition. It's really difficult for me to decide which should be my new phone and will it fit nicely with my osmo mobile. ^^

  • @Epyeon

    Thanks for the video - I'll consider the osmo mobile then - did you find you needed an extra mic adapter for your phone for better quality? Assuming you've been doing projects that demand high quality

    • @UFDTech
      @UFDTech  8 лет назад +1

      The type of work that I do really can get by with the mic on the S7. However, if you're trying to get high quality audio, as in most cases, it's best to get it externally instead of hooking up a mic to the camera itself.

    one thing you should aware is osmo-m lack of extension arm ability.
    for example , you can put osmo-orignal outside the car and control (watch) it from inside. thx

    great video confirmed what i thought, which is that the camera on my phone is always being upgraded with the newest phone i get and would eventually be better than the x3 or x5 in the future. plus why not utilize the internal phone memory or sd card in the phone instead of having to buy another sd card or 4 as i did with the phantom and mavic. price was a big point too, the x3 is not worth almost $300 (to me) and the x5 raw is too much camera power for what i will be using it for which is documenting drone builds and family excursions etc. nothing major or movie scale about what i will be using it for. anyways, good video and comparisons. well thought out great gob

    Great content. Thanks. Question: do you know if you can run the Oslo Mobile while it is charging? In other words, can you plug the unit into a power source and use it without running the battery down? Seems to me like this would make an awesome stabilized dash cam!

    Personally I prefer the look of the footage from the original osmo it just has a great characteristic to it - Footage from the osmo mobile just has that phone camera look to it (Over sharpening etc). From my experience too, the original Osmo is also great at adjusting white balance too and I have found it very difficult to over expose my shots ever. The original osmo also performs pretty decently in low light too - I accept it isn't great and the S7 does win here but for a camera of its price range with the features it has, the Original Osmo's performance is superior to any smartphone camera on the market at the moment in my opinion :)
