The Pop Song Professor Thanks for all the explanations, I love these videos. I can't wait to see you explain the albums In the class, I'll be there! :)
short version: Tyler craves God salvation to fill his emptiness. Tyler is in a coffin that represents his life without God. God picks the lock of the coffin, showing us that the only way to salvation is through God. The three men in the front seat represent the father, the son, and of the Holy Spirit. They deliver him to the sun, or eternal life in heaven. represented by them saying in heaven all your blood is washed away and all you did will be undone. I go into much more detail below :) this is personally my favorite song by them because I believe it has the most hidden meaning. I have spent almost a year trying to decode it all. If you're interested please please please please keep reading. :) long version: I think the first verse of the song really refers to how Tyler wants to "fall inside your ghost "referring to the Holy Ghost or Holy Spirit. Tyler wants to be embraced by God as a way to help him fill up his emptiness. I think talking about being half of a soul and divided is really about personal conflict and he wants to tell people that they are not alone. (when he talks about dying and flying away I think you saying sometimes we will lose, sometimes we will give in to Temptations, sometimes we will die (metaphorically) and sometimes we will fly away meaning there are ups and downs in life some controllable and some on controllable. then he says either way you are by my side until my dying days. He's very obviously talking to God here. God is by his side until The end. then he says if I'm not there and I'm far away I said don't be afraid. I think he saying that after I die, and I'm far away, do not be afraid we're going home. Often times in the Bible the angels would tell people do not be afraid.(such as when Mary saw the angel in Jesus's tomb) but Tyler is also telling people who might grieve over his death that they should not be afraid because in the end we all go home. In this case home means heven. when he says I want to strip my self of breath, breathless piece of death I have made for you. I think this is really Tyler taking off every mask he has. wanting to strip yourself of breath may be referring to Tylers suicidal tendencies. It could also be referring to in the end the body is just a breathless piece of death to give to God. A mortal writing song will help me carry-on refers to a mortal, Tyler, writing music is what really helps Tyler move on in life. He saying he is simply just a person and he is simply writing music and he simply trying to get by. in the rap, Tyler talks about a hearse. If you don't know these are the cards that deliver dead bodies. She talks about how it ran out of gas so they grab a taxi cab. A beautifully playing taxicab. It talks about how at first there are two men, then there are three. this could represent the father the son and the Holy Spirit. Or something along the lines of the three Wiseman. when they talk about how the stars will fade and then I will turn the gray but they had to steal him from his fate this refers to how without God, or the three people, darkness would consume us. The three men are driving Tyler to redemption. Or as the song says "We're driving towards the sun where all your blood is washed away and all you did Will be undone "blood is a thing of flash therefore when your soul goes to heaven, your blood is washed away. It is no more. And God has repaid your debt, therefore in heaven all you did will be undone. Referring to sin. now as far as the box goes, remember Tyler is in a hearse. The box he is in is actually a coffin. it talks about how he's been scratching at the door of the coffin to be free until finally somebody opens the coffin for him by picking the lock. Then he found the breath he was searching for. The coffin represents death, in this case eternal death. Tyler has been scratching at the door to find salvation but didn't realize he couldnt do it without God. God is the one who picked the lock and opened Tyler's door to salvation. Salvation is the breath Tyler has been searching for. I think the reason the hearse runs out of gas and they end up taking a beautifully plain taxi cab, it's to show you two things. A) being delivered to salvation isn't always in a vehicle that says salvation. Sometimes it is well hidden and plain to people who don't understand it. Much like how the song is plain until you get into the meaning. and B) I believe it is also to show you that being do you livered to death is not something to grieve because we all go home in the end. And if we all go home in the end and it's not such a big deal anymore is it? so when we all go home in the end and it's not such a big deal we don't need a hearse to deliver us. Maybe all we need is a beautifully plain taxi cab. :)
shaky bones. That was awesome dude. I appreciate your efforts that you made explaining this... And I think it's accurate to the point... Thanks a lot!😉
I think when Tyler raps "We're driving towards the morning sun. Where all you're blood is washed away, and all you did will be undone" he is referencing him dying and going to Heaven. That's the way I always integrated it.
