  • Andrew takes you on a walking tour of the Uptown/Carrolton neighborhood to explore the wonderful house floats that have been popping up for Mardi Gras 2021. FULL NOLA PLAYLIST • New Orleans Virtual Tours
The term Yardi Gras has been coined to explain this new tradition that was started by the Krewe of House Floats to fill in the void due to the loss of parades this year with the Krewe of Red Beans starting a community project called "Hire a Mardi Gras Artist". And now, Free Tours by Foot is bringing it to you wherever you may be.
Some of the notable house floats you will see are associated with the Krew of Muses, the Mystic Krewe of Unicorns, and many more. Here is a map of the house floats if you want and can visit in person www.kreweofhousefloats.org/map.

Another outgrowth of COVID lockdown that I haven't heard you mention before (but I might have missed it): Front Porch Concerts! As you might guess, local musicians really struggled during the lockdown. A number of them either: 1) Moved to Texas, Mississippi, Alabama or somewhere else that wasn't as restrictive as New Orleans in order to find work; 2) Desperately tried to hold on by using savings, help of family/friends and hope it would end soon; 3) started performing "Porch Concerts" here in town. Porch Concerts were pop-up gig sites, which happened and are happening all over the city. They are often held at the home of a friend or family member of a working musician, with no license, permits, etc. Many even sold food and drinks made on the spot. We had several Front Porch Concerts at our house on Constantinople St, just off St Charles. Our experience was that the great majority of New Orleans' citizens appreciated these events, and tipped accordingly. Porch concerts have continued even after the pandemic has eased, despite the fact that the Mayor's office tried to get in on the action by requiring that anyone hosting such an event would be required to have a "COVID protocol," (whatever that is) AND pay a fee of one $100-$500 dollars. Most people simply ignored these attempts by the city to take control of (and raise revenue from) Front Porch concerts, including us. I hope they continue, and plan to do my part in support. facebook.com/william.robinson.9400/videos/329825062409010

There should still be some around then! The houses decorated through Hire a Mardi Gras Artist/Krewe of Red Beans (last house in this video and about 30 others) are supposed to stay up through the end of the month. Krewe of House Floats participants agree to remove their decorations by March 1st, but I can guarantee you that plenty of them will want to keep things festive for a while. This is just a guess, but I'd expect the ones on this route to come down relatively early - Kern Studios, which installed many of them, has the people power to take things down fast, and they'll probably want to get their creations back in out of the rain ASAP.

As a member of The Krewe of Tucks…. People that live on st. Charles ave do not appreciate the toilet paper. So we did some research and found that if our “Streamers “ were smaller than actual toilet paper we could use it. Now we throw “streamers.” Technically.

Explain a street of mansions, are there a lot of streets with mansions?

Yes. The Garden District is filled with houses of all sizes including dozens and dozens of mansions. You can get a better idea of the neighborhood here freetoursbyfoot.com/garden-district-new-orleans/.

The first "float" had Coach Nick Saben, hence the elephant.

I don’t really get what’s so funny about the unicorns... must be an inside joke!

It's not exactly an inside joke as much as it is a local finding a particular DIY setup funny.

What the hell was so funny about the unicorns??? I don’t get it! I’m insulted as a matter of fact, that I’m excluded from something ‘inside’ seemingly! It’s not poorly done is it? It might not be the best in your eyes, or it’s something else that I’m not getting. I APPLAUD ALL THE DECORATIONS the effort the time, their own hardly earned money in these times. You ALL ROCK! Thank you 🙏🏻 I do love your tours, will continue but that was just a little off ❤️❤️❤️

Hey Linda! I echo your applause of all the decorators and this one most of all - I got the giggles mostly because I think it's a brilliant send-up of what the most pompous parts of Mardi Gras look like. No inside joke, just pure appreciation. Thank you for watching!

Thank you, Mary. That is very nice to hear. As for the P.O. box, it's really up to the individual tour guide. We don't handle any payments that come in. These links are set up and controlled by them.
I did forward your message to Andrew to see if he has another way for you to reach him.

Hey, thank you Mary! Appreciate you watching. Sadly all I've got is my home address for now, but you're kind to ask. We'll have another vacation coming soon!

I don't think he tore into it, I got the impression he genuinely loved it as it epitomised what Mardi Gras is - crazy OTT and colourful.

Ok. I read him wrong. Sure felt like he was putting his nose down at it.
