Sadly I have to admit that I have NEVER used any form of automation! I have never even used Smart batteries because I’m just too used to the older versions of the game where things like temperature were no existent.
Also, for more efficiency, you can put a element sensor on the start of the natural gas pipe and a filter gate after it to trigger the pump *only* when the pipe is full
Better idea is use an element sensor to detect when the generators pipes are filled with natural gas, and then run than into an xor gate after the and gate for the pump and then run the xor gate into the pump and the and gate into the xor gate. This would make the pump stop operaterating while the system is supplied with gas saving a ton of energy. And then later on once you have access to the microchips for the generators you could make this produce 1.2kw just off of three duplicants farting.

The gas tank can store 150 kg and one piece of vent store 1 kg (max) of gas each so that would equal to 150 pieces of vent per gas storage. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
One thing you can use the reservoir (both gas and liquid) as a way to kill off all germs within a gas or liquid, they behave like storage compactors, so if they are surronded by chlorine, their content will be affected by it.
That was way more efficient than I thought it would be. I guess the primary problem would be how to construct your base so that it pools the farts, and other gas, in a single area so that you can make use of it.
I think that if you include the fact that most people will have a water seive, carbon skimmer, and a natural gas generator anyway, it’s a damn efficient system.
Yas, I have a base that has a spread out system similar to this, but I'll be adapting out the "filter pit" element to inject into my current setup to deal with these heavier junk gases! Definitely improved my efficiency
To deal with a natural gas saturation event (fart over-run?) add a sensor higher up on the base testing for constant presence of natural gas (automation only allowing it if it persists more than 30 sec? 1 min?) then OR that with the smart battery input such that the generator runs if the battery is low OR there is a fart over-run. You could also use automation to ensure that the initial (lower) sensors are only allowed to trigger the pump once a minute or once ever 5 minutes- this would allow you to drastically improve efficiency.
You can make this much more efficient! Put an gas pipe element sensor at the end of the natural gas pipe. Then have that go to a filter gate and then a not gate and then an and gate. The gas element sensor should go into the other input of the and gate, and the output of the and gate goes to the large pump. That way, when there is not (not gate) natural gas in the pipe for more than 5 seconds (filter gate) and (and gate) there is natural gas near the pump (element sensor) the pump will run
You can't JUST check for natural gas near the pump, you would also have to check for carbon dioxide. Otherwise a small CO2 buildup would break what you're suggesting
I always use the big air pumps if I can. I then put a gas valve after it, and set it to a low value like 30g/s. This way, the air around the pump will have time to flow back in and the pump will always suck in the maximum amount of air each time it draws power.
I guess the advantage of the gas resevoir would be that it can allow other gas pipes to be placed behind it, if for some reason you needed that much pipe traffic the reservoir would act like a BIG gas bridge.
i subbed, been watching some of these videos for a long time. i dont play these games my self but i love watching other people. i also really love rim world, and i cant wait for you to work your magic on that game.
Even if the gas pipes could hold 10kg (they hold 1) the tank is still a 3rd layer, so you can have pipes in front of tanks in front of the background. When using shutoff filters you should always have an overflow return pipe with priority so that it blocks new gas from being pumped when it's full. Premade filters will shut off if the pipe gets full, but these player made filters will not and will let the gas that was supposed to be filtered continue on. Best case you are just venting it and pumping it in circles. Worst case you get the wrong element in your machines. Also put your element detectors with a pressure detector in such a way that it guarantees the pump is fully submerged in the element you wish to pump out.
