- I've been excited for the Insta360 x4 but there are some serious issues right out of the gate.
There could be some problems with the firmware of this camera. It won't connect to several devices that I was able to use the Insta360 x3 on without any problems.
I was unable to connect it to an LG Stylo 5, an iPad mini 4, or an iPhone 15. I was finally able to get it to connect to a Samsung A14 and an A15 BUT not reliably. Sometimes it fails four or five times before finally connecting.
I believe Insta360 could've done better.
Same frustration here too!! I have tried 3 different iphones and the wifi of the camera doesn't even show up on any of these phone! Support is no help!
I'm sorry you're going through it... it is a pain and completely unnecessary. I hope you get it resolved. It's definitely going to make me think twice about getting another Insta360. Especially since they have some real competition now from other companies.
Fellow West Virginian here. I bought the X4 and had to uninstall and reinstall the app and got it working perfectly. Using IPhone 15 pro max. I’ll be out filming tomorrow when the big selfie stick arrives lol. Hope to see what you create soon.👍
Hey! Always awesome to meet another wild wonderful West Virginian... I tried uninstalling / reinstalling the app a couple times on the iPad mini and LG phone, but just couldn't get it to work. They are dated though, so that's probably the problem. So far, connecting manually with the Samsung is working well enough.
I hope you get some awesome shots with yours this weekend, are you getting the "Best 360" selfie stick / monopod?

Wow oh wow, this was driving me nuts. I just got my new X4 camera and could not activate it. I have the Samsung S24 Ultra, so it was the lastest Samsung phone, so that wasnt the issue. Spent about 5 hours trying to connect, putting it into the oven, cabinets , all over the place etc. Then I decided to disconnect my phone from its normal 5GHz Wifi connection, and connected through the 2.5 GHz connection. And what do you know it connected right away, established a connection and updated the firmware. So if nothing else works everyone, see if your phone is using your home 5GHZ, and if you have a 2.5 GHZ try that one instead.
I almost sent my X4 back, as it was my first insta360 camera, and I was just about to give up on it !

Just bought mine 06/10/2024. The connection is TRASH. Took 3 to 4 tries to connect. Filmed twice on the lake and now it no longer connects. On its 1st trip out, it’s no longer working. I’ve done manual WiFi input, reset the camera 3 times, tried it 30 different ways on the latest iPhone and even my backup iPhone 11… NOTHING WORKS, it’s so frustrating
I definitely feel your pain. It's ridiculous that this company can't get this right. All this activation nonsense, when we should be able to unbox it, turn it on, and just use it. It's just a camera, after all.

@@WildWonderfulWeekends just got back from the lake… it’s an interference issue. If there is other WiFi signals in the area. It will not connect. But go anywhere with no WiFi, INSTANT connection.

I just bought mine and could not even download the apps. Amazon says the return is allowed if unused. Wonder if they will take jt back after people try to use it but experienced issues?
I just got mine last week. I was so excited to get it...but I'm about to return it. The product came to me unready. I should be able to take it out of package and be able to use it right away.
Ok, got it working. The dive case instructions weren't sufficient. It was easier to get on the app and connect from there. Had to mess around with the app, now I can take videos.
I still think it should be plug and play ready. Hopefully editing and such aren't as bad.
Hey, I'm glad you got it working! I agree, the instructions aren't sufficient and it should definitely be ready to go right out of the box. I don't even try to edit on my phone any more, I only use Insta360 Studio on the Mac.

I also experienced connection/activation issue. I have iPhone 13 Pro Max, kept saying wifi password incorrect and also when registering the device, kept saying email address already exist which should not be correct because this is the first and only Insta device I have ever bought. After power cycling both devices and aborting some registering menu, it finally connected. Have no idea what got it to work.
Wow... that's nuts. It doesn't exactly inspire confidence. I just uploaded the first 8k, 360 video I've shot with this camera and it looks really good on my laptop but completely crappy on the Quest 2, which granted, the Quest 2 can't play 8k video, but even at 4k the x3's quality looks better (on the Quest 2, at least).