I love the fact that with their music specifically, the listeners can come up with their own reasons for the song themselves. I believe that music is one of the things that is up to the person who listens to songs come up with their meanings
I read a theory that the 3rd verse is about Tyler being in the back of an ambulance after a failed suicide attempt. The three heads, the paramedics, represent the holy trinity. The lyrics "we're driving toward the morning sun where all your blood is washed away and all you did will be undone," refers to the hospital that he's going to where they will undo what ever he did to try to end his life.
This brings me back, big thanks twenty one pilots for getting me through hard times, and now my biggest hobby is playing music and writing thanks to them. And a thank you goes to Cliff. I can't listen to this song anymore because of how much of my emotions are tied into this song, but the truth and meaning of this song can only be truly understood by those who have suffered the same pains that Tyler has. You have taken Tyler's work and have shared it to so many people, including me. This song is truly a blessing from God.
Quick correction, I think the lyrics is in the 3rd verse is "We're driving toward the morning, son." I saw it on their site or something a while ago. But wanted to share with you and everyone here because it brings it back to the overt Christian reference.
You're right though. If that's the correct lyric, then it follows the definition even more. I think I was going off how it sounds in the song to me, but I wouldn't be surprised if you were right.
lol When you start looking for colleges to go to, shoot me a message, and I'll tell you where I work. We need more people who would clap for me here. lol jk
I adore this song. The most interesting line in it, in my opinion, is “we’re driving toward the morning sun/morning, son/Mourning Son” I know one is technically the correct words, but I feel like each of those words has a slightly different yet similar meaning. Plus I just think it’s cool.
This song, and many others is why i love tøp so much, every one of their songs have a meaning, that is always really meaningful and can help a lot of people out.
My interpretation of the third verse (this is what I feel the song is about TO ME this in no way says that I think this is what Tyler wrote the song about) "the hearse ran out of gas" "a Beautifully plan taxi cab" I think this means that Tyler didn't want people to know what he did (tried suicide idk why I thought of suicide but I did) so he called the taxi "beautifully plan" because in a hearse everyone who sees the car knows someone has died. "I heard one of them say I know the night will turn to gray I know the stars will start to fade we had to steal him from his fate so he can see another day" "I asked them am I alive or well or am I dreaming dead. One of the turned around and said "we're driving toward the morning, son where all your blood is washed away and all you did will be undone" this to me means that someone close to Tyler is saving them from death or the 3 men are his good thoughts making Tyler fight or fighting for broken Tyler(them driving the car) again this is how I interpret the song NOT what I think Tyler meant by the song.
I can usually find the meanings to twenty one pilots songs myself but I like to watch these videos anyways because I am bad at explaining things so I can show it to my friends so hey can understand (also some I don't understand obviously and so I can learn too)
Also in a car a torch a death the first verse. when he is driving away from someone who has died. He wants to die to be with her and or him "I want the crack the door so i can just fall out" but he forgets her last words were to remember him or her "you buckled up your heart" so this person who passed wants to be Tyler to know that He and or she will be there.
Here's a fun fact for you (almost a year late): The phrase "don't be afraid", repeated several times in the song, is also the most repeated phrase in the Bible.
I think what I also like about this song, is that it can also be interpreted as addressed to a love interest. This interpretation of mine might be influenced by Air Catcher since I early on associated both songs for some reason but I feel like there's an obvious link with A Car, A Torch, A Death. I mean it's the one right before and there's the first verse which goes 'I want to crack the door so I can just fall out / But then I remember when you packed my car / You reached in the back and buckled up your heart / For me to drive away with" so really he's suicidal and using the road metaphor for life but he says someone he cares about has their heart in the backseat (I assumed a "she" since I always thought the you was when he was addressing the girl/woman whose porch the demon sits on). So I guess I always thought it was addressed to her in Taxi Cab and then he was saved by these metaphorical men that pulled him out of the dark suicidal era and helped him get out of his coffin. But I don't know, I didn't look this up close, it's just what I had in mind listening to the song (and I've listened to it *a lot*).
