I'm Indian-American, and I find it ironic how I bought a new video camera on the exact day the Emmy's were, just when Alan Yang said that Asian parents should give their children cameras instead of violins. Guess my parents are on the right track! Haha

He meant typical Asians from China Japan and Korea, not India or Pakistan

He meant them all actually. That 17 million figure includes EVERYONE. Asia includes all Asian.

Kyle Lucien I agree with Mr0011011. Also, typical Asians? What the hell is a typical Asian? Asia is a huge region that has a lot of different people, so East Asians aren't "typical Asians".

Prajeth Nagaraja I know India is a part of Asia geologically, it's just if you are in any Western country, people use the word Asian to describe yellow skins mostly, and would particularly specify Indian.

Don't want to be that guy but Yang is wrong, there are millions of examples of Asian filmmaking. Poor guy either can't remember that Bruce Lee made great action films or that Akira Kurosawa and Yasujiro Ozu are cinema legends. Sorry, but come on countries are represented in film, maybe not in American films but there's such a thing as foreign cinema.

You missed his point. He said 17 million Asian-AMERICANS. Asian AMERICANS like himself are always "foreigners" at home in the US. He wants more creative Asian-Americans behind the camera so they can tell their own stories. You bringing up kung fu and samurai masters just perpetuates stereotypes. I wonder how many times Alan Yang's been called jackie chan growing up.... why cant he just be a normal ass dude...

Samurai Masters? WTF? Do you know who Kurosawa and Ozu are? I mean you know that there's such a thing as foreign cinema, right? As a latino, I was never inspired to make films by Mexican Americans I was inspired by actual Mexican filmmakers like the 3 amigos. Lee is the equivalent of other action filmmakers, I mention his films in particular because his films have such a big cult following. I mean you need to watch more movies if you thought that I didn't get it. Seriously, I never say my race is stereotyped when someone says that Del Toro films exist and I shouldn't say that Mexican filmmakers are not out there because his films are horror like.

      > I mean you know that there's such a thing as foreign cinema, right?
Look man foreign movies are dope and are absolutely inspirational, I agree. Asian cinema in the past 50 years have been incredible nobody is disagreeing with that. Japan - > HK -> Korea, so I get it. I'm glad you're more inspired by Mexican filmmakers than Mexican American ones, but that's not his message. He mentions the Italian American legacy on American cinema and wants the same thing for Asian AMERICANS. A lot of Asian American immigrants in America are pushed to study or practice a classical instrument, so he's trying to inspire them to get into filmmaking.
When you brought up Bruce Lee and Kurosawa I got triggered thinking that this is what the average person thinks of when they think of Asian American cinema. Why not Justin Lin or Ang Lee or even James Wan. So I'm thinking to myself "Great, are we going to be only known for martial arts and samurai movies?" His message has nothing to do with Asian filmmaking whatsoever. I'm not here to argue or fight. I just wanted to clarify on his message, that's all.

It has to do with Asians in films, He says the only fictional character one recognizes is that of the foreign exchange student in Sixteen Candles. So there are many Asian actors out there that have done something with cinema, here Yang speaks as though he's never seen films with such actors. It's not just about America, I didn't hear him just mention America as the place. And Kurosawa should not be seen as an average person's thought of Asians in cinema because he made films famous for their stories not who starred in them. I would say the same thing for Italians in cinema. But I get your message.
