I looked at the Ford F150 (which I truly love) and the Tacoma but for what I would use it for and the size, driving comfort and economy I went with the 2020 Honda Ridgeline RTL-E and I haven't looked back.

Love to fish and spend alot of time driving on washboard roads. Independent suspension and it's low unsprung weight smooths it right out keeping the beer in the trunk cooler from getting shook.

As someone who gets mulch and compost often from a Bobcat bucket (1.5 cubic yard), I highly recommend laying down a tarp inside the bed as a liner just before loading any loose fill material.
This prevents loosing any payload through that large gap at the tailgate. Also, more importantly, it prevents the in-bed trunk from becoming stuck in a closed position. If pea-gravel or mulch wedge within the channel between the front deck of the bed and the in-bed trunk’s lid, you’ll find yourself using a straight-slot screwdriver to dig out that channel.
The Ridgeline’s bed remains perfectly functional, it’s just a different concept. Knowing that just means being prepared to deal with scenarios outside the norm for other pickup trucks.
A full-size spare possibly on an opposite side swing bracket (similar to Element) would be nice. The undersized spare isn’t accessible while payload is in the bed.
Ridgeline’s close proximity to the ground helps it achieve a low center of gravity with very competitive payload weights. I think 8.5” would be a much better break over clearance given the longer wheelbase than the Pilot or Passport.
The European in-bed crash plating is great information. Many don’t realize much of the Ridgeline’s cost is associated to it’s overwhelming crash testing dominance that typically outperforms most full-size pickup trucks.

Looks like a good little rig for what it’s intended for. It doesn’t fit my needs but its obviously is great for a lot of people. Not everyone needs a 3/4 ton diesel to go to Walmart or Home Depot. . I’d be more proud of this than a company like ford building an electric SUV/crossover and calling it a mustang. 😂

I just purchased a 2022 Ridgeline this year… And I enjoy watching videos about these trucks… And it seems like every time I watch a video I learn something new… I’m especially happy to hear about the Y frame and the safety plate between the bed and the cab. Whenever my girlfriend drives a truck she says she forgets she’s driving a truck and thinks she’s driving a car… The ride is smooth and the handling is great… I hate winter but I’m kind of looking forward to it this year… This is the first all-wheel-drive vehicle I’ve ever owned… We don’t get a bunch of snow in Missouri… But enough to where having four-wheel-drive is handy… Thank you for this video… Very informative. One more thing… The redesigned front end looks more like a truck than the previous years of the second generation… Especially from the side… It looks as nice as a Chevy Colorado or a Ford Ranger

This is an impressive review...mostly because it doesn't waste time with the obvious but focuses on 5 features that typically aren't discussed in any of the Ridgeline reviews - I was particularly impressed with your catch and remarks on the unibody/frame integration, the independent rear suspension (and payload) and steel panel behind the cab. I was also surprised to see how open you were to the concept of the Ridgeline and chatted it up notwithstanding its 'outlier' status. Many thanks!

Good to see Honda listening to feedback from their customers and addressing some of the issues such as the narrow opening in the rear doors. That's such an easy fix too. All you have to do is replace the door checkers with longer ones. I did it on mine and it took 15 minutes. Having the tailgate handle lock integrated with the power door locks is an improvement too. Again, something I had to fix myself by installing a handle with the lock cylinder. Now, fix that infotainment and gives us volume knobs Honda!!!!

The Ridgeline is very well appointed having options that are missing from similary priced competitors. Thanks for the review you provided info that I didn't consider until you showed it. I would not doubt that Honda is working on a more off road oriented Truck and the completion better be ready or they will lose a good percentage of the midsize truck market.

I just bought the 2022 Black Edition. I didn't know about the frame, thanks. The other thing I had a problem with was the front wheel drive base. But I got over that as I'm not pulling the "Queen Mary" across the Rockies and it gives you more room in the cabin. My neighbor was surprised I bought Honda as we've been Chevy kinda guys. So, I can't say I'll take the Honda out for a drive, I have to say I'll take the truck. 😉 But so far it's a great truck. It takes a while to learn all the gadgets which are fun. Nice video

I use to think this “truck” was a joke until I bought one myself. The 2021 redesign is pretty nice and the driving experience even better are you going to be doing some rough terrain off-roading in this no , but even in my half ton I never did that. Realistically most people are never going to tow more than 5000 pounds or put more in the back of their truck than what this can handle. It’s not for everybody but if you’re looking for a little truck that gets excellent gas mileage (over 20 mpg) and you can haul gravel, sod, mulch etc this is an excellent buy. I will say Honda probably would sell more of these if they weren’t so expensive top level trims are pushing 50K. Honda doesn’t do much bargaining off the MSRP like Chevy and Ford will of course you’ll get more life out of this and much better resale than either of those.

