My name's Jen and I'm on a journey to pay off £27k of debt!!! I do regular cash stuffing and debt updates, and have a general chit-chat about my budgeting week. This week is a little different to usual as I empty all of my funds to cover an unexpected move!

I was in this position a few years ago. Just as my new rental contract ended and I was about to sign a new one, the lady that owned the house died and her will said the house was to be sold. As you said, it was very stressful and at the time I had no budget whatsoever. I am sure you will work it all out, you do seem to have things more under control than you thought xx

I can’t believe you’re still rolling through them all, thought I’d have sent you loopy by now haha! Yeah, I was so glad back then that we’d starting cash stuffing. No way would we have been able to turn things around so quickly! And SO glad we found such a beautiful home so fast, we were really lucky! Rental prices shot up shortly after.

Has the eviction been served legally? I don't trust the story you've been given one bit unless your landlady is family. She's probably realised she could get an extra £300 a month and knows it would be impossible to increase your rent that much. Did you try to offer more money, I'd hate to see you notice your current house up for rent again in a few months. I hope you can keep your dog with you, bear in mind under future tenancy agreements landlords have to give full consideration to pets as long as insurance is in place to cover them for damage. I've been on both sides of the rental market, this is the ugly side that needs to be reformed far more than they're planning. You're very strong, be proud of yourself.
Thanks. Yeah, she is family, and her circumstances are rotten. She lost her partner to Alzheimer’s a couple of months ago and the family are putting the pressure on so they can sell his house. I won’t be surprised to see if back on the market tbh but if I’m honest… I think we needed this push to find somewhere more suitable now that my son is older. At least in the new house he won’t be wedged into a box room 👍
@@budgetsdreams Terrible situation but I always believe things happen for a reason and go with it. On the positive side your previously cheap rent allowed you to do very well getting debt under control and I seem to remember your interest rates were extremely low so no need to feel rushed to clear them. On the other bright side as much as you seem unhappy about paying someone else's mortgage by renting, there are benefits. Boiler breaks, not your problem, water leak, not your problem, roof leaks, not your problem, etc. etc! Buying vs renting isn't as clear cut as many people think, benefits and pitfalls to both, if you see somewhere even better to rent it's very easy to move, if you own a house and want to move it's very expensive. Some years back I owned a nice enough house and then new neighbours from hell moved in, couldn't wait to sell, if I'd have been renting it would have been much easier and cheaper! Stay positive and try to take all the positives you can from the situation.
@@squadmeta You’re so right! There are huge benefits to renting. The only downside is the sense you are constantly “losing money” and no nest egg for little ‘un. We are going to give some serious thought as to whether we buy at all, or anytime in the near-ish future. To me it makes more sense to wait until our son is off on his own and we can then buy our forever home… which could be any size, anywhere. No consideration of catchment areas required 😂
@@budgetsdreams At some point in the future when the time is right take some financial advice, you can build nest eggs and get some passive income from other things than just property. For me personally I like some dividend paying shares, they give passive income and if needed I can sell small amounts, I can't sell a bit of a house. The more you learn now about the financial world the more you can give the little 'un a good money education that they will never get from school. If there's one thing I've learnt from random rich people I've known over the years is how they look after their money, there's a reason so many lottery winners go broke within a few years, they just don't know how to make the money work for them. I am so sorry that this is happening. I am so proud of you and how you are handling this. It is completely normal and ok to fall apart during this kind of thing. I am the same when it comes to being good at handling the crisis and then falling apart after.
Potential is an icky word to me as well. ADHD life and all that.
I also couldn't tell that your nails weren't perfect. They looked fine on camera and I couldn't see what was up with them.
ADHD life indeed! Currently flapping to get my son’s birthday cake finished because, you know, procrastination! Why do we do this to ourselves?!