Using sensors and memory togle you can create mechanism to start/stop air pump. It dont have to run all the time when the pipe near natural gas generator is full.
Brothgar I think, you can filter gases with even less power draw (0W, after the setup of it), because you can just loop gases via the gas valve (the manual one, which allows to set the thoughput of it) and set it's thoughput low, then use a gas bridge to insert additional gas into the loop, then the output is the left over gas after the gas valve input gas siphoning to repopulate the gas in the loop, however it reqires to be populated with the right gas in the first place, so you almost definetly need a filter for the setup of it, and it can't handle pipe's full thoughput (it will not filter all the gas, if it comes in at close to 1Kg of gas in a single bach). Additionaly you forgot that the GAS pipes only hold 1Kg of gas, where LIQUID pipes can hold up to 10Kg of liquid, so the reservior is way better at storing gas than the pipes (you've got your pipes/piping systems mixed up). Edit: For this system to work, you need to make sure that none of the filters loops get overfilled, since it might then allow the wrong gas into the loop, breaking the filter, but for the system in this video it is not a problem, since you cant have enough dupes to generate enough gas for the generator, so it cloggs up the filter and you can't overfill the room with CO2, so no clogging there.
Brothgar, i believe you're making the gas container more simple than it actually is... I think its actually supposed to make gas storage more effective. Instead of having gas fill a room using a high pressure vent and a pump, now u can add pipes, a container and still have gas in the atmosphere around it. Basically upgrade your gas storage rather than making it consume less electricity. So having a space of 3x5 for the container plus a 2x2 for a gas pump plus 1x2 for a high pressure vent above the pump. The calculation i did off the top of my head gives me 615KGs for a simple 3x7 room using up a total of 5x9 blocks of space.
But in order to make use of them you'll either have to ensure the flatulent duplicants stay in the base and remain above the fart catcher or build a completely vertical base.
hooray for the fart farm! now I know I can build a special isolated bunker for them to generate power. normally I avoid flatulant dupes to avoid gumming up the pipes...
Hey Brothgar, you should do a blueprint for a system to cool down bases. Keeping a base cool seems like the hardest thing to do in the game. I usually build my oxygen generators in the cold biomes, which keeps the base cool at first, but the base always ends up getting hotter later on, even when insulating it with two layers. I have noticed that certain tiles do a great job at insulating but the heat always ends up seeping through doors over time.
I KNEW I could power my house with far... I mean, my base, with duplicants's farts.. hehe This system is also very useful with liquids, but you need to make a return pipe so it can keep looping until the blockage clears, or else all the different liquids go on the nearest open pipe, like happened with the natural gas in this video. Awesome!
Use a gas pipe element sensor at the pipe where the natural gas route begins, connect the automation of said gas pipe element sensor with a filter gate to detect when natural gas has been sitting there for a certain amount of time and have that go through a not gate connected to the pump. This should result in the pump only running if natural gas is not backed up in the pipe. A more complicated system would have a gas pipe element sensor at the start of the natural gas pipe and another one at the exit of the reservoir, have the sensor at the exit of the reservoir go to the set part of a Memory toggle through a not gate and the other sensor go through a filter gate and directly to the reset part of the memory toggle, which in turn its exit goes to the pump. This system should only run whenever the reservoir is empty and keep on running until it fill backs up again, after which it will sleep until the reservoir empties and so on.

