Daniel, thank you for your detailed explanations; I love your videos and the sincere way in which you discuss topics. The way in which you discuss games is not only fun to listen to, but useful for me as well give that you seem to have similar tastes in media/art as I do. It was your video on Dungeon Degenerates that convinced me to take the plunge. Keep up the good work!
Fantastic list and recommendations! I'm eager to see what the future holds, especially the Warhammer Quest playthroughs (which was how I found your channel). Here's to your 2020, sir!
Thx a lot for your thorough work here. Core Space is still on my to play list. I am very excited about this game and put very high expectations into this. Indeed, a dedicated table for the 3D board is highly recommended for Core Space 😉 Recently I got Machina Arcana. It is challenging but it makes so much fun to play. Keep up your excellent work in future!
The best New to Me of 2019 1. Marvel Champions (wasn't expecting to like this as much as I did, though I've been playing LCGs for a long time like Arkham, AGoT, and Netrunner) 2. Dungeon Degenerates (just speaks to me on all levels, really a perfect game, would be #1 if the setup and teardown was less) 3.Spartacus: A Game of Blood and Treachery (finally got this in a trade, have been wanting it for a while) 4. Dark Souls (wave 3 stretch goals have made this game complete, I'm not a kickstarter backer so I don't have the same hatred for SFG, though they definately deserve it) 5. Unmatched: Battle of Legends (A great 2 player game with the right amount of tactics for the length of play, breezy)
It's a real shame that some companies don't offer the same materials in both the base kickstarter and retail versions. Having just gotten back into gaming after a hiatus (and something to do until my "writer's block" for building my model railroad is over - one gets those from time to time) I missed out on a ton of kickstarter games that have received a lot of coverage and you can't get the same game at retail at all - unless you want to spend a fortune on Ebay, which I can't afford. Thanks for your list.
That's true, but don't worry about it too much, because every year there are too many great games to play. Don't worry about missing something great, because something great is always right around the corner! I'll soon be posting my games to look forward to in 2020 which will contain mostly KSers, but many of those you can jump on for the same price as a late pledge, so you won't miss anything.
Fantastic Video. When you talk about Core Space, you should really check out Galaxy Defenders again even if you think it is not your cup of tea. Fantastic NPCs with its addon Operation Strikeback, fantastic mission skripting and a very clever AI system (of course). My top 4 this year: 1. Street Masters Aftershock 2. Cthulhu Deckbuilding Game (with Dunwich) 3. Dungeon Degenerates 4. Secret Unknown Stuff- Escape from Dulce. Biggest disappointments/mostly negative experiences: Lotr- Journeys Gloom of Kilforth Sine Tempore Arkham 3 Mediocre games: Hand of fate Metal Dawn Defense Grid Hexplore It I have to play Death may die more often to see where it will land on this list. ;) I have to check out Hellboy as it seems. ;)
I've finally found a copy of Escape from Dulce! Getting it with the expansions tomorrow. Galaxy Defenders is a little too complex for me to really get into. I just can't get into the way Ares designs their games. Too much to keep track of for me to play solo. I haven't even heard of Metal Dawn or Defense Grid. Too many games to keep track of!
This was a fun video. One game I was surprised to see was missing from the table is Middara. You were excited to crack open that game in your video overview from earlier this year, but the future content you hinted at never materialized. Did Middara end up not impressing you as much as you'd hoped, or do you think it would make the 6-10 range on your extended best of list?
I'll be reviewing it soon. I, too, expected to like it a lot more than I did. Unfortunately, there's just too much reading of story in the game. I think it gets in the way of the gameplay. It's like they wrote a novel, and then smashed a game in between the chapters. The mechanisms are great, and the game is good, I just don't want to read for 20-30 minutes before playing a mission. The last time we played, we literally read for a longer time than we played. That really killed a lot of my desire to continue playing, but we are playing again this week. It could also use way more enemy variety. I'm super tired of fighting cave sickles and water loas. But I am definitely in the minority on that one. Most people tend to LOVE the game. And don't get me wrong - it is a very good game. It just doesn't fit in with my time these days.