i like taxi cab as a song about god because, its not about what you have to do its about how god will forgive what you have done because everyone has sinned but thats okay if you ask for forgiveness Also i think that even through there are a lot of songs that reference god, you as a listener are still allowed to find an interoperation that helps you. An example id give is holding on to you. Although tyler is talking about god, for me I have my own anchors that I "hold on to" that of course they were not the intent of the song but that dose not change there validity to me
So when he says "a little light revealed the spot where my fingernails had fought," I actually thought that he was referring to how we resist God's amazing Salvation because healing is painful. I know I have definitely hid from having my sin found because I knew the healing process would tear me apart- and it did, but in a good way. Which leads me to believe that the next verse, "then I sat up off the floor and found the breath I was searching for," refers to when we finally allow God to clean up our lives- put some alcohol on our wounds- it hurts, but it brings such freedom and a relief that weakens your knees like coming up from being underwater. Living in sin is a dark and frightening place, but we become so accustomed to the dark, when someone offers us light, we shy away. John 3:19-21 mentions this. But once we allow God to pour His light on us, we will always wonder why we strayed in the first place. God bless to whoever reads this. Have a blessed day!
2:13 also (a minor oversight) twenty one pilots HAD NO FANBASE. like how could you goof that up? Taxi Cab is off of self titled, their FIRST RECORD THEY HA- *inhales, exhales* it’s fine *quietly sings heathens whilst clutching onto vinyl collection while simultaneously mummified in yellow duct tape*
BUT WAIT You didn't explain the most confusing part, "Don't be afraid." Who the heck is talking here? Is it Tyler, talking to the audience, because he says, "And I said, Don't be afraid" Or is it God talking to Tyler? It seems weird for him to address the audience since he didn't throughout the whole song, and it seems weird for him to tell God that. WHAT DOES IT MEAN THOUGH I DONT KNOW

Oreoface squad yes I hope he does Friend, please but my interpretation of the song is about being there for your friend who is dealing with depression and suicide, for instance "Would you let me know your plans tonight, cause I just won't let go till we both see the light, and have nothing else left to say but I will listen to you all day, yes I will" so it's about being there for your friend and convincing them to Stay alive and not to end their life. this song means a lot to me and is my favorite song by Twenty Øne Piløts
I thought it was about Tyler begging the Clique or anyone with depression or who is suicidal to not kill themselves because he loves them and they matter.

Lol Thanks! I'm not sassy person by nature, so it was a stretch.

Thanks!
I am just being dramatic in fact I. am only an addict with a pen who is addicted to the wind as it blows me back and forth...
yes I totally agree!! also pls do clear or be concerned. i have a lot of trouble figuring them out
honestly I like all you videos and give em up thumbs up👍
Sweet. THanks!
WHAT DOES IT MEAN THOUGH I DONT KNOW
I feel as it is God talking to Tyler because God states don't be afraid so many times in the Bible
But it's stated in the first person, "Then /I/ said," which would imply tyler is speaking.
Tyler could be talking to himself in this instance. Or, less likely, he could be talking to friends or listeners.
i have a theory that is probably really dumb. but here it is anyway, i've spent so long thinking about it and bothering random friends and family who don't really care haha about it, and you actually are interested haha :)
but how i see the refrain is like tyler saying:
"sometimes we will die, and sometimes we will fly away; either way You're by my side until my dying days"
like The Pop Song Professor says, basically this is tyler professing his faith, that he believes in God, he believes God loves him and cares about him and will be with him looking after him all through his life.
then i've always seen the next bit as like a reply, it's God who is replying to tyler's profession of faith:
"and if I'm not there, and I'm far away, I said, "don't be afraid." I said, "don't be afraid. we're going home.""
it's like God is comforting and encouraging tyler by saying "you are right; but if it sometimes seems like you're all alone and you can't feel My presence (as nearly everyone, even people who appear to have a strong faith get spiritual dry spells), don't be afraid, we're going home, I'm bringing you home with Me to heaven, to eternal happiness, the embodiment of love and unity"
but that's just how i see it :)
Eslyea Britt it is him talking to his mind that they are going to be cleaned
I have been traveling round the deserts of my mind and I haven't found a drop of ...
...water
😂(^.^)(^~^)
I already cracked this case since the song came out.
do isle of flightless birds boi
I have a literal interpretation of this one.
Mainly the rap part.
I could explain what I think it means in a literal form if anyone wants me to.
Yeessss
Ahhhhhhhhahahahhaaagagag you just made my day by doing this song!!!!!!!!!!!
Glad to hear it!
Can you do friend please, please!
yes.
I've heard theories that Taxi Cab references a possible suicide attempt Tyler might have had
I'm an atheist so I don't have a religion, but I still find it so interesting (the stuff that Tyler talks about)
