    Komatsu used a fuel float tank on those dozers and it is mounted down low on the left hand side.
    The fuel tank on the dozer is located up high on the dozer and it fills the fuel float tank using a float valve. The tank has nothing to do with the air fuel ratio. The fuel return do go to the float tank. If the machine has excessive smoke it is probably due to float valve in the float tank being stuck open or not sealing. The main purpose of the float tank is so the pt pump can suck fuel up instead of it receiving pressurized fuel from the main tank. If the pt pump is receiving fuel that it already pressurized that acts like a multiplier and the pt pump is pressurizing already pressurized fuel which increases fuel flow and throws off the fuel metering. The float tank needs to be cleaned out and the float valve must work properly. If you ran the dozer from a bucket of fuel on the ground you would see a difference.

    Hi Warren. Kiwi mechanic here. I’ve worked on those old Komatsu dozers. So without the float tank the cylinders would fill with fuel due to the head of fuel in the main tank. That’s why the float tank is mounted lower than the main fuel tank. Hopefully that helps.

    • @svthorasailing4868
      @svthorasailing4868 Месяц назад

      No disrespect to you but how does a tank flood the cylinders if first it goes through the high pressure pump then the injectors,from my understanding everything is metered flow after the pump.I haven’t worked on these old girls so can’t get my head around it.Would have thought the smaller tank with the float was a return tank in-line to the main,cheers.

      @@svthorasailing4868been few years since i worked on , but the injectors have no poppet valves . the pintle closes the inj. hole whn on outter base (hi ) cam . cam lobe WIDE so it stays closed but for a time to fill then inject and stay closed until nexy cycle . shut off , tank hi , gravity can slowly fill thru any open injector mid cycle .

    • @8GMranch
      @8GMranch Месяц назад +2

      Hi John, thanks for sharing, I’ve had this before multiple times, I remove the float tank from the circuit and fit an electronically controlled fuel tap on both supply and return lines on the tank, no more dribble into the pots, those float tank ball valves are very finicky!

    • @RobJohn80
      @RobJohn80 Месяц назад +4

      Those are all incorrect. The purpose of the float tank is so the pt pump does receive already pressurized fuel from the main tank. The head pressure from the main tank causes the engine to over fuel. If the pt pump receives fuel under any pressure it acts as a multiplier by pressurizing fuel that has already been pressurized with increases fuel flow and the pump is unable to properly control fuel pressure. The pt fuel system stands for pressure time and the head pressure from the main tank throws off the pressure. The only purpose of the float tank is to eliminate head pressure so the pump can pull fuel instead of being force fed fuel.

    Warren, really enjoy your hands on videos. For many decades back in New Zealand I did fuel consu😅motion testing on this style of Cummins with the PT system. On each combustion stroke air enters the fuel return line via the injectors. To stop this air being measured in the fuel return system we had the fuel return plumbed into a separate small tank. This tank was feed by the supply line fuel pipe. The engine supply was from this small tank and the return fuel line went back to the small tank. As the fuel in the small tank dropped a float opened up allowing the tank to maintain its fuel level. This small tank was directly vented to the atmosphere to allow the air out. We measured for the fuel consumption only the fuel going into the small tank. This is probably the set up on this dozer.
    Hope this helps and please continue with there informative videos.

    Back in the day, when I had a couple turbo d 220 s(262 HP), when you got reman heads for them from Cummins, along with the new pipe plugs the gave you in a little bag(for the fuel line passages) they also supplied you with some Allen head small plugs that screwed into the top surface of the head, either to be used on naturally aspirated or turbo d 220 s (which one I cant remember). Then later on down the road all heads we would get from Cummins reman would have the tapped holes in the top of heads welded up and ground away so they must have determined that they weren't necessary.

    Warren my D65E has a header tank down below behind the engine. It does have a float. The only problem I had was the float valve got stuck and I was not getting fuel to the fuel filter. I had to beat on the tank to get the float valve to release. I think they installed them so the dozer could work on severe incline!
    I don't know more about them!

  • @wazza33racer

    An engine like that Cummins should have a steady trickle on the return line. Cant imagine why any diesel would need a float in the tank to alter fuel flow....... In the old days, people would put a coin in the return line with a hole drilled in it to boost fuel pressure and over fuel them. Usually burns a hole through the pistons. Give it to you warren, that pump is a real finger jammer to get into that space. The worst Cummins for having timing problems, was the twin turbo NTA-475.....it had some kind of mechanism on the cam boxes that gave different injector timing. They were popular in Australia during the 1980's but everyone quickly discovered they broke down an awful lot, the variable mechanism had a habit of malfunctioning.

  • @ChrisHarding-lk3jj
    @ChrisHarding-lk3jj Месяц назад +1

    The float tank is located low on the left side frame under the seat. The purpose of having the float tank has to do with the fuel tank being mounted higher than engine and head pressure from gravity forcing fuel into the pt pump so it could pull fuel normally. If you feed a pt pump pressurized fuel even at 1 psi you will increase the fuel delivered to the engine and over fuel it.
    It sounds like the float valves not working in the float tank and head pressure from the main tank is causing over fueling. You need to clean out the tank and make sure floats working.

    G'day Warren, I'm not sure if I can help however. The main fuel tank supplys the small tank via the float valve. The small tank supply to the injection pump.The injector return line goes to the small tank. I was of the understanding this was somthig to do with constant fuel supply to the injector pump. It's forty odd years since i worked on a D600 DRMCo grader with this type of setup. The Komatsu may be different. Cheers, Butch.
    ps dose the small tank have a breather to atmosphere?

    I am going to disagree with Warren. A 220 Cummins is a good engine but way under powered. I drove a truck with a 220 this truck took an hour to go 13 miles on the highway. I had do downshift going down hill when I hit a headwind. I do believe a 220 was good in its day. And an old fart like me used to hear I would never get lost because I always had a smoke trail. And Warren has better luck than I do. I installed a 12 volt starter on a 24 volt truck. It only lasted about a month. It turns out the started was mislabled when is was rebuild. Thank you for another nice video.

    Warren, sorry if this is a stupid question. Where would an amateur/DIY guy go for reliable service information? Mostly for Cat. Congrats on your daughter’s graduation.

    I have a feeling Warren has passed down to his daughter his dedication and example of earning your own way in life and all the ethics to go with it. Congratulations to her and wish her all the best in her future endeavors. Made my comment before you talked more about your daughter later in the video. Agreed with everything you said about what these liberals are doing to your country. Exact same here in Canada. Month of Gay Pride and talk is always about diversity, equity, inclusion. When the hell is there going to be "heterosexual month" for those of us ensuring the human species goes on? Tried posting that question in the comments of an MSN linked story. IMMEDIATELY CENSORED BY LEFTIE MSN.

    It has become a war of wills and communism in Cali and the states of man are at odds. Let humanity prevail with ethics, logic, and simple truth.
