    Thank you for showing how to string onions so fully. I vaguely remember my grandfather having onions hanging like this as a child and happened on your video which caught my eye. Your videos are so insightful! So many traditions have been lost over the years, my grandfather being the last of his family which was a very old Spanish-American family in the U.S. who was born in the later part of the 1800's, still held onto many of the traditions of the past. I love seeing how people in England and Europe still use the traditional ways for growing etc.. Just a fantastic video , I look forward to seeing more videos you have a wonderful garden.

    Some of my young teen memories was joining my neighbor, a country girl, processing a bushel of green beans, breaking off the tips and usually snapping in half or in thirds to prep for canning or freezing. Enjoyable day and early evening on a warm summer day, sipping lemonade as we worked thru the pile of beans. Fond memories. You spoke of roots called pips, but didn’t know why. Watched a lemon recipe being made and the seeds of the lemons were called pips and were removed before start of recipe. Those plants you were separating, the parts you called a pip looked exactly like the lemon seeds or pips.

    • @CastleHillGarden
      @CastleHillGarden  2 года назад

      Hi Julie, what a lovely story. The pips as you call them are the nitrogen nodules on the beans, we leave them in the grown for the next crop. Thanks for watching regards Cliff.

    Another great video Cliff. I think Diane has a lot of blanching to do lol. It's nice though to have veggies from your garden through the winter. My dad always had a garden plus my great grandad used to work at a stately home. So I guess I inherited some love for gardening. When I lived in California I had 250 orchids.i did everything by the book and no flowers so said that's it, just potted them in orchid rock, threw some fertilizer on and left them, next thing it was like Christmas. Flowers galore. Just a few in the house now. Maureen

    Just found your videos and subscribed. Love the onions and beans, Now I know how to tie off the onions too. I have to chuckle because Lily of the Valley is such an invasive plant. I made the mistake of splitting them a few years ago and now I am pulling them out in areas I do not want them in. Plant in pots like you have, if put in the ground, watch very closely every year. Thanks for the good information. Steve

      thanks Cliff it's funny of all the sites i have visited to learn things you are the only one who responded back n yes i used to do that with my grandma and she taught me all about canning and freezing n now that my hubby passed away in 2016 day after new years day i have not been able to cook for just one but i am going to do a lot of big freezer cooking and i am making my garden 2x bigger to harvest more as it's only my income now and things are really tight money wise so the puppies aren't getting the leftovers except what is left on my plate as much as they did but they still get their puppy treats n fresh veggies when i am cutting them up which they all love thanks again

    Good advice on the veg. We have wild bunnies, so we're figuring this next year those that survive the coyotes and wild cats, the rabbits don't climb well, they do burrow, to keep the critters from having lunch on your harvest, grow vines up on trellis and in large pots. We'll get a set up going to use cattle panels as hoops so the vines grow up and over.