Brothgar, my shine bugs always seem to die before I can even build enough food for my own dominants. I challenge you with keeping one of each creature alive once you find them.
What I'd do is stick the big pump in a pit, and make it only run once the pit fills with gas. Though I'm not sure the best way to do that. Maybe make it so the sensors at the top of the pit have to stop detecting breathable air for a certain amount of time before it starts running, then have it run until the sensors at the bottom start detecting breathable air. Though maybe the sensors at the bottom wouldn't actually help.
can you use the signal from the smart battery, and an AND gate so the the gas pump only pumps when the generator is running and the sensor senses the gas. that way it's only pumping while the gas is being used?
I think you should've put extra machinery on the system to get a proper net of power and without cycling the same natural gas twice. If nothing else, slowly add the equipment that would be necessary for a colony to survive in a normal game.
Could you increase efficiency of the large pump by adding a sensor to check for gas in the n.gas line, shutting off the pump in the time the line is backed up? I think you would just need another and gate for the sensor.
Can you check the pressure in a pipe? Because you could maybe do an automation check and rout the natural gas somewhere else when the pipe is full. Or just use more power. :)
Hey brothgar! Is there a way you can send excess gas into a tank so that you can store it for future use and release if the pipe ends up empty? Ie if the fart dupe perished or power requirements rise?
Drop your pump into a well and put the gas sensors inside but at the top of the well, once the well is full, then run the pump; at least your not cycling O2 at that point.
Hey, Brothgar, I have an idea, why don't you try to make a self-sustaining Duplicant apartment, type, thing, having all the things a single dupe needs to survive in as compact of a space as possible, perhaps in space, to show that it's 100% self-sustaining, perhaps using a manual/coal generator for power + a smart battery to power light for bristle blossoms that feed off of the dupe's, uh, urine, that's filtered through a water siv, who's polluted dirt is eaten by a sage hatch, to power the coal generator, to produce more CO2, to be eaten (breathed?) by a molten slickster, to produce petroleum, to be harvested as a byproduct or if the system needs the power, to be used in a petroleum generator, the sand in the water siv is produced by taking extra coal from the sage hatch and combining it with clay from a deoderizer to create ceramic in a kiln to be crushed by a rock granulator. But then comes the problem of MAKING polluted oxygen, you could use morbs, but I think the rate at witch morbs produce polluted O2 is random, and if not, then we have the problem of caring for the morb, with getting the ideal temperature, or you could sacrifice some polluted water and control the amount, yeah, that would work. Why have I explained everything? I don't know. Also, does @Brothgar do anything? The top comment has it in it, so I would assume it does something. Please tell me so I understand, if you see this that is.
is it time for a flatulent challenge? i got an idea watching your video: you can put the pump on a clock sensor. then the gas will have time to collect during the day and you can pump it away more concentrated. add some element sensors as well or test how long it takes to remove everything and you dont have the problem of pumping oxygen.
@1:56 Shouldn't it be 1kg of gas per gas-pipe? :) it's 10 kg of liquid per liquid-pipe To be fair i think the Gas tank is a real help, as you can compress a gas to 10kg per tile, without the need for high pressure vents or other contraptions (and you don't need a pump to get it out again). The Liquid Tank on the other hand with just 5t is really a shame ... it even takes 6 tiles space. Then again you can't compress water anymore right?
If you have the space for the gas tank then it's definitely worthwhile to have to get a nice hefty reservoir where needed, like having a giant battery. Though I do agree with Brothgar that a lot of time you can make due with just some snaked pipes without sacrificing the space. Plus with the snaked pipes you can use them for passive thermal control. I think the liquid tank will still have its uses since you can store and retrieve the water without the use of an additional pump. I have a definite use in mind for this on my petroleum cooling loop to store excess liquid on the output and return lines to prevent backups and brown-outs. Right now I have to use a small reservoir and a pump. There may also be applications for storing liquids that cannot be pumped, like oil you've pre-heated over a volcano... not sure what the melting point of the tank is.
Something that I'm wondering about the gas and liquid reservoirs, can you sterilize the contents by having it in a chlorine atmosphere, if yes it would be going from a barely useful item to an extremely useful item.
The mini gas pump pumps 50g/s as opposed to 500, making it pump 1/10th of the gas, but uses 60W/s compared to 240W/s, which makes it less efficient, using 1.2W of power per gram as opposed to .48W of power per gram, making it significantly less efficient. The only benefits is that it uses less power per second, which is good for a low-draw gas system, and is half the size (although it pumps 1/10th of the amount, making it remarkably less efficient). It also melts at a lower temperature, is higher on the research tree, and costs plastic (a late-game material) to make. In other words, it’s garbage.
To the thing with the sour gas: You have to heat the oil up to produce sour gas and than you have to cool it down very much to get natural gas. Is it still worth the effort?
I guess the question would be just how cold does it need to be to condense to NG? You'd have to take it down under 125C to pump it anyway. If you already have a volcano NG converter, you've already accounted for 500+ down to 125. So how much farther would it need to go? And how is the sulfur released? Can you push warm sour gas through a nullifier sink and get out cold natural gas without bursting pipes? If you are doing all that anyway to harvest natural gas, then you can use it for cooling other stuff off before you burn it, so it's not necessarily a waste. So many questions and interesting tests to do once this goes live!
Yeeah, in my opinion, the reservoirs would need to be like... 15,000kg-150,000kg in order to be useful... plus they'd be... y'know... reservoirs in that regard, 150kg isn't that much in the grand definition of a reservoir. Needs a good balance between filtering and automation filtering.