@@TheDungeonDive Very interesting, hearing that actually makes me feel better about skipping the second Kickstarter. I tend to lean towards emergent narrative over written story in my games, and I also thought Middara's story book, as cool as it is for what it is, seemed like super overkill when compared to its peers. I'm looking forward to your full review video, and also your video for Dark Venture!
It‘s been a long time and i am curious whether you still got Skull Tales is on your shelve and have you tried to bring it on the table with the new rules?
Great list Daniel! I gotta ask - did you get a chance to play Aeon's End Legacy? And if so, how is it? I've been interested in the IP, but wasn't sure which to start with.
I totally agree with Skull tales full sail, man that game really dissapointed me, lovend the dungeon part of it but the voyage phase was a bummer. Really tried and tried to like it but sold it and got myself a copy of Hellboy the Kickstarter. Great video always enjoy watching them.
One game that’s on your list that I have been very interested in but still on the fence, is that Cthulhu death may die, the price for one and I just wanted to know how easy is it to learn and play? Are there a lot of complicated rules and is it playable solo, would it be considered a gateway type game ?
Great Video thank you Sir..Is Dungeon Crusade in your wish for 2020 ? I'mcurrently trying to finish painting minis for Darklight in order to play it in color....hard work as I don't like to paint the same mini more than twice..:-)
Oh yeah. Dungeon Crusade was on my list for 2019, but it won’t be out until 2020. Really looking forward to it! Rodger and I should be getting together this year for a video!
Concerning Skull Tales. We really liked the adventure phase, the town phase is o.k., but the voyage phase? 😮 wow! Still keeping the game in hope someone houserules the voyage phase, cause Eclipse Tutorial won‘t for sure... I still think, I really is a good game even if you skip the voyage phase completely...
I'm still keeping some hope alive for the game, I just don't have the time to get past all the hurdles with it right now. All things being equal, I'm going to gravitate towards a game that doesn't need a lot of work from me.
Great list: I just got aeons end legacy and new age for Christmas and they will be my first deck builders. Cthulhu Death May Die is awesome and like you I tend to hate CMON games as I find them too simplistic and boring. So happy I was able to get the KS bonus box for free with purchase or base game from a game store because it really adds tons of content (literally triples amount of investigators you can use and doubles the GOOs and adds 3 more episodes, 2 that contain unique minis). Have you played the other game on the adventure games series? Got both for Christmas. Also as soon as I saw skull tales on your table I knew it would be your biggest disappointment as it was also mine (luckily I didn’t buy it but was so looking forward to it based on what it looked like). My top 5 would be in no order Cthulhu Death May Die, journeys in middle earth, Tainted Grail, outer rim and
I have not played the other game in the Adventure series, but I definitely want to. I want to try Outer Rim, but I just can't get excited for anything Star Wars. I really wish FFG would have made that game in their own universe. Tainted Grail will be a 2020 game for me since that's when I'll get it with the KS stuff. :)
if you want a non Star Wars bases outer rim you can play firefly or Xia. I love Star Wars which is one of the reasons I love the game but I understand it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.
Skull Tales was indeed my biggest disappointment this year ... so sad. Impossible to play, terrible rulebook and even the erratas and files you can download from BGG didn't help at all. Great video as always ... I will gladly try out some of the games you liked because our taste for games is normally pretty similar :-)
It's sad to see Dark Ice Games abandon Memento Mori. I get that it's too expensive but now they are remaking, remastering it in a completely different way with no confirmation of being able to use card etc from the other game. Not even a 2.0 but a different game entirely it seems.
Unfortunately GW dropped support for Blackstone Fortress almost immediately after you posted your praise. It’s a huge mistake on their behalf as new gamers cannot get into the game now.
The Dungeon Dive Good to know because I picked up the game after watching your video now I need to pick up Cthulhu death may die game after watching this video :-) I really enjoy your channel and your content is always good can’t wait to see what you do in 2020 happy new year greetings from Minnesota

Dark Venture art/logo reminds me of old 70's sci-fi/fantasy paperbacks - so cool!
Benja yep! That’s pretty much the style of the whole game.
Thank you for all the work you put into this video. I wish you a happy new year 2020 and good luck for your game design project as well.
Enroth186 thank you!
Great video to see on my birthday! Thanks DJ!
Happy birthday, my man! Have a great day. :)
