Great video! I have 3 “LSU Purple” fig trees down here in Louisiana. The trees are each 10 feet tall with a solid 20-foot spread. I’m getting buckets of golf ball sized figs right now. I’m making candied figs, fig preserves, fig bars, and strawberry-fig jelly. Plus, I still have enough to throw to the chickens... this time of year, figs are half of their diet.
I have the same tree but I live in las vegas. How do you get them that size? Mine are size of marbles. There are lots of figs on each branch but small. Should I pluck few off so others can grow bigger?? Any ideas
My favorite garden videos are always when the gardener tastes the harvest on film and we get their honest reaction. Something so satisfying about watching gardeners say mmmmmm. That's what it's all about right there! Can't wait to use these tips next growing season. I have a black jack baby. Thanks for sharing 💚
Thank you so much for offering your tips ! I LOVE figs, and I usually wait until they are really ripe (the bottom starts to crack a little bit) LOL. I had a year with so many figs that we could not eat at one time, I cut the figs in half and dried them in a food dehydrator , and they are the BEST snack ;)
I'm 62 yrs. old and my wife and I just discovered figs this last summer. Found a lone fig tree along an isolated farming area road. Loaded with figs that we monitored throughout the summer. When at their peak.........WOW.....!!! We're hooked. Brought some rooted material and twigs home and stuck them in some soil. So far so good. Looking forward to learning more and Summer, 2020.
We are on year 3 with a brown Turkey fig and have been finally getting some decent size figs but not near the size of your tennis ball size figs! We mulched our entire yard permaculture style beginning of summer and laid off the water from other tips we heard. plus we have been pinching new growth at the top of the branch to push fruiting. It seems to work. Thanks and we will see what happens in three more years!
Dan I have never tried a fig in my life. After seeing your harvest, can’t wait to try one fresh from a garden. Seeing your trees reminds me of growing up in the Caribbean and picking fruits from the trees and tasting the warmth of the sun in the first bite. We shared our harvest with family and friends and it was beautiful to see people come together, share and just enjoy the fruits of the labor. Thank you!
Enjoy your figs. They look wonderful. I rarely can afford o buy them. You've given me the idea of letting fruit vines grow through a tree. We have a useless one in the yard and now I see possibilities for it. I'm also waiting for my feijoa to grow up. Nice vid thank you.
I was drooling when you took a bite of that delicious fig. It's one of my favorite fruits. I remember when I was still in Vienna, whenever I see figs in the grocery store, I buy like 2kgs and eat it in one sitting lol. Now, am here in the Philippines and I have 2 brown turkey fig trees planted on pots and I still have to wait for it to bear fruits. Fig is not yet popularly known here in my country and I haven't seen any fresh fig fruits being sold in any supermarkets. Anyway, thanks for the tips. I really love your garden.
Figs are indigenous to SEAsia, They grow wild in some places. Kids make playthings out of them. They were coached not to eat them. They are considered poisonous, especially the sap.. Thank you in helping educate the public and make use of an important delicious fruit.
Oh, Dave....I could taste and feel those figs when you ate them. Thank you. I live in Missouri and am trying to container grow a fig tree. I use to live in Calif and had a green and a black fig tree. And I agree, they are like natures jelly donut. Wish me luck, Susan
Susan, good luck with your fig trees. You may want to grow a Chicago fig. But I think you are in zone 7 as am I and I have several kinds that are doing well here. My Brown Turkeys are doing very well !
Thank you for the tips, it's good that you don't take too long to get to the point. Most people carry on and I just lose interest. The fig trees and the fruits look great. I have two fig trees and they are two metres high.
It's been 2 years so I don't know if you'll see this but you should look up Notching. It will cause your trees to leaf out lower again so you can more easily reach your fruit. Basically, you go 1/4 inch above a bare branch node, cut out a strip about an 1/8 inch wide and 3/4 inch side to side. Remove the cambium layer. In a matter of weeks, a bud will grow out of the node. -- anyway, look it up so you can get all the details and a demonstration.
I live in Iowa, and have never seen fresh figs at the supermarket...like ever! For years I have missed the taste of it. Back home in Peru, my parents used to have fig trees and they were SO DELICIOUS!!!! I don't even remember them giving the trees a lot of care, or fertilizer or anything like that, but every year we had a boat load of figs. Finally my husband found a website that was selling fig trees, so he bought me four of them. I was SO VERY HAPPY!!!! They claimed the trees were a special kind of hardy trees and would survive the subzero temperatures of the mid west ( I was pretty skeptical ), so we ended up planting two in the ground and the other two in pots. Sadly the figs in the ground did not survive the winter :-( ( even though we covered them with dead leaves before the first frost ). But the ones in the pots ( which I brought in the house in the fall ), seem to be doing very nice, and already I see a bunch of babies...YAY!!! What I needed to know is how often and when I have to fertilize them. Also, thank you so much for the tip about straighten them. I need to put a stake or something for support. Wish me luck :-) Your fig trees are absolutely AWESOME!!!!
Damn! I really envy you!! Nobody grows figs here in tropical Indonesia, and so never tasted a single fig after 40 years of living. I am starting yesterday... a very small sapling. May it adapt to our climate and grow big and bear a lot of fruits. Amen. Seems so delicious! Great video Bro! Two thumbs up! :-)
I never ate figs until my middle-age, because both parents loved them so much they had a Fig Newton obsession...and I hated the taste and texture of those cookies. Yak. Then I was introduced to fresh figs...OMG...not even close to a Fig Newton! So now I'm growing an heirloom organic Violette de Bordeaux fig tree in my living room, hydroponically. Got my first crop of figs last year; it's now going into its 3rd year. I also rooted a couple suckers, one is about 2 ft tall and the other 1 ft; they are healthy and happy in their hydroponic buckets. There is no area outdoors for me to garden, so I am creating a fig orchard in my tiny living room. :-D
You are making me yearn for the day I get to eat from my own take on a food forest. Your work and lessons are amazing and the complete opposite of Codex Alimentarious, which is what the governments of the world want to shove down our throats. Keep up the good works, and may God bless you folks with complete abundance and prosperity in all its forms.
I read the codex-word in your comment and figured it would be some kind of “out there” concept or theory. Looked it up and found that not only is it real, but also very interesting and something I’m glad to have learned today. Cheers, thanks for sharing !
@@plantabundance I plant figs in my garden 2 years back. In winter as they dried out we cut the center stem leaving 2 to 3 Inches from ground. Now it's growing the new stems from ground . Not becoming like 1 tree stem and then branches... what to do can u guide please.?
I had a big come up in my front yard right up against my house about 3 or 4 years ago. Two beautiful tree the sad thing is no one in my house eats figs. This is the first year my has had a lot of food on it so I'm going to try to make preserves
I had a fig tree come up in my front yard o my goodness

