What is up with custom cards overclocking worse then FE?
One word; Nvidia.
1080 chip has terrible voltage scaling so yeah overclocking wise all aftermarket PCBs are useless even with a modified BIOS.
They dont overclock worst, they are all at the same level, it has been all about silicon lottery so far. Max overclock has been around 2050mhz to 2130 mhz in all cards regardless of the vendor including founders. Although I suspect it might be GPU Boost 3.0 since it will lock the max voltage you can apply regardless on how much you push it.
+ralmslb The good thing is, keeping the voltage down will extend the life of the card.
Jeff RT I wont't say otherwise, but regardless, the option should be on the user if he wants to slowly kill their card for performance or not. Like it happens with processors, no one will stop you from applying 2v in your CPU and kill it. So why so much control from Nvidia...

it actually should only be $680. The cards on amazon are just selling for a lot more because they have limited supply. The price is still marked up a bit for the fe 1080 lol... $809... Go to newegg or something for much better prices :P

at 4:43 it does a lower min then all of them at hd lol
the lowest frame is meaningless though. Lowest 1% is better because it averages over the lowest 1% of the whole run, not just 1-2 second space that hit the lowest because windows started doing something in the background.
I think you need to re-read my comment. The lowest framerate stat is normally an incidental number that has high variance. Taking the average of the lowest 1% of all framerates is useful, just looking at the lowest framerate as calc'd over a small amount of time is not.

You could just buy two rx 480s cheaper and a bit more powerful than a gtx 1080. Nvidia is so overpriced same goes with intel CPUs.- what I have been seeing for the pass couple of weeks. Has been kind of annoying. It's just no matter what you say I still just want to buy a gtx 1080 or 1070 ok.
Yet you have to crossfire to get around the same performance, which a lot of games don't support.....
The RX 480 does not perform as well as the GTX 980. Perhaps this was said prior to testing but the 480 in some cases didn't do as well as the 970 and in others it just barely did better. In none of the benchmarks was it on par with the 980.
There is no reason for AA at 4K
but when you can why not

It depends on the size of the monitor.
That's a general theory, but in practice, many people like AA, regardless of the resolution. I wouldn't be surprised if comments from 5 years ago said we don't need AA at 1080p.
With that said, I personally, use or don't use AA based on the game. Some games look better without it, to my eye, while others positively need it, or I don't like playing them. Luckily, as PC gamers, we have options to set the games up to our wants and needs.
Actually 2X MSAA does clean up some jagged edges in 4K. Though there is no reason for 8X or 16X MSAA at 4K.

Picked one up from Newegg last night. They were in stock for about eleven minutes. Guess I hit refresh at the right time. If anyone is in the market for one and doesn't want to line some scalpers pocket I recommend nowinstock. They keep a running inventory of a ton of retailers.

its interesting to look at the difference between the base and boost clocks between the different aftermarket maxwell cards compared to pascal. Its clear they are pushing the factory clocks much higher than they "usually" do to try to show a bigger increase in frequency over maxwell.

I just bought this card and I love it. It was worth it now that it's down in the 600 range.
I hated ACX 3.0 at first, but it's really growing on me. The ftw looks especially nice with the gunmetal accents
The performance gains from a usual pretty highend aftermarket model (the EVGA FTW edition) are so minimal compared to the Founders Edition, even when overclocked. You can also overclock a reference model, although that might thermal throttle. But the fact is that all GTX1080's have already been heavily pushed from the get go, compared to cards like the GTX970 or GTX980Ti which could be overclocked a lot from stock.
A GTX980Ti has a standard boost clock of 1075Mhz, but getting 1500-1600 Mhz is pretty easily doable, so you gain about 50 to 60% (water or LN2 cooled can even get 2Ghz+). The GTX1080 has a default boost of 1733Mhz, getting about 1950Mhz is only a 12.5% increase.
So yea.. the GTX1080 is the performance king, but NVidia did it by already squeezing the living hell out of it. I think if you'd clock the GTX 1080 back to average GTX980Ti speeds, somewhere around 1300-1400Mhz, the GTX1080 would be hardly any faster (if at all).
well, with a custom bios you surely could go further, but i wouldnt reccomend it since you can brick your card with it.
ThePrussianGamer Yes, maybe.. but still. If you take a look at the score on HWBot, in most benchmarks the GTX1080 doesn't even get anywhere close.
On Unigine Heaven Xtreme, one of the few benchmarks where there are records of both cards on custom LN2 bios/cooling, a 2420Mhz GTX 1080 only barely beats a 2150Mhz GTX980Ti (8610 vs 8511 points). A 2115Mhz clocked GTX1080 (about the same clockspeed as that GTX980Ti), scores a lot slower (7619). Clock for clock, a GTX980Ti is still faster.. which is not that surprising as it has a lot more CUDA cores. But still I am a bit disappointed that the architectural performance gain is so little. NVidia only got a decent performance gain from hugely increasing the clockspeeds.

