Thank you for that wonderful tour!! I prefer the garden that evolved over time. The brick edging that replaced perennials was the most brilliant stroke i believe. The planning and execution of the understory of redbuds which created areas of enchanting shade with light filtering through the branches is a lesson in understanding what makes a garden that people want to linger in. Like a timeless work of art, the potager garden pays homage to the history of the house. It captured the hearts of all gardeners.
I absolutely LOVED this video because it shows all the realities that we deal with as gardener's. I too have older pictures and enjoy compared them to the garden today (with the exception of seeing a prized and beloved plant that has since died). Thank you for doing this video. I still have pine cone finial envy - I know they are no longer available but they still jump out in your videos and 'speak' to me. 🌿 Wow, great job on editing, Stewart! Loved the concept of this one. Both are beautiful in their own way- what a journey from then to now. I prefer the recent evolution for a few reasons: more evergreens, less maintenance, better all-season interest, and a variety of lighting conditions that provide diversity and interest as well as a place to rest the eyes. The tree canopies, and mature specimens in your landscape really make it quite special, and intimate. I think over time you really developed the sense of English Garden for your Tutor with an Oklahoma spin!
I really enjoy and learn a great deal from all of your videos, Linda and Stewart, but I think this one is my absolute favorite. What fun to look at how your gardens have evolved, and what an inspiration to those of us who are reluctant to take chances or make changes to gardens we already love. It is also reassuring to be reminded that sometimes even changes that we don't chose can result over time in a better garden. Thank you both!

This was an exceptional video of before & after! I really enjoyed seeing the progression of your garden & your personal gardening experience. You & Stewart did a terrific job of showing the before photos & pointing out the changes in your garden. My large garden is 6 years old & I have started making major changes with plantings because of more shade in areas that originally had much more sun. Gardening is truly a growing experience & adventure. I so love it! Thank you for sharing so much of your garden & personal self with us.

I have an emotional attachment to your garden the way it is. As I've told you it saved me during the pandemic in 2020! We all change and our tastes etc evolve. We can have plans but Mother Nature has the eraser at times 😉
This may very well be one of my favorite videos. It is so eye opening how a garden changes over time, I had a tour in my garden with my fellow master gardeners. Several years later they asked for another tour. They were all surprised by the change. A garden is a living thing.

I love the canopy trees and bowers now, as I am smitten with shade gardens. I love dappled sunlight coming through, but love the intimate feel the canopy emits. Also , I am one of the ones who will forever see the black arbor into the pottage whenever I envision your garden. It made it a magical destination into another secret room.
My mother died 10 days ago. She was an avid gardener, and you, Linda, remind me so much of her when she was young and vibrant. I'm still an amateur gardener myself, but watching your videos makes me feel close to my mom in spirit, and brings back all those warm sun-drenched memories of her glorious gardens. Thank you.
Gardens evolve over time due to mother nature or personal choices. One thing I have learned about gardening is to appreciate the moment you and your garden are currently in. Much to my surprise mother nature can often outdo my best attempts at beauty quite effortlessly, such as the time when morning glory covered my whole chain link fence one year or the time I had a row of sunflowers by my back porch that when sitting inside the porch felt like you were sitting in a sunflower forest. The chipmunks will not let me duplicate this anymore either. Now I just go with the ebb and flow of each season because as I have learned sometimes no matter how hard we try to emulate our ideas in the garden sometimes no matter how hard I try they don't work out as well as imagined and looking back at photos later it's not until then while looking back I am approaching with a less critical eye. So now my current mantra is it will be beautiful no matter what season or year it is and I have to learn to just appreciate that and not compare one with the other. Linda your gardens are always beautiful. I love your peaceful garden.

I very much enjoyed this video trip down memory lane in your garden. Gardens evolve. You have lived in the same house for over 30 years; it’s only natural to experience changes. My current garden is my longest one because we moved for my husband’s job. This 12 yr. old landscape underwent a dramatic change when a tornado took out my large oak trees and my pine trees. No more shade! Adjustment required to full sun. It’s pretty darn HOT in southeastern NC, zone 8a. Your garden is lovely and peaceful, and just right for you now. Thanks for sharing it.

One of the things I love about gardening is giving myself permission to let not only the garden evolve but also myself. Seasons come and seasons go both in our gardening year and in our lives. I don't feel bad about letting a good idea go by the wayside. These garden decisions and new inspirations can live together. They seem to form the fabric of the garden's tale, which I see as a beautiful thing. I loved how your story has evolved and been edited to what we see today. It is beautiful!

