In the US, we call that "jumping the shark," when one particular scene or episode is the turning point in a TV show, and the rest of it is all down hill from there. That phrase comes from when Fonzie, on "Happy Days", jumped over a shark on a pair of water skis wearing his leather jacket. The show just wasn't the same anymore.

That Doctor Who one annoys me. The Kandyman was actually a great concept aesthetically hindered by the BBC actively attempting to get rid of the show. How can you signify that as the thing that killed classic doctor who and not even mention the timeless children, which has annihilated the entire show for the rest of time and even retroactively. The timeless children has done far more damage.

The Dick and Dom thing - Jesus that show was always Risque... It reminded me of TISWAS from way back when... And that show pushed a lot of Boundaries! No, it died its death as Dick and Dom got bored... It ran for along time after that incident, but it was slowly dying... It had its time! Again, just like TISWAS...
Olly Murs Mistake KILLED X-Factor??? GIVE OVER!!!! No it didn't... Plain and simple as...
Jet's Injury - OK! Much as it lasted a lot longer, I will give you this one... Diane Youdale (Jet) was my pin up for my teenage years... I adored her! Hell still do (Though she has come out as LGBTQ+ and is in a happy relationship with a woman... Bless her! Nice to see!) ... And when she left the show after getting injured, I kept watching but was not a regular viewer anymore! She was extremely popular with the audience and her loss hurt teh show... 100%!
The Kandyman - Doctor Who: NO NO NO! Much as even us fans malign this episode... THIS DID NOT KILL THE SHOW! That was Michael Grade! HE LITERALLY ADMITS IT... HE KILLED DOCOTR WHO AS HE JUST HATED THE SHOW!
Cilla Quits - Yup! This did kill Blind date! It never recovered and the reboot did not last!
"Punchgate" - I dont think it was this that killed Big Brother - It was already failing in ratings long before... I did however kill Roxanne Pallets career! As far as I am aware, she has had no major roles since then!
Everybody Leaves ... Hmmm! Yeah, NO! What killed Spitting Image was in their own words Margret Thatcher's resignation... They really did try but she was the icon! The Writers have even joked since when John Major was revealed to have had an affair with Health Minister Edwina Currie "If he had only told the world about that sooner, We may still have been on air! He was just to grey and boring to make fun of... "
How did Sherlock Survive? - OH DEAR GOD DON'T REMIND ME!!! I CANNOT disagree with this one... When this one hit, It was obvious teh show was going off the rails, but what actually killed it was "DID YOU MISS ME?" - COME ON WATCHMOJO ADMIT IT... Moriarty's promised return that never was... That KILLED the show... They can NEVER hope to bring it back after that! Though How did Sherlock Survive? takes a firm second place!

Dr Who was NOT cancelled for 15 years. In fact, it was never cancelled at all, this is a fallacy put about by disgruntled fans in the early 90s. It stopped being made completely by the BBC from 89-96 because the Beeb wanted it to be co-funded by an outside production company (This was forced on them by Thatcher's government). This eventually happened with Philip Segal and the Paul McGann movie that was supposed to be the pilot for a new co-production with the US. That it failed (Only in the US, It was a hit in the UK), left it once again in limbo until all the rights reverted back to the BBC in the 2003s. only then could it finally be brought back. between 96 & 03 Segal's production company still held the rights to make a TV series, although this never came to pass. So, there you go, Never Cancelled!

First off, you mislabelled when Doctor Who aired; the classic series ended in 1989, not 1985 (when the show was also put on hiatus during Colin Baker's time). And second, the show wasn't put on hiatus after Sylvestor McCoy's time (when the Kandyman and his only appearance The Happiness Patrol was) for 15 years but 16 (when it came back in 2005). For me and several others, Doctor Who was killed when the Doctor was revealed to be the Timeless Child and then further when Ncuti Gatwa took on the role. I should also like to add Britain's Got Talent as it hasn't been the same since David Walliams left and was replaced by Bruno Tonioli who was a poor choice.
