Great synopsis, and I agree entirely. I think you missed one factor that's slept on, Chase sets a floor for the value of points. If you accumulate miles at an airline or hotel, it's suspect for devaluation. By setting the 1.5 redemptions in the portal, you can accumulate points over time and not sweat the return you'll get on them... of course, whether the flights/hotels/etc. cost the same as going directly is a different question...
Would like to see these cc guru's run some vids on that. Cost directly vs thru the portal. I don't have a travel card so I don't know but it seems like this little detail ain't so little. Talk about "read the fine print". The difference could blow out all savings and even cost peeps
@@Bubbles99718 one channel and one blog did within last 3 weeks. Naturally they found portals to be typically slightly higher than booking direct hotels, cars. How else can they pay for 5x-10x returns? Don’t remember flights. But u should ALWAYS book flights direct. Edit: I can see booking flights 3rd party if it’s insanely cheaper and it’s last minute but non crucial travel.
The CSP is facing fierce competition from cards like Bilt, but the CSR has only gotten better with the Priority Pass restaurants benefit and the Sapphire lounge access, so it makes more sense to hold the CSR instead. Compared to its peers, the CSR is a better card than the Venture X unless you need Capital 1 lounge access. The Amex Plat has no free guest access for lounges, which makes it unaffordable for traveling with friends and family.
Great video, Lani!! I’m still on the fence with this one. I still can’t seem to wrap my head around the annual fee as compared to the competition! Great job breaking it down though!!
@@CallMeLani When comparing it to the CAP1VX af, that effective $250 af is still staring you in the face. I have to remember the flexibility of the travel credit and the 50% redemption within the portal to feel somewhat better about it.
It's interesting to me that no one considers the use of points as an annual fee offset. It's money you don't have to spend for something you would normally have paide cash for.
I don't its that people aren't aware of the option as much as its not a popular option as you can get more value in other manners. Thanks for commenting and stopping by!
I’ll expand and say what has changed is external to these cards. The primary reason the Reserve (and even the Altitude Reserve) have seen upticks in desirability is due to the devaluations of domestic travel partners. Devaluations in British Airways, Turkish, Virgin, hell throw in the anticipated devaluation of American. These devaluations lower our expected return on redeeming points for domestic travel. The Reserve (and AR) set up a floor to protect you from getting less value. They became more valuable because transfer partners became less valuable (in some use cases). Beautiful video and great work Lani 🤙
@@CallMeLani I could see Chase having it keep its head down and be solid. I just want to see some category improvements (4x travel? Mobile Wallet?) or play the status game at Hotels (IHG Gold/Platinum, Marriott something, Hyatt Discoverist) and make the other earners earn better. But really all they need to do is watch AmEx and Capital One continue doing weird things.
Your editing is amazing 🏆🏆🏆! If only CHASE would increase the Freedom Unlimited/Ink Unlimited multiplier to 2X on all purchases....... Perfect to pair with the CSR. Thanks for the info + video!
I first got my CSR back in August 2016 for 100K and enjoyed it, but I switch out for the 100K on the CSP. I got denied for the CAP1VX and that pushed me to down down on Chase and I swooped out the CSP for the CSR. I also was excited about the Chase lounge access, even tho I have access via my Ritz-C. So, in a backwards way, CAP1 along with the stripping of some of it made me appreciate the CSR more, and it's also a bit easier to deal with one less ecosystems. I still wanted the flex of getting approved the CAP1`VX and it's low effective af, but I will have to fine the old comfort I have always had with Chase.
Yep, this was my take home as well, simplicity will rule a lot of people’s wallets in 2024, and for others, will still thrive on maybe harder to use cards like the Platinum. I do like the idea of 1.5% on portals, and I think a lot of people like not having to worry too too much on transferring as much, not everyone is as crazy as us haha. Amazing intro too Lani, and very nicely edited! Next time we should guess the amount of times you say a word and then give us a gift at the end 😂😂😂
Great stuff as always Lani, the intro is fire! I keep expecting that the CSR will receive a major refresh but maybe it's already being "refreshed" with the new Sapphire lounges.