Well, I had a great time today!! Our contractor has been here all day working on the installation of our kitchen...YAY! And, as a "treat" to myself, I have been "binge" watching your vlogs ALL DAY! I LOVE how you did this before and after video! I keep getting more and more tips every time I watch, which is just great since next year the REAL garden work begins! I just get so inspired!! Sometimes, we just need a day when all we do is lounge and enjoy ourselves! This was MY DAY!! The gardens looked lovely both before and now. I love your approach to the evolution of the garden to more shade and less maintenance. I totally get that and will think more about planting flowering perenials which don't look so good when spring is done and the heat of summer sets in. Sometimes it's so hot here in zone 9b that many things just stop blooming at all. I love all the lush greens making your garden so serene.
Absolutely love this video, Linda, which I've watched for a second time this evening as I gain inspiration and strength in planning some new areas (complete with baby boxwoods!) in our garden. Your potager is the inspiration for my newest garden space. It also brings me back to the garden of my childhood and I now have such a tremendous appreciation for all the work of both my mom (for cut flowers and composition) and dad (for perfectly sheered hedges and the little pond). This video and your book must make the move to the storybook cottage that much more peaceful.
It’s very helpful to hear you say that the photos are a snapshot in time, and that it didn’t always look that way. I like that it’s okay to not grow some plants, and it’s okay to pull some out.

Beautiful gardens before and after. As an older woman, I truly appreciate making the garden easier to manage. Pulling plants that are cumbersome and difficult to manage and planting more beautiful perennials that come back every year saving time, money and work effort. Great tips... thank you

The entry to the potager garden is very Feng Shui in terms of flow. I don't live by that philosophy. However when you see it so perfectly demonstrated it makes perfect sense. Classic just like you. Enjoyed before & after.
In North Carolina ear wigs have been so abundant and when you think you have them under control you find more!! It is very interesting how over time we realize things change like the areas changed from full sun to high shade or shade then we have to move the plants to give them their best life. You have taught me not to depend on perennials for color, but texture and colors of shrubs to give us that punch throughout the year. I love the garden better now as it is more classy. Loved this video Linda and Stewart, as I know it took a lot of work putting this together for us. Everything you two do is amazing to me!!
Loved this now and then tour very much. So enjoyed seeing the evolution of your garden. Gave me hope because my backyard has changed so much since I moved here in 2004. It used to be a shady green box is how I referred to it but because of storms, snow and ice plus OG&E became a bight sunny bare yard. I have been creating beds and planting things hoping to get my nice shady garden back. I have a volunteer redbud that’s looking very nice and learning that most of your’s are volunteers makes me want to just let a couple more just grow. Really helps me to learn that you have had major things die and yet other things have grown and it’s even prettier now. I just started my redo of the backyard last year so I have a long way to go. But I am thinking in about five years I’ll be very happy with it again. I already like it much more than I did last year. So it will happen! Thanks for the inspiration.

What fun to see the before and after and as a whole the garden now is my fav by far. Yes the earlier shots of prime time blooms was beautiful but the things you have changed make it an even more substantial garden that is more timeless. The brick and flagstone. The inexpensive revamp of you fence etc. etc. etc. just lovely. Thanks for taking us in this time lapse of your gardens.

Loved this video! We just bought our house a year and a half ago and the previous owner had no landscaping at all. We recently added two garden beds, a flowering tree, boxwood, lots of plants including black eyed Susan, daisies, coneflower, a veggie and herb garden. Lots of rewarding work! I loved seeing how your garden grew and changed over time. It gives inspiration to a beginner gardener like myself. 💚

Great video, thank you! I was introduced to your channel when you worked with Garden Answer and did a video on topiary. I checked out your Instagram page and have been copying your style since. I have always loved English Garden design but struggled scaling it down and making it work with my native plant/wildlife garden. You were the bridge to making that work, especially for trees and shrubs. I simply switch everything to natives. A few things you have taught me that have changed my garden for the better: NEGATIVE SPACE, up limbing trees is okay, green is a color, anything can be grown in a pot, garden entrances, line of sight and, of course, anything can become a topiary! I’d be remiss in not mentioning shopping my garden for plants and thrifting with style. Most recently, we have added a front picket fence with a side walk facing border which will be planted a bit more formally with natives, to show it can be done. We are also adding a gate to the side garden, it will have a hedge instead of a picket fence but will have the same native plant border. Thank you!

