  • That 70s Show sequel series , Netflix 's That 90s Show has done right by it's predecessor.
The series which centers around former leads Donna and Eric 's daughter Leia and Jackie and Kelso 's son Jay --- as well as a whole cast of new characters. ( Nate , Nikki , Gwen , and Ozzie )
This spin off provides plenty of callbacks and nostalgia bait --- but also offers up it's own original take on something not so original.

At least this show had a direct connection with the original show, unlike "That 80's Show", which had unrelated characters, with the main protagonist supposedly being Eric's cousin, which you'd never realise.

@@daved1535Agree with both of you. It really felt like Gen Z kids playing dress up instead of an authentic portrayal
I'm not saying it had to be as raw as Mid90s but just the way they interacted with each other was off. The set design and props were good but that's the easy stuff.
Although Red and Kitty not having a finished basement in the Midwest in the 1990s. Just no. That basement would've 100% been finished.

Agreed, there was no indication that either Leia or Nate liked each other as more than friends. It seemed a little forced, though hopefully they'll resolve it quickly next season. Also, it might be interesting if Leia or Gwen developed feelings for each other in the future, as I feel like they could have some potential.

The first few episodes felt like a Disney or Nickelodeon sitcom, with drugs and sex references thrown in. Some of the kids felt like they were reading their lines, and it had a "school play" feel about it. Thankfully, they gradually settled into their roles, and had great chemistry, so fingers crossed that Season 2 will be even better!

I think we knew most of the characters of That 70's Show better by episode 3 or 4 than we do the characters in this show by the end of episode 10. But it's an unfair comparison; much of the secret of why this is a franchise is that the original show sprang forth almost fully formed in a way very few sitcoms do, and the actors had mostly mastered their characters from the very first scene. That is not an easily accomplished thing, and one can't expect it to be pulled off twice.
I think this show also suffers a bit from applying a traditional pacing of character development from the 26 episode season era to the 10 episode streaming season era.

I loved this first season for exactly the reasons you listed. I thought it was incredibly well cast, the call backs to both the era and the original series felt genuine and not like overt fan service. I feel Nate being willing to cheat on his girlfriend makes a bit of sense. I'm not saying it's ok, but he knew she was unhappy, he knew (even if he didn't explicitly know) she was going to leave him and so he latched on to the first person that offered him a sympathetic shoulder. Like I said, I'm not making justifications for cheating on ones significant other, only that it's a very real thing that happens in real life.

i think the biggest problem is that while the original show had 25 episodes throughout its first season to flesh out the characters, this show got 10, and therefore i feel the writers just had a lot less to work with in terms of fleshing out the characters.
i think they did a good job with what they were given, but i would’ve liked to see even just a few more episodes to develop the characters and their storylines. hopefully that’ll be fixed with season 2

So as someone who was a kid in the 90s this show def feels early 90s over late and a story line they could give OZ would be being his more flamboyant-ish self tryna be different at school. As in the 90s u kinda had to move like that. The F and R slurs were every day vocab so they could bleep them but do an episode on that. Renting movies was a huge thing an apisode could be done on trying to rent a movie that’s always out and finding who keeps taking it or losing a rented movie in Red or Kittys name and the fee runs crazy there’s a lot of 90s things that could go down but OZ does kinda give GEN Z SLAY TODAY in a way which can make him feel like an outsider so they just need to tune him a bit more 90s