As for the brick in the bed crash test. I would think the Ranger would pass this as well since it was basically brought over from Australia and Europe with just minor changes to the bumpers.
One last thing. I'd love to see the measurement of the bed depth on the inside. While most of the beds are way too deep nowdays due to high bed sides, I have a feeling that the Ridgeline's in even shallower than the beds of "midsized" trucks of the 90's due to the trunk in the Ridgeline.

Honda made a lot of mistakes with the gen 2 ridgeline. The back seat is identical to the one they have used since gen 1 debuted in 2006. The volume button is another huge miss. I think the biggest mistake by far is that it doesn't look tough. The front end is no different than the Pilot. At least the gen 1 differed in front end style a little bit from the pilot. Big fan of the trunk though. I could never see it working on another truck though because of the cross members of a traditional frame. You know what would make the Ridgeline even better? If the engineers at Honda could somehow figure out a way for there to be a “Midgate” feature, like with the old Chevrolet Avalanches. It really would make the vehicle even more versatile. I think every midsize truck should have this feature, and it would help with the lack of bed space.

The payload in my single cab 2016 f150 is like 1800 lbs. Since my f150 is a single cab the payload is actually more than most crew cab half ton trucks. They are normally around 1500lbs. Having said that even with my truck it isn't ideal to haul gravel. I can get a 1/2 yard of rock which is nothing. For about $300 I can get a double axle dump truck to drop off 12 yards. I would have to go to the rock yard 24 times to get the same 12 yards. So actually no 1/2 ton truck is a good gravel or dirt hauler. Especially when they usually have low payload and small 5 and 1/2 foot beds due to the crew cab.

@@squidusn71 It's actually an Odyssey, it's built right along side them I watch "White Bodies" go into the paint booths every day at HMA. The only way you can tell a Ridgeline apart from an Odyssey is that the RL has a bed. Having said that, I never considered one until I saw them in this manner. For everyone who says, "if it's not body on frame it isn't a truck," the construction of it is extremely rigid, instead of a couple of frame rails providing rigidity, the entire vehicle provides rigidity, and it STILL has "frame rails" (look under one, you will see).

    • @squidusn71
      @squidusn71 3 года назад

@@jerrynsharla You have to dig deeper on how it is constructed. It isn't really a "chopped up Odyssey". First of all the wheelbase aren't the same as the Odyssey.
The front half of the frame is the same as the Pilot. Then they added additional structural frames in the middle. The rear frame is exclusive to the Ridgeline which means, it does not share that part of the entire frame from either the Pilot or Odyssey.
From the B pillar on forward top and bottom, including suspension, the Ridgeline share just about everything from the Pilot except for the grill, front bumper, fog lights, and turn signal lights. That means you can buy a Pilot hood, windshield, fenders, and front doors. Install them on the Ridgeline and they will fit. Depending on the model year, the differences between the Pilot and Ridgeline as far as interior is the steering wheel and gauge cluster.

Saw one pulling a really nice bass boat today with a huge Yamaha 250 vmax hanging off the back. It looked like it had no trouble doing that. I'm sure that guy wasn't worried about it. But, I mean, why didn't he just spend more money for a "self respecting man's" truck, and less money on the bass boat? Maybe his priorities were different than a "self respecting man's." Let me ask you, if it was say a 3/4 ton diesel pulling a little john boat, would you say, "that's not a real boat, no self respecting man should be seen in one of those?" No, the john boat is still a boat by definition, even when compared to the likes of the 21 footer with the 250 Vmax. Just like the Ridgeline is still a truck by what defines a truck. A 3/4 ton truck would be overkill for pulling a john boat, if that was all you did with it, it's also obviously overkill for a 21 foot with a big 250 Vmax, if a Ridgeline is all you need to pull a boat like that.