I start to grow Figs in my front small garden here in Venezuela 2 years ago, I'm gonna be surprised this year with this strong Rain Season June til November and a high fig production coming
A healthy Fig tree is a productive Fig tree and yours look VERY healthy! We have three in our yard an unknown and two Celeste. Thank you for the growing tips. Looks like I need to heavy prune next Winters end! Have you considered selling cuttings of your Fig trees?
South Alabama here and I have a nice fig tree. Who ever planted it put a FULL bag of oyster shells around it UNDER the ground and never knew it until I started raking the ground around it.......It really produces.....
I had never tasted a fresh fig until I grew one. The grocers here only carry dried ones. Let me tell you guys that the taste of a dried fig is nothing compared to a fresh one. They are awesome! I discovered a year ago that the more aggressive you are in pruning a fig, the better they produce. They seem to like abuse-lol.
Thank you for all the information! I have my fig tree in a container and got some fruit last year but this year I didn't get any. I don't know the reason but will keep your tips in mind. I will need to look up a video for how to prune.
I like them best just before you picked that one. Mmmm they taste slightly like a blossom yet. Not quite so sweet yet. I'm from the plains of So Dakota so you know the first time I had figs fresh off the tree I thought I was in heaven!! I ate till my mouth was sore!
Yes figs taste great. I live in zone 6 and my fig trees [brown turkey] die down to the ground every winter., Then in the Spring they have to start all over. So I don't always get a crop. Maybe I should prune them rather than just let them grow,
If you have room plant a Chicago Hardy fig tree they are a lot more cold hardy. I live in zone 6 and some of the young trees die back in the cold snaps (7- to 10) degrees we have but come right back. I have about 20 types of figs and some are one or two year old trees they were the ones to die back.
Considering growing nature jelly doughnut here in Denver CO zone 6a. Some plants whilt in the afternoon from the high altitude 🌞 SUN. Will have to see if the FIG plant can stand to the radiant 🌞 sun. ✌
It is said that figs are the fruit of Kings, and you have them. Well done, bless you.
My mouth was watering. And yes, a fig is better than a jelly doughnut.
I love it when people share non-rhetorical, practical information. Thank you so much

Never had a fresh fig. Only dried and they are wonderful. Thank God for this blessing.
Never occurred to me to use fig trees as trellises. Great idea, thanks.
Thank you. Cheers!

Figs r delicious. Italians eat figs for dessert after almost all their dinners.
I thought figs were just ok, until I tried one right off the tree, OMG 🤤
Great video! I love figs and now I know I need to trim mine more. Thanks bunches for all the info!
YESSSSS!!! Nature's "jelly doughnut"!!! SOOOOO TRUE!!! 😋👍 Thanks for sharing your tips with us! 😁👍
Thank you dan, that was nice of you to take the time and share some thoughts.I have 2 fig trees and i love them, they are the best.I need to get more.
The figs are especially healthy for men...and the leaves are used herbally as well! Beautiful crop!
Thank you for the tips! You're a great speaker and explain everything well.
I appreciate that!

My two fig trees are only on their second year and this gets me so excited and impatient! Awesome video as always Dan. :)
How are they doing this year?
Figs are the best. Cheers from Ottawa, Canada.

I wish I could see a video of your way of pruning.

Those morning glory flowers are gorgeous! That’s A LOT of figs btw.
Thanks for the information, have 11 fig trees, some 30 ft high, need to learn how to prune them, will watch your videos to learn how.

Thank you for nice video! Good luck!
Good Video ..thanks a lot for that
which part of the country are you growing those fig trees?
I just happened across your video and watch it all, and yeah, I never try a fresh fig before except newton fig. lol
Fig Newton's are good.
But fresh figs right off the tree are to die for.
My dad list all fig trees in MD 3 or 4 ago due to harsh winter.

I need some leaves, they are good for diabetes
Great video Dan - one question, did you plant your fig trees directly into the soil or do you line the hole to restrict their roots? Cheers
My immature Turkey fig fruit are turning slightly yellow . What can be the problem ?
Awesome
Thank you
Thanks!
Last year my 2nd year old fig tree didn't ripen. Soooo upset. I really hope I see them rippen this year