Instead of the word potential use possibilities, don't worry about your nails we're here for you 🥰.
Try and look for the positives, I know it's hard and I feel for you I really do lovely, but you have saved up money in doing this to be able to pay for your deposit etc and it's a fresh new start for your family and you will be okay because you are strong and you have each other and your families and friends, and atleast you will be settled for Christmas.
You can do this lovely!
And don't forget ( in regards to your mental health) it's okay to take time for you and its okay to have a down day and it's okay to look after you! 💜
Your not moving backwards, keep your chin up and keep on making those steps in the right direction.

My sweetie, wish I could give you a big hug right now! Makes so much sense that you have such caring friends, because of YOUR PERSONALITY. I am very happy to be a little reminder that you should be kind to yourself 🤗. My family rents and throughout my childhood we had many adventures with homes so I totally understand you! This summer I have learnt that the children of my landlord (who is a very old lady in her 90's) plan to sell all the houses they will inherit and move to Sweden. Great shock for me, can't even do something about it. Wish I could afford to buy it, but sadly can't. Renting is so stressful. And prices always go up like crazy. I don't care for possession however I would love to stop moving every few years or so!
Oh no! I hope they give you plenty of notice and you end up finding somewhere perfect for you! You’re so lovely and kind, you’re in my thoughts often. Many people have heard me talk about “my Greek cash stuffing friend” haha! 💛💛💛

Jen I am so proud of you going through all this! Watching adds right now, so you can dedicate your first RUclips paycheck to moving expenses. Thank God we follow this system, otherwise you wouldn't just have this amount of money around the house laying around. You and your husband acted so fast, already found a house!! Truly admire that!! last time I was in a similar situation, I froze up. My father found the house I am currently living and talked to my landlord. I just send one month of rent to book it without even seeing the place! You are capable of amazing things 😘. Sending you my love, wish I could help you pack! I am so good at decluttering, packing and organising! Lol. You could make a home tour if you like! New beginnings are stressful but also refreshing. You got this 💜

You did sound a little excited when you talked of your new home 😉 so I’m sure once you are in and settled it will soon be time to get excited of where to put your Christmas decorations in your new home . As for the teachers..could have more potential comments…well you proved you achieved potential…you sound like a wonderful mum and also what a great wife in taking on the cash stuffing journey and succeeding..even though I’m newish here by you being able to pull on that money…YOU HOLD YOUR HEAD UP, you and your hubby did this and it’s a fantastic achievement and you have proved to yourself YOU DID IT,YOU TOOK CONTROL AND SAVED and you can do it again 👍🏻 .As for the dog…my nephew had a one year old dog and he was made redundant and had to move out of his rental…so I said I’d take the dog while he sorts his self out for a year….anyway 9 years later he’s still here 😉…they worm there way in to that heart somehow 😂lol . I’m putting the dog to the back of my mind for now… I just can’t cope with it and everything else going on. My mother in law did say “who knows, I might want to keep him permanently” so fingers crossed for that 🤞 He’d have a great life with her. She’s retired and loves being outdoors. We’re lucky to get him out around the block some days which is not fair for a Beagle. So, tbh, aside from the issues with renting a new place it has actually made us take stock of what’s best for him in general… could he be happier somewhere else regardless? Urgh… nope… not thinking about it 🙈😭

It sounds like she’s preparing for long term if needed which takes a huge stress off of you . As an undiagnosed ADHDer i was often told i "wasted my potential" or wasn't willing to unlock my potential. I just didn't know how to. I was diagnosed at 35 so now so feel like if i'd know that earlier things could have been different.
It’s so awful isn’t it, all we needed was someone to offer some guidance instead of just making us feel like we’re failing in some way. I like to think nowadays someone would consider WHY a young person might not be reaching their potential and come to the ADHD conclusion sooner. I’m happy to hear you have your diagnosis now and I hope it’s bringing more sense to your experiences and empowering you now 💛💛
Chrustmas is just a day, your familys secure is far more important,l really wish you all the best of luck, when you are as low as you can be, the only way is up, you are a great inspiration to lot of people. X