lol, my evga gtx 1080 SC arrived yesterday and i did not encounter the plastic wrap problem. The plastic peeled right off and wasn't under the screws.
This is the card of my dreams. Now if I could just find it in stock at MSRP, I would be a happy camper. Alas, a couple of weeks and supply should meet demand.

I was hyping up because I thought I will get mine on Saturday the 18th, with the due date for the FTW batch arrival on the 17th (UK). Then I received an e-mail saying it got delayed and won't be available until the 27th lol Happy days.
Where did you order yours from if you don't mind me asking? I'm looking at buying one from Amazon but it's annoying not having a delivery date.

OCUK is about 20-30 quid cheaper though, last time I checked.

I just ordered my gtx 1080 FTW from amazon this morning :) £599 so not too bad and compared to the price of the gtx 1070 FTW (which I was originally going to go for) its only £150 more than the 1070 FTW on OCUK so think it will be well worth the extra over the 1070 :) . Hopefully the wait for these cards to arrive isnt too much longer!

Price of this card has been known for weeks, official retail is just $679. Which is a full $40 cheaper than the official retail of the MSI GTX 1080 X8G at $719. Not only is the FTW less expensive, but meets or beats the X8G in every possible spec and metric. Higher factory boost clock on the FTW, a boost clock that does not require you to specifically use EVGA's tuning program to unlock. Compared to MSI with a lower factory OC that requires you to use MSI's app to even access.
I made the mistake of upgrading my 960 back in January to a 980. As soon as I heard about the 1080 being the same price that I paid for the 980 I was upset. I knew new cards were coming but I didn't expect them to be in the 500 dollar range.
This videos making me pumped for the 1070 FTW...
This card was a nightmare for me. It's shipped with a factory defect that basically caused a black screen and fans to spin up to 100% when playing any game. I had to return it and get my money back. Now they're not available at Newegg or Amazon and EVGA is prepping new shipments of these that don't have the hardware error. I chose an MSI gaming 8G 1080 card instead and couldn't be happier :-)

I really wish that EVGA didn't change the shroud design. The ACX 1.0 and 2.0 cooler looked so slick; I think the 3.0 looks gaudy.

Hey, how hardcore of cooling would I need for this card? Are the Dual fans enough to keep it cool, as well as some case fans? Or are water blocks a necessity?

Hey Kyle! I'm ordering the EVGA 1080ti FTW3 when it's released. But I'm curious, should I use their single split cord, with the 8-pin connection and the 6+2 connection? Or use two separate 8-pin cords? I've heard that using 2 separate cords is better for power than the split cords...
TheMicahPeterson If you can use two cables do that. Its cleaner in terms of looks, and is safer than using split cords. Both work though.

My GTX 1080 MSI GAMING X overclocks to 2.1 ghz, with the memory +500 mhz, stable. My custom fan profile keeps the temp at 61c under load. I think it is the best option to date.
I've got my 1440p 144hz monitor just waiting on the stock of the 1080 FTW to come in and I'll finally get to offload this 970. It's just not cutting it in QHD right now.

So the 980ti in the benchmark statistics - are they OC'ed? I would appreciate if you started putting OC on the overclocked ones so we know what is and isn't overclocked. Or should i just assume all of them are always overclocked?

I'm kinda new at this genre and for that i have a question bevore i buy this card.dcurrently i'm running a Asus H81M-Plus Motherbord and a Radeon R9 270x graphics card. I looked online for the stats so that i know that the GTX will fit in and run. But online i have seen that the Motherboard has a PCIe 2.0 slot but the r9 270x needs a PCIe 3.0 Slot and it'S running fine. Do you think i should upgrade my Mainboard with the Grafics card or can i just use my old one?

I have to say I'm more a fan of the aesthetics of the Founder's Edition. Given the lack of any significant performance gains from the partner cards thus far I'm very happy with the 1080FE.