I've been playing around with this setup (or something close) and I think i've got it pretty efficient. its a uses quite a bit of automation, but the gates don't take power, so it works pretty well. Okay, here goes (if your imagination can't paint this picture, I have included a link to an image): a Gas Sensor (Oxygen) two tiles above the Large Gas Pump, attached to a Not gate, attached to a filter (10 seconds) into an OR gate. Also a Pressure sensor (500g) one tile above the Gas Pump. Both go into the OR which goes to a buffer (10 seconds). When the Gas sensor doesn't detect Oxygen for 10 seconds, and the pressure sensor is over 500g the pump turn on for 10 seconds. I've found this to be very efficient, using very little power, and pumping bigger packets of gas, and very little oxygen. imgur.com/gallery/Y2XZz0b

The whole gas sensing is inneficient . . . You need to create a big pocket of gas to use the big pump. The "well" you created is isn't big enough to hold the pump. Create a 4/8 deep well with the sensors at the top and the pump at the bottom/middle. If in the bottom it will drop carbon first and may not draw nat-gas as quickly. It's the same for my version of the hydrogen/oxygen separation, you make a room big enough to create a large reserve of hydrogen at the top, the pump will most likely never see oxygen and will run at max potential every time.
If the goal is to see the viability of using farts explicitly, then a giant gas well is highly inefficient as you'd need way too many duplicants to keep it at a consistent gas pressure. Your setup is definitely more efficient if you're drawing natural gas from a geyser or fertilizer production, but flatulant duplicants alone don't produce enough to use this kind of seperation method. Especially since you need to capture the gases falling from above, and both CO2 and chlorine are heavier and will fall through your gas pocket, disrupting its consistency and falling into the pumps. Hydrogen has the advantage that it will always be the gas filling the top of a room if it's present, nothing else will rise above or through it allowing it to form the kind of pockets needed for simple seperation methods.
Not really. Chlorine is an exeption because you can't really produce it (who would let bleach stone gasing off ?) so once you are done with it you don't see the problem again. For CO2, it's produced at a pace similar too natural gas (you got 2 farting dups, you will get twice the natural gas, and twice the carbon, you will need to keep that one in check one way or another). But of course my method implies that you only want to draw fart power when you have enough that you will not lose too much power getting it.
It's reasonable to want to bank it up until you want to use it, yes. I'd argue about chlorine though -- I find my colonies often have a little drifting around, but I use it in complicated systems for cooling and emergency decontamination, besides a little balm lily farm. Plus a little always seems to sneak in when you're expanding. Chlorine just happens, depending on your colony, and for my personal purposes I'd want that chlorine being filtered to its rightful places if it's pooling at the bottom. I actually do use a system similar to yours, surrounding a hot natural gas geyser. The collected CO2 at the bottom keeps the gas in a nice harvestable band, and it gives my dupes somewhere to run around at the bottom of the chamber where it doesn't get too hot (because I keep fert makers in there, too, for when the geyser goes dormant). I pump filtered natural gas into the chamber and it sits happily in its little separated cloud. I'm not saying it doesn't work, just saying Brothgar's methods are fair for an experiment of his scale.

