Another reference point for tiller use and longevity... My sister and BIL are professional horse trainers. The footing in their indoor arena , which is around 6" of sand on a packed base, has to be critically groomed all the time. Typically, they ran a rototiller over it twice a day, almost every day. They'd have to completely replace ALL the teeth on the tiller every TWO months! They recently changed their arena grooming methodology to using the tiller once a week to completely work up all the sand down to the base and then use a Parma Arena Groomer (a 3PH s-tine spring tooth harrow with a trailing smoothing bar followed by a rolling basket) for daily grooming. The s-tines on the groomer have reversible and replaceable chisel points that all have to be replaced every 4 months (after one turn over of the points). However, it is significantly cheaper and easier to replace the chisel points versus all the tillers teeth.

Great info, this was why I decided to move up to an LX series instead of a BX. Having 5 foot attachments are just more efficient then their 4 foot counterparts. We have huge AG tractors on the farm, but I needed something smaller, nimble and more fuel efficient for my 20 acre plot on the family farm. I only farm 3-5 acres with it, but I prefer using it to till tea and berry rows. My uncles and cousins call it a toy tractor, but I always get the last laugh when the fuel bills come in, lol.

Hey Courtney: I do quite abit if tilling with my B series tractor. Obviously a second pass is probably double the time. How ever I have found that over lapping the tiller by half gives you a second tilling but it is also easier on the tiller because it’s only breaking thru hard stuff with half the tiller. I’ve found this method actually goes quicker then two complete passes.
    Just a suggestion

You only have to go to a farm exhibition to realize the massive sized equipment needed for farming large acreage. It's all about time and money and what equipment gets you there. Re-built re-used farm equipment has its place on the young farms that'll do the job, too. We've come a long way from plow horses.

I tell my clients that are looking to get their own equipment to buy the best tractor they can and skimp on implements a little, especially the once a year ones. The guys looking at starting a business should look at the best quality stuff they can, unless it's something they don't use often. Size wise, I tell everyone to cover their tracks. If they have a 4ft wide tractor, they should look into a 50" tiller to break up the compaction of the tires on the 2nd pass. I hated my 4ft tiller, because it'd leave the outer edge of my tires. But you're right about lasting a lifetime in most cases. My tiller has over 400 commercial hours of hard packed Carolina clay (red concrete) and I'm just now thinking about replacing the tines. My grandpa have one so old, I joke it was was the first one built that he still uses to this day. His bush hog is older than that. Heck it probably cut the Flintstones fields back in the day. Both still running like new.

20 acres you need a rolling disc plow. Two row disk you could break it twice in a day. Tiller breaks the ground deeper and finer but 20 acres on a roto tiller would take forever

Your videos are very helpful when deciding which attachments or accessories to get for our john deere 3046r. I went with a summit hydraulics 3rd loader function. Installed it myself and now I'm just waiting on my everything attachments wicked root grapple to be made. Went with the lightest root grapple I could find on the market so I wouldn't lose loader lifting capacity. The only complaint I could find on it is that in some cases it took 5 to 6 months to be made because the company was so backed up with work. Anyway thank you for you videos. They are awesome. I wouldn't know what to look for when buying attachments or accessories if you didn't put them out. Keep them coming. 👌🏻👌🏻

I think it’s important to point out that gearboxes are critical components and not always available. I bought a Pegasus 52” tiller off marketplace “needed work” - well someone twisted the thing up pretty good and cracked the gearbox which is cast iron - hard to weld. I tried fixing it by brazing and JB Weld - leaked right away. Half a year later JBar who makes the Pegasus found me another gearcase. This is the top one that the PTO goes into. In the meantime I bought a Victory Tractor Implements 78” tiller with side shift - it’s all Chinese. I would’ve loved a RhinoAg medium duty with adjustable speed but $ was the issue there. The Chinese tiller weighs in at 900lbs, it’s built as heavy as a Tartar/CL and priced similar. I hope these things last, tillers aren’t cheap.

You can pack gearboxes (Close to) full of grease if oil leaks are too hard to fix. Works almost as good as oil.

Amen. I spent a good number of years in sales and explaining the benefits of quality, to people that are conditioned to saving money at all costs, can be tricky. The customers that understand where to look for quality are the ones that won’t even entertain purchasing subpar equipment. But… having to cater to all income levels forced us to sometimes sell items which we know are lower quality. It’s tough but getting people the tools they need, with what they can afford, makes me happy. 🙏

    • @kdegraa

@@TsunauticusIV it depends. Sometimes there is a price point on an item that is clearly there because of the brand. Another item which is of similar quality can be purchased at a much lower price. I think it comes down to whether the cheaper item offers value or it does not.

Can you till 20 acres with a 4 foot tiller? Sure! Can you cut 300 acres of corn with a 16 foot head? Of course. It just takes time, and patience. Can you bale hay and hand stack it on a wagon for 7 hours? Certainly. Cuz dad said you had to.............. BUT! iffin yer tilling 20 acres with a 4 foot tiller, take a jug of water. Yer gonna need it. Oh and maybe a tree to hide behind. Ya that'll come in handy too. Maybe eat a light breakfast, you know, so you won't need the tree as much.....