This season started on the 4th of July weekend 1995, with Leia's 15th birthday being a few weeks later; meaning Leia was born in late July 1980. Being that the original show ended with the clock striking midnight, reigning in January 1st, 1980, even IF Donna conceived her an hour or two later, Leia should have been born in late September or early October. So either Leia was born 2 months premature...or she's not Eric's.....and i think they should run with that!!!
Hear me out; imagine a 3-episode arc that revolves around Leia learning that Eric isn't her real father:
Part 1- Eric and Donna are visiting for the week, and through overhearing a conversation in the other room, Leia learns that Eric isn't her real father. The rest of the episode consists of her having an identity crisis, questioning who she really is, whether her mom cheated or not, and of course, who her real father is and why he isn't around. The episode ends with Leia confronting Donna and Eric.
Part 2- Donna and Eric admit that it's true, Eric isn't her actual father. However, neither of them are willing to tell Leia about her real father, with their reason being 'to protect her', causing Leia to become angry and start calling Eric by his name instead of 'Dad'. Throughout the episode, she avoids them as much as possible, calls them names, and refuses to listen to them. Red recognizes the anger and pain that this secret is causing her, and the episode ends with Red sitting Leia down and saying, "Let's talk, Kiddo", implying he's going to tell her who her real father is.
Part 3- It's the following morning; Red, Kitty, Eric, and Donna are eating breakfast, talking about what they're going to do about Leia. Donna leaves the kitchen to go wake up Leia but comes back and declares that Leia's gone. Kitty, Eric, and Donna start freaking out, searching the house, and throwing out ideas of her running away, being kidnapped, or worse. Finally, Red cuts in and says that he knows where she is.
Cut to a trashy neighborhood or trailer park, Leia approaches a house/trailer, there's lots of noise and yelling inside. She knocks...and Randy Pearson opens the door. The episode then consists of Leia trying to get to know Randy, who is a fat, balding, out-of-work drunk. His current wife is loud and nagging, and they clearly don't love each other. He has multiple kids from multiple different women and doesn't care for any of them, including Leia. Sadly, she realizes that THIS is the truth that her parents wanted to protect her from. She leaves and sits down on the curb to cry. Eric shows up, alone, and quietly sits on the curb and puts his arms around her to comfort her. She asks him if he knew about Randy. He admits he did, acknowledging that when her mother told him that she was pregnant, he realized that he hadn't been home from Africa for long enough to be her father; but that it didn't matter because he loved her mother. She then asks how he can still care for her, even after all the hurtful things she's said since finding out the truth, and he tells her,
E: "Because; whether my blood or not, you ARE my daughter, and I wouldn't change that for anything in the galaxy...this one or the one far, far away."
L: "Dad!" (finally calling him 'Dad' again)
    E: "Sorry"
both chuckle and then hug even tighter...

90’s show just didn’t risk anything. They didn’t duplicate its parent show but just combined characters. You don’t have Kelso but you do have a kelso and Hyde hybrid alongside nods galore and a new foreign kid for some extra assurances. No change that would challenge the audience or force them to see the show in a different light just a hand holding sequence of episodes to reassure you nothing here will disappoint you. I have higher hopes for the second season but I think the 1st season won’t do much for new viewers and that’s just an unfortunate loss. I give it a 2 and a half out of 5. Here’s hoping for better. 👍

    Nothing will ever top original....
    BUT...
This show was damn good and sooooo much better than nostalgic purists wanna admit. I thought it was better than the last 2 seasons of the OG. And I genuinely liked it way more than I thought I would, and I'm extremely excited for a 2nd and potentially maybe even a 3rd or 4th season. All of the kid/teen actors held their own very well considering how little experience they had prior and how beloved the original show was. It could have easily been so bad but I was pleasantly surprised.
This show compared to the original might be the sitcom equivalent of Alien and Aliens. The first one was better and more iconic, but the sequel is a fucking blast and has its amazing moments.
I too enjoyed how 95% of the fan service wasn't just fan service for the sake of fan service. I love the cameos of the original cast but I also reaaaallly like that the creators/writers had enough confidence in themselves, the writing, and the new cast to not solely rely on the original actors and characters when they would've been the safest bet logistically speaking.
Excellent analysis, I'm glad I'm not alone in liking this show, alot of the feedback I read on social media when it first dropped was negative which worried me because above all else I just love this fictional world/universe and I hope to see more of it.

Nate looks just like Michael Kelso IMO. I theorize he'll end up being his father.

No, it did not live up to the original one. The only feat was the original cast members here and there, the rest was an absolute shite

My wife and I enjoyed this show and while it was good i didn't really like the new cast i find them annoying and not funny and I feel everyone new has no chemistry together unlike the original cast who had great chemistry together right from the start

@@JakeQ2-zb2fz actually no I’m not. I’m 33yo and grew up watching that 90s show and they failed horribly to capture the the same nostalgia. And definitely didn’t represent the 90s well at all. And the fact they needed to try and force many of the old casts tropes (with little to no success). The only thing that makes it relatable at all is the presence of the old cast and they didn’t even execute that well. They basically had the pop up for you just to say “hey there’s Kelso” then they’re irrelevant. Sorry but the storyline for the kids is weak af. The only thing this show has going for it is Red and Kitty. If you liked it you’re obviously a casual..

Loved "that 90s show" me and my wife watched this in one night. All of the characters feel real and original so that is nice and i really like the neighbor and Oz in the future episodes. Also if it wasnt for the writers and actors strike they would be filming season 2