Not that it wasn't interesting. But really the numbers. 120W a filler to 10W at shutoff. What is better? You don't need to run 1 spread sheet know 10W is less than 120W as it lets the same amount of gas go through it. 20W for 2 shutoffs to 240W for two fillers. You need a spread sheet to know that 240 is more than 20? Again you don't need a spread sheet to know in what you are testing the small pump is better. 60W to 240W. It doesn't need to move large amounts. So guess what 60W is all you need to move the small amounts of gas. If your moving large amounts 240W would be better if you don't want what you are pumping from to back up. It's not brain surgery. No spread sheet needs to know 60W is less than 240W. Moving small amounts of gas 60W is better than 240W. The only thing bad is the mini pump can over heat because it can only be made of plastic. So with hot gases you will have to waste power so to speak pumping hot gases because the mini would overheat and melt. Again no spread sheet needed to know that. Interesting but a spread sheet to answer which is great 20W or 240w moving the same amount of gasses? Ok.

I think Oxygen Not Included punishes those kind of players more than most. You really have to use everything to guarantee an efficient colony.

If you make a return pipe and use the pipe priority , the pipe Will become full and disable the pump

But pipes store ten kg. So it's only 15 pieces of piping.

The calculation i did off the top of my head gives me 615KGs for a simple 3x7 room using up a total of 5x9 blocks of space.

Hey Brothgar, you should do a blueprint for a system to cool down bases. Keeping a base cool seems like the hardest thing to do in the game. I usually build my oxygen generators in the cold biomes, which keeps the base cool at first, but the base always ends up getting hotter later on, even when insulating it with two layers. I have noticed that certain tiles do a great job at insulating but the heat always ends up seeping through doors over time.
I KNEW I could power my house with far... I mean, my base, with duplicants's farts.. hehe
This system is also very useful with liquids, but you need to make a return pipe so it can keep looping until the blockage clears, or else all the different liquids go on the nearest open pipe, like happened with the natural gas in this video.

Use a gas pipe element sensor at the pipe where the natural gas route begins, connect the automation of said gas pipe element sensor with a filter gate to detect when natural gas has been sitting there for a certain amount of time and have that go through a not gate connected to the pump. This should result in the pump only running if natural gas is not backed up in the pipe.
A more complicated system would have a gas pipe element sensor at the start of the natural gas pipe and another one at the exit of the reservoir, have the sensor at the exit of the reservoir go to the set part of a Memory toggle through a not gate and the other sensor go through a filter gate and directly to the reset part of the memory toggle, which in turn its exit goes to the pump. This system should only run whenever the reservoir is empty and keep on running until it fill backs up again, after which it will sleep until the reservoir empties and so on.

What I'd do is stick the big pump in a pit, and make it only run once the pit fills with gas. Though I'm not sure the best way to do that. Maybe make it so the sensors at the top of the pit have to stop detecting breathable air for a certain amount of time before it starts running, then have it run until the sensors at the bottom start detecting breathable air. Though maybe the sensors at the bottom wouldn't actually help.
As of now (EU), the shut offs don't use any power. They do require it, but they don't use it. Maybe it was fixed in RU.

can you use the signal from the smart battery, and an AND gate so the the gas pump only pumps when the generator is running and the sensor senses the gas. that way it's only pumping while the gas is being used?
I think you should've put extra machinery on the system to get a proper net of power and without cycling the same natural gas twice. If nothing else, slowly add the equipment that would be necessary for a colony to survive in a normal game.
Could you increase efficiency of the large pump by adding a sensor to check for gas in the n.gas line, shutting off the pump in the time the line is backed up? I think you would just need another and gate for the sensor.
You still need brute force or you will have to get smelting.

Can you check the pressure in a pipe? Because you could maybe do an automation check and rout the natural gas somewhere else when the pipe is full. Or just use more power. :)

Drop your pump into a well and put the gas sensors inside but at the top of the well, once the well is full, then run the pump; at least your not cycling O2 at that point.

