I have 2 Grayls, the GeoPress & the UltraPress(non-titanium) & while I do like them I only use them for day to day water bottles. The weight, of the non-titanium ones at least, are just to much for me to justify taking on any hike more than three days. As for the filter longevity you can use them longer than what the company says just be prepared for a longer press time. As the filter gets more & more clogged it has a tendency to shoot water past the o-ring on the filter up at the user. So press very gently down with an old filter. Pre-filtering, especially with that Florida swamp water, will help extend the life of the filter.

Good to know. Plan to pre-filter. Thanks for info. Happy New Year. Keep Smilin'

The weight of the Grayls, titanium or otherwise, seems to be about the same. The titanium actually looks to be a couple of ounces heavier than the plastic models.

@@andymytys Ya, the reason I went titanium is the possibility to use as a boiler. Have decided to go stoveless on the Florida Trail, but future trips might tempt me to take brs or wood burner. Always experimenting. Happy New Year. Keep Smilin'

@@packtoter these days titanium is so light, you could have gone with the non-ti version and, with the weight savings, gotten the much more efficient to boil Toaks 700 ml pot without adding any more weight. The pot has a nice height to width ratio for cooking. Even with the purchase of the pot, you would have had an extra $75 in your pocket compared to going with the ti model ($35 in your case, given the sale price).

@andymytys Good point. I could have saved even more as I have the 550 ml pot already and it boils all the water I need. Can even FB BOIL my Ova egg omelets in it. Keep Smilin'

I am in the Midwest farm belt and the Grayl is my filter of choice. I am very picky about water quality. It goes that one step further to be a purifier. I have the one regular Grayl in every vehicle and I do have the Ti model for hiking. Well worth the money in my book.

Glad you've come over to the Grayl side! A Millbank bag (UK Army invention, modern versions being sold online) as a prefilter will keep finer sediment out of the water than a Buff. Recommended to preserve the life of your Grayl's filter.
Just got back from five days with a Grayl ultralight compact (I don't think they sell them any more. 16 ounces filtered water capacity). Up and down 500 meters at 25 degrees average every day, sometimes twice. The weight of the Grayl wasn't a problem, but the weight of 3 liters of filtered water was. I should have stopped at 2 liters. Lol.

I ordered the Grayl titanium for a couple of special purposes. I'm doing a fun, bushcrafting survival course in CO that requires a cook pot or system, like the pathfinder system, to place in a fire (as fire building is part of the bushcraft course). Since I have been interested in Grayl for travel overseas, I thought it would be a neat system to experiment with during this survival course. Second, there are spots on the CO trail and on other trails here in the west that have nasty sources from livestock tanks as well as run off from fields of cow and livestock waste and agricultural chemicals. Grayl is specifically supposed to be better at filtering more of the viral and bacterial crap out of those water sources than the UL BeFree and Sawyer. I also hope it helps them to taste better as opposed to simply using tablets in conjunction with my typical UL filter. I'm sure I could do the same with an older pump style system that weighs more, but then the weight advantage is equalized in comparison with the Grayl. So, I purchased the Ti Grayl to use in the cow patty water areas. I rationalize that it will also be great for travel to other countries. All in all, it's just fun to experiment with new gear. I probably won't use this consistently when doing my backpacking trips, but its a fun bit of kit to have in my gear closet for specific situations and some day hiking. Have a great New Year and Cheers!

Headed for Florida Trail with mine. Didn't filter water on the Colorado Trail this summer, but was careful where I snagged water. Lots of cattle in certain areas. I went with the titanium because I would like to start experimenting with a wood burner when I return from the Florida Trail. Used a ZipZtove for years, now there is a smaller wood burner that looks very efficient. So if I can combine a filter with a boiler I might start filtering my water, and go back to having hot meals. Remains to be seen. Happy New Year. Keep Smilin'