2 months is the standard notice period for a section 21 no fault eviction unfortunately
Thanks Tracy 💛 I did contact her mid panic and said 2 months wasn’t enough, she reluctantly extended to 4 months but by this point the tension was already there so I’m very relieved we have managed to move forward so quickly. It’s been a nightmare sorting out all the who owes what money for what. Meh… moving forward now though xx

Jen you are handling this so wonderfully, I’m so sorry this has happened to you and your family, I truly hope everything goes smoothly for you, and I suppose the only positive I can offer is that look how far you came this year with your savings, it’s heart breaking to have to unstuff them but you have done so amazingly that I know once you can you will bounce back and they will get topped up again much faster than you think xx

That’s awful I am so so sorry, as someone in a similar situation to you with a family and renting it’s a huge concern of mine that there’s no long term security. The government really need to address the rental situation in the UK.
Oh they do! It’s just awful. House prices in general are just disgusting! But what can anyone do about it? 🤷🏻♀️
In February we had to do exactly this, our situation was a little different but we literally had to up and leave our old flat in a week. If it wasn’t for my envelope savings we would have had to stay in a very awful situation. My heart breaks for you and your family because the amount of stress you have to go through to get a roof over your head quickly is a lot!

My wife and I started paying off our debt in late 2017, we had quite a bit. The only thing left is a car loan that actually goes back to late 2020. Since we had eliminated a huge chunk of our debt we have been putting serious money towards the car and also we have a decent emergency fund and ....drum roll.... a written budget that we started first of this year . We were putting money into a sinking fund to pay our real estate taxes, in the past we paid them at the very last minute and this caused us to pay a 10% penalty. Because we put the money aside and had it we paid it as soon as we got the bill (mid August) and thus we got a 2% early payment discount. It seems amazing 10% penalty or 2% discount that's a 12% spread and resulted in a $900 (US) savings. The best part is we didn't have to scramble to come up with the money and it didn't affect our lives in any way. So having that money even though it was for something else saved you a ton of anxiety, Bravo!

Sorry to hear of the last minute rental changes. Well done sourcing the new house, that's why we save. 💗 Rent is crazy in Canada too. $1600-$1800 CAD for a small one bedroom unit. That is 1050-1100 pounds. 😱 Hope you love the new place.

I don't know who you are but I love you and I am with you. I am currently at home with my little one, so I am big on budgeting at the moment too... Big hugs and keep up the good work (you have a lovely voice, very pleasant to listen to and I love the nail varnish colour too! ❤)
I also know how bad it is when you have to leave a place when it is not your own decision... This is the reason why we bought a house as soon as we were able to. At the time we only had one kiddo but I wanted security more than anything else - and I have to say it's worth every penny. Also, our mortgage is around the amount that you pay for rent now (and the way rent is going up is just scary... :( ). I think the sooner you can afford your own place the better, you are a strong and wise woman, I am sure you can make it happen if this would be your goal 💖
By the way, I am using Emma as my budgeting app, it's linked to my UK bank account so I can do all of this on my phone. I am not sure about how others feel but I am pretty worried about keeping all our monthly budget in cash at home so I have "virtual envelopes". It automatically directs things to the categories as you set it so it's also very convenient. If you need any help on this just give me a shout :)
Oh, one more! You mentioned that you are buying clothes from Next... Try the Vinted app! Since I discovered it, I haven't bought clothes new, apart from trousers (as I can't figure out my size without trying things on) but for skirts, blouses, jumpers etc. it has been amazing! I have some trusted brands (Dorothy Perkins is one) where size 10 fits me perfectly, when I buy those I don't seem to fail. I buy pretty much new branded bits for a fraction of the price - I never dressed so well, and for so little money... :) I am not buying home decor, kids clothes etc. from there too, works wonders and saves an incredible amount of money! Keep up the good work, you're doing great! 💝