Hey, Brothgar, I have an idea, why don't you try to make a self-sustaining Duplicant apartment, type, thing, having all the things a single dupe needs to survive in as compact of a space as possible, perhaps in space, to show that it's 100% self-sustaining, perhaps using a manual/coal generator for power + a smart battery to power light for bristle blossoms that feed off of the dupe's, uh, urine, that's filtered through a water siv, who's polluted dirt is eaten by a sage hatch, to power the coal generator, to produce more CO2, to be eaten (breathed?) by a molten slickster, to produce petroleum, to be harvested as a byproduct or if the system needs the power, to be used in a petroleum generator, the sand in the water siv is produced by taking extra coal from the sage hatch and combining it with clay from a deoderizer to create ceramic in a kiln to be crushed by a rock granulator. But then comes the problem of MAKING polluted oxygen, you could use morbs, but I think the rate at witch morbs produce polluted O2 is random, and if not, then we have the problem of caring for the morb, with getting the ideal temperature, or you could sacrifice some polluted water and control the amount, yeah, that would work. Why have I explained everything? I don't know. Also, does @Brothgar do anything? The top comment has it in it, so I would assume it does something. Please tell me so I understand, if you see this that is.

is it time for a flatulent challenge? i got an idea watching your video: you can put the pump on a clock sensor. then the gas will have time to collect during the day and you can pump it away more concentrated. add some element sensors as well or test how long it takes to remove everything and you dont have the problem of pumping oxygen.

To be fair i think the Gas tank is a real help, as you can compress a gas to 10kg per tile, without the need for high pressure vents or other contraptions (and you don't need a pump to get it out again). The Liquid Tank on the other hand with just 5t is really a shame ... it even takes 6 tiles space. Then again you can't compress water anymore right?
If you have the space for the gas tank then it's definitely worthwhile to have to get a nice hefty reservoir where needed, like having a giant battery. Though I do agree with Brothgar that a lot of time you can make due with just some snaked pipes without sacrificing the space. Plus with the snaked pipes you can use them for passive thermal control.
I think the liquid tank will still have its uses since you can store and retrieve the water without the use of an additional pump. I have a definite use in mind for this on my petroleum cooling loop to store excess liquid on the output and return lines to prevent backups and brown-outs. Right now I have to use a small reservoir and a pump. There may also be applications for storing liquids that cannot be pumped, like oil you've pre-heated over a volcano... not sure what the melting point of the tank is.

Something that I'm wondering about the gas and liquid reservoirs, can you sterilize the contents by having it in a chlorine atmosphere, if yes it would be going from a barely useful item to an extremely useful item.
At the moment "Yes" unless they patch it out (hopefully not).
The mini gas pump pumps 50g/s as opposed to 500, making it pump 1/10th of the gas, but uses 60W/s compared to 240W/s, which makes it less efficient, using 1.2W of power per gram as opposed to .48W of power per gram, making it significantly less efficient. The only benefits is that it uses less power per second, which is good for a low-draw gas system, and is half the size (although it pumps 1/10th of the amount, making it remarkably less efficient). It also melts at a lower temperature, is higher on the research tree, and costs plastic (a late-game material) to make.
In other words, it’s garbage.

To the thing with the sour gas: You have to heat the oil up to produce sour gas and than you have to cool it down very much to get natural gas. Is it still worth the effort?
I guess the question would be just how cold does it need to be to condense to NG? You'd have to take it down under 125C to pump it anyway. If you already have a volcano NG converter, you've already accounted for 500+ down to 125. So how much farther would it need to go? And how is the sulfur released? Can you push warm sour gas through a nullifier sink and get out cold natural gas without bursting pipes? If you are doing all that anyway to harvest natural gas, then you can use it for cooling other stuff off before you burn it, so it's not necessarily a waste. So many questions and interesting tests to do once this goes live!

Yeeah, in my opinion, the reservoirs would need to be like... 15,000kg-150,000kg in order to be useful... plus they'd be... y'know... reservoirs in that regard, 150kg isn't that much in the grand definition of a reservoir.