It's frustrating for sure, and "support" isn't much help. With new competitors coming up, like Kandao's Qoocam Ultra 3, I think I'm going to give another company a try when it's time to upgrade.

I had to reinstall the insta360 app in order to get it to work on devices that already had the app installed. Other than that, I have had 0 issues with the camera.
That's good news... I hope that was the only quirk you'll encounter. Have you exported any 8k, full-360 degree video yet?
I find that cables are everything. Try changing cables. Especially with USB C.

That sucks that you had problems connecting. My iPhone 15 Pro Max had zero problems connecting. I made sure that I updated the Insta360 app first. I also connect and edit mostly on an iPad. Only times it doesn’t connect to the iPad is if I forget to turn on Bluetooth. I’m wondering if your devices that are having problems, have not been updated to the newest Apple iOS? I’m running the newest Beta iOS versions on both devices with no problems. Hopefully your frustrations will soon fade as you are blown away with what the x4 can do!!!
Ya know, that is a good possibility. The iPhone 15 that I tried it on was my daughter's and by that time I had already tried it on my iPad Mini and my LG so I was already annoyed. hahaha BUT, I did get a chance to shoot a little with it over the weekend and the video / image capture is really awesome, I do like the camera.

So I have an old Android 9 Samsung and had the same issue that you described. I decided to delete the 360 app, reinstall the latest version and voila it worked like a hot dang. The actual camera controls of the app may not work perfectly but I don't use those anyway and do all my editing on my Mac. The activation was possible. Maybe my experience may help someone else.

Returning my camera since after activating I couldn’t get it to connect ever again to my iPhone 12. What a joke. I tried everything from resetting the camera, reinstalling firmware, reinstalling app, etc. with no luck and I’m on the latest iOS.
That sucks, my friend. I've only been able to connect mine to my phone twice since activating. I finally gave up on that and only use the Insta360 Studio app on my Mac to edit videos. But, that limits me on some of the special effect capabilities that are only available on the mobile app. It's crap.

@@techbrojoe Yeah, it's the same way with new drones. Almost everyone has nothing but good things to say about them but there are usually a lot of problems... at least early on. I appreciate you watching my video!

@@gizmo-dog It's garbage, from the fourth iteration of a product and from a company that isn't exactly new at this game. With new competition in the field now, I think I'll try a different company when it's time to upgrade.

Hi I found your video as I'm going through the same frustration. I already had x3 no problems but this x4 is not letting me activate it even though I already have the app on my phone. I agree it is a pain in the ass all these hoops. All I want to do is just use it. The app had already been updated. F#%king thing just won't play fair.
I got it connected to my phones wifi by uninstalling the app and then reinstalling it and following the prompts. Unfortunately at the same time it connected to my phone it killed the internet on my phone. Had to turn my phones wifi off to get the internet back on my hotspot for my pc. catch 22 wtf? Still unable to activate. I have turned everything off and on again several times even removed the battery. Eventually I did get to activate it on the app after many failed attempts to connect. It's has taken me all f%#king day. If they don't make this a simpler process I can't buy another one. I just don't have a whole day spare to waste on this. It is a nightmare that's over now. Thanks heaps for your advice and thank you to other people leaving their comments. It all helped.
Spot on... I know your frustration and, in my opinion, it's wholly unnecessary. There is no reason the x4 shouldn't just work, right out of the box. I'm looking forward to Canon releasing their consumer-oriented 360 / VR 180 camera later this year. If it delivers comparable (or better) performance and doesn't require the difficult activation ritual, I'm jumping off the Insta360 ship.