Editing Skills be 🔥. Totally agree that the CSR is "simple" haha. Totally see the value with the CSR getting that 50% boost. As of right now, all my travel & redemptions is directed internationally, so I value travel partners and a card like the Amex Plat more- but I could totally see a use case for it in my wallet when I start traveling more domestically. Great video Lani!
In my book the CSR is in 3rd place (last) when compared to the Platinum and Venture X. Feels outdated and is not SIMPLE😂 to fully offset the remaining $250 annual fee. As always great video and information hermano!🫵
Great review!! As the saying in the space goes, mileage may vary. For my use case, I transfer 100% of my Chase points to Hyatt which is the same with either the CSP or CSR so the difference of 1.25 vs 1.5 in the portal doesn’t really make a difference, and I am able to leverage the “online grocery” option through store APPs while in store which fills the grocery multiplier void and this is available on the CSP and not the CSR. I don’t fly through any airports with a Sapphire Lounge or PP restaurant so the PP lounge in my home airport (which serves food and drinks) is more than enough. Since i largely travel with my family the reduced Platinum lounge access is a non starter and the CSR fee automatically has to go to $550 plus the $75 AU fee and the VX with the 4 free AUs is a perfect fit for my use case. Thanks for the great review, the CSR might be in the cards someday, just not today for me!
Thanks, Ryan! You're correct, "mileage may vary." Not every card is for every person. I'll always recommend to others, get what fits within your lifestyle. Thanks for stopping by! Great to hear from you again
I’m late to this video, but I was attracted to the CSR because getting 1.5CPP is a cake walk. All these RUclips channels hype up all these crazy award flights but in reality it’s a big headache. Yes you can find something, but it’s usually always with a caveat like limited dates, wait lists, timing of transferring points, and potentially issues with bookings not getting confirmed because its an award flight.
🔥, thank you for not doing the standard review of the CSR. Educational video! Thank you for reminding me about the broken luggage- this happened to me recently and I’ll put this to use.
The primary gap in the Chase ecosystem is consistent grocery earning. The AMEX Gold and even the Cap1 Savor cards are much better earners in this category. The irregular quarterly 5x on a Freedom card is not consistent enough. If Chase were to ever rectify this shortcoming, I would likely put all my spending on Chase.
I do not disagree. I got the Amex Gold to cover my grocery spend. It would be great if Chase just made it a standard category on at least 1 of their cards. Thanks for stopping by David. Stay in touch and talk soon
Yes, absolutely. Depends on which Ink card as there will be some overlap with the CSR, but I have 2 Ink cards. Check out this video regarding the Ink Cash ruclips.net/video/z97fDaPVHAw/видео.htmlsi=2jGSOwSi6anZIKGh

Nice breakdown... the Sapphire reserve is my money maker for rental cars.... I will check out the hotels collection, to be honest forgot about this incentive.... Thanks for the info!
IMO the sleeper Chase trifecta is the Ritz, CSP, and any Freedoms. I hate rotating categories but you could easily add those as 4th and have a solid setup. Even Ritz, Venture X, Savor is a good combo. CSR would be good for Cashback and Chase travel portal.
You're one of my favorite channels for credit content bro. Your delivery is A1 👍🏾. Thanks for reminding us who have a CSR that we made a wise decision lol.

Great video Lani!! The Reserve isn't a card for me at this time but if my home airport ever got a Sapphire Lounge, it would put this card on the radar. Excellent video and breakdown as always.
Video has not aged well at all. CSR is the worst travel card and the Preferred is superior unless you are exclusively redeeming through the 1.5 portal. I mean hell Chase even knows it’s the better card because it’s in the name, it’s the Preferred card LOL
@@CallMeLani nothing to respect, bottom line the card, you’re paying 250 for travel protections and lounge access. Not a good card. Thank you for this comment! I feel it's important to share a different perspective to travel and rewards in this space. If I were in Atlanta, I'd def change my go-to airline to Delta, I'd probably focus on points that could be used with them. Now you can still book a Delta flight with chase points. But if you could earn more via Amex, that could be a well worth it option as well. Would have to consider your spending and travel goals first.