I've been playing around with this setup (or something close) and I think i've got it pretty efficient. its a uses quite a bit of automation, but the gates don't take power, so it works pretty well.
Okay, here goes (if your imagination can't paint this picture, I have included a link to an image):
a Gas Sensor (Oxygen) two tiles above the Large Gas Pump, attached to a Not gate, attached to a filter (10 seconds) into an OR gate. Also a Pressure sensor (500g) one tile above the Gas Pump. Both go into the OR which goes to a buffer (10 seconds).
When the Gas sensor doesn't detect Oxygen for 10 seconds, and the pressure sensor is over 500g the pump turn on for 10 seconds.
I've found this to be very efficient, using very little power, and pumping bigger packets of gas, and very little oxygen.

The whole gas sensing is inneficient . . . You need to create a big pocket of gas to use the big pump. The "well" you created is isn't big enough to hold the pump. Create a 4/8 deep well with the sensors at the top and the pump at the bottom/middle. If in the bottom it will drop carbon first and may not draw nat-gas as quickly. It's the same for my version of the hydrogen/oxygen separation, you make a room big enough to create a large reserve of hydrogen at the top, the pump will most likely never see oxygen and will run at max potential every time.
If the goal is to see the viability of using farts explicitly, then a giant gas well is highly inefficient as you'd need way too many duplicants to keep it at a consistent gas pressure. Your setup is definitely more efficient if you're drawing natural gas from a geyser or fertilizer production, but flatulant duplicants alone don't produce enough to use this kind of seperation method. Especially since you need to capture the gases falling from above, and both CO2 and chlorine are heavier and will fall through your gas pocket, disrupting its consistency and falling into the pumps. Hydrogen has the advantage that it will always be the gas filling the top of a room if it's present, nothing else will rise above or through it allowing it to form the kind of pockets needed for simple seperation methods.
Not really. Chlorine is an exeption because you can't really produce it (who would let bleach stone gasing off ?) so once you are done with it you don't see the problem again. For CO2, it's produced at a pace similar too natural gas (you got 2 farting dups, you will get twice the natural gas, and twice the carbon, you will need to keep that one in check one way or another). But of course my method implies that you only want to draw fart power when you have enough that you will not lose too much power getting it.
It's reasonable to want to bank it up until you want to use it, yes. I'd argue about chlorine though -- I find my colonies often have a little drifting around, but I use it in complicated systems for cooling and emergency decontamination, besides a little balm lily farm. Plus a little always seems to sneak in when you're expanding. Chlorine just happens, depending on your colony, and for my personal purposes I'd want that chlorine being filtered to its rightful places if it's pooling at the bottom.
I actually do use a system similar to yours, surrounding a hot natural gas geyser. The collected CO2 at the bottom keeps the gas in a nice harvestable band, and it gives my dupes somewhere to run around at the bottom of the chamber where it doesn't get too hot (because I keep fert makers in there, too, for when the geyser goes dormant). I pump filtered natural gas into the chamber and it sits happily in its little separated cloud.
I'm not saying it doesn't work, just saying Brothgar's methods are fair for an experiment of his scale.

Just use a pipe sensor to not run the pump while the fart pipe is backed up!

Not that it wasn't interesting. But really the numbers. 120W a filler to 10W at shutoff. What is better? You don't need to run 1 spread sheet know 10W is less than 120W as it lets the same amount of gas go through it. 20W for 2 shutoffs to 240W for two fillers. You need a spread sheet to know that 240 is more than 20? Again you don't need a spread sheet to know in what you are testing the small pump is better. 60W to 240W. It doesn't need to move large amounts. So guess what 60W is all you need to move the small amounts of gas. If your moving large amounts 240W would be better if you don't want what you are pumping from to back up. It's not brain surgery. No spread sheet needs to know 60W is less than 240W. Moving small amounts of gas 60W is better than 240W. The only thing bad is the mini pump can over heat because it can only be made of plastic. So with hot gases you will have to waste power so to speak pumping hot gases because the mini would overheat and melt. Again no spread sheet needed to know that. Interesting but a spread sheet to answer which is great 20W or 240w moving the same amount of gasses? Ok.