Just got mine today and initially setup for activation was done correctly on my iPhone 14 Pro. Then proceed update the firmware to 1.0.20 (May 2024 update).
After playing around with the insta360 app and turn off for charging, now i am unable to get pass the stupid “Bluetooth connecting” issue that has error of (9, 4).
Tried to delete app and iCloud backup app and reinstall back, no use.
Reset the camera and try to connect manually using Wi-Fi, no use.
It just cannot go pass the “Bluetooth” section
Funny thing that under my iPhone Bluetooth discovery scan, I am unable to find the device also but Wi-Fi can.
Now I am unable to edit my video right now until I get my quick reader if wanna edit in phone 😢
I'm hoping Canon releases the 360 / VR 180 hybrid they prototyped. If they do, and if it performs well at all, I will probably not buy another Insta360 for exactly the same frustrations. Too much pain for too little gain. Take care, my friend!

I hate to hear that, my friend. I'm hearing some people have really good luck with their x4 and getting it to activate. It took me many tries to get things lined out on mine and STILL I can't process videos using my phone. I have to do everything on my Mac. Good luck to you, I hope you can get it lined out!

I had the same problem. The issue was the firmware. Mine came with a pre-v1.0.6. 1.0.6 came out on the day of launch. I had to copy the update to a microSD card and it updated automatically after inserting the card and powering on. After that I was able to connect with all my devices. Not that a newer v1.0.8 firmware is now available.
I believe that was part of my problem as well... that an old devices. Thankfully it seems to be working well enough now. I spent the weekend camping and capturing video with it and I was happy with the results.

@@katesith1112 I just copied the file to the card with the card connected directly to the computer via a card reader.

Nice, I'm glad that worked! I'm seeing more and more folks having to update the app (twice, for some reason) and getting prompted for a firmware update on their camera as soon as it activates. I got prompted for the firmware updates as soon as mine (finally) connected to my new phone.
I ran into the same problem with the same problem on my Phone 15 Pro Max and had to do the same, just connect manually initially. I haven't tried the or my Samsung yet.
I'm glad it's activated and working for you now. It's not the most expensive camera in the world but certainly pricy enough that it should work like it's supposed to right out of the box.

I feel your pain, man. While I could activate it ok, it wouldnt do anything until updated, and it wouldnt update whatsoever. I really had to jump through hoops to get that done!
Wow... yeah, it kind of feels like it was rushed out the gate before QC had a good chance to work out the kinks. I wonder if it had anything to do with Canon announcing that they are releasing an 8K, 360 / VR 180 cam later this year. I can imagine that made the folks at Insta360 get the jump on the market.
Is your x4 working correctly now?
@@WildWonderfulWeekends Definitely working OK now but as you say still a few bugs. Some of the menus disappear way too fast before I can read them, but otherwise its working OK!
Also make sure you don't have a vpn on your phone or just turn it off till it's connected

it must take forever to transfer footage wirelessly. you should get usb-c hub with a fast card reader and put the memory card directly into a computer or the iphone 15 pro max. transfer speeds can go super fast that way. over 100mb a second.
Very true, my friend. USB-C is the only way I do it, which is a bit limiting but the image quality is worth having to deal with the large file sizes, for me.

Yes, it's really the only way to go. I use a USBc cable.
If you could afford an X4, then stopping cheap. And go buy a good phone I have the S24 and I went for my X32 and X4 Manhattan. No issues connecting to it, so go buy a better phone. Hi, agree with activation. The only thing good that would come out of activation is, if it recognizes a different phone trying to connect to it. And then send us an email of that location. Because I lost my brand new X3 on the freeway due to selfie. Stick, then bought a new one. And? Got a better stick and haven't that issue now?
Yes, I suppose getting a better phone before getting the x4 might've prevented the issues I had. Then again, I did try it with an iPhone 15 which is a pretty good phone. Plus, I hate the idea of having to upgrade so much technology just for getting a new camera. Especially when the x3 worked perfectly with the iPad mini I already had and the Insta360 app worked on it with zero problems. I believe the company could do a better job of making it's product more stable and compatible for existing customers. Just my opinion though. I hope your x4 continues to serve you well!
@WildWonderfulWeekends I agree. I hate how much bigger it is for the weight on a motorcycle with selfie stick plus 20 mins with 8k was 32 gb I think haha. Also stupid how the gps remote won't work the normal one. But the 150$ one with screen works. Smh