So enjoyed seeing the evolution of your garden. Love the redbuds planting themselves in the perfect spots and hearing how you decided to make the different plant decisions over the years. I used to have over 40 roses and tried roses in Colorado but they are not as vigorous in our cold. You have helped me learn how to make those decisions based on the new conditions I have. THank you!
I get it! I too pulled out 20 roses 10 years ago and planted perennials and natives. Roses are too much work and in my case they didn't fit with my rustic prairie style house in Illinois. Your previous garden was truly lovely but I totally get the gardening ease as we age.
I really enjoyed this ! I love your garden now ! The shadiness of it just absolutely woo's me !! The only thing I did absolutely love was the arbor...with or without the roses , just loved that secluded , secret garden feel . However the entrance now is beautiful also. Hello Linda.. such a great time walking through your garden reflecting on the passage of time growing your garden! There is so much to consider when planting and so much to understand about the whole concept of gardening! But I guess that's what makes gardening to interesting! I commented recently about the fact that I didn't see many roses in your garden...but I see you had plenty at one time. I too had a New Coral Dawn rose that was beautiful. The problem was, it was planted in a spot that hooked my husband every time he cut the lawn. So after quite a while I gave him permission to take it out. I think about it all the time and miss it's beauty. My husband is grateful for the ease of cutting the lawn, once again. Your tour was wonderful...loved the before and afters ❤
I loved the then and now tour! It's so fun to see how things change and evolve as you change and evolve. I'm like you, since I am older, I want less maintenance too, and am working toward that in my own garden. I'll be planting an Eastern Redbud to replace a Crape Myrtle that had something wrong with it. I've been a little hesitant, but after seeing how many you have in your backyard, I'm no longer intimidated. I have to state again how much I enjoyed your video. Thanks for sharing!

Gardens evolve over time due to mother nature or personal choices. One thing I have learned about gardening is to appreciate the moment you and your garden are currently in. Much to my surprise mother nature can often outdo my best attempts at beauty quite effortlessly, such as the time when morning glory covered my whole chain link fence one year or the time I had a row of sunflowers by my back porch that when sitting inside the porch felt like you were sitting in a sunflower forest. The chipmunks will not let me duplicate this anymore either. Now I just go with the ebb and flow of each season because as I have learned sometimes no matter how hard we try to emulate our ideas in the garden sometimes no matter how hard I try they don't work out as well as imagined and looking back at photos later it's not until then while looking back I am approaching with a less critical eye. So now my current mantra is it will be beautiful no matter what season or year it is and I have to learn to just appreciate that and not compare one with the other.

I very much enjoyed this video trip down memory lane in your garden. Gardens evolve. You have lived in the same house for over 30 years; it’s only natural to experience changes. My current garden is my longest one because we moved for my husband’s job. This 12 yr. old landscape underwent a dramatic change when a tornado took out my large oak trees and my pine trees. No more shade! Adjustment required to full sun. It’s pretty darn HOT in southeastern NC, zone 8a. Your garden is lovely and peaceful, and just right for you now. Thanks for sharing it.

One of the things I love about gardening is giving myself permission to let not only the garden evolve but also myself. Seasons come and seasons go both in our gardening year and in our lives. I don't feel bad about letting a good idea go by the wayside. These garden decisions and new inspirations can live together. They seem to form the fabric of the garden's tale, which I see as a beautiful thing. I loved how your story has evolved and been edited to what we see today. It is beautiful!

Well, I had a great time today!! Our contractor has been here all day working on the installation of our kitchen...YAY! And, as a "treat" to myself, I have been "binge" watching your vlogs ALL DAY! I LOVE how you did this before and after video! I keep getting more and more tips every time I watch, which is just great since next year the REAL garden work begins! I just get so inspired!! Sometimes, we just need a day when all we do is lounge and enjoy ourselves! This was MY DAY!! The gardens looked lovely both before and now. I love your approach to the evolution of the garden to more shade and less maintenance. I totally get that and will think more about planting flowering perenials which don't look so good when spring is done and the heat of summer sets in. Sometimes it's so hot here in zone 9b that many things just stop blooming at all. I love all the lush greens making your garden so serene.
Absolutely love this video, Linda, which I've watched for a second time this evening as I gain inspiration and strength in planning some new areas (complete with baby boxwoods!) in our garden. Your potager is the inspiration for my newest garden space. It also brings me back to the garden of my childhood and I now have such a tremendous appreciation for all the work of both my mom (for cut flowers and composition) and dad (for perfectly sheered hedges and the little pond). This video and your book must make the move to the storybook cottage that much more peaceful.
It’s very helpful to hear you say that the photos are a snapshot in time, and that it didn’t always look that way. I like that it’s okay to not grow some plants, and it’s okay to pull some out.

Beautiful gardens before and after. As an older woman, I truly appreciate making the garden easier to manage. Pulling plants that are cumbersome and difficult to manage and planting more beautiful perennials that come back every year saving time, money and work effort. Great tips... thank you

The entry to the potager garden is very Feng Shui in terms of flow. I don't live by that philosophy. However when you see it so perfectly demonstrated it makes perfect sense. Classic just like you. Enjoyed before & after.

In North Carolina ear wigs have been so abundant and when you think you have them under control you find more!! It is very interesting how over time we realize things change like the areas changed from full sun to high shade or shade then we have to move the plants to give them their best life. You have taught me not to depend on perennials for color, but texture and colors of shrubs to give us that punch throughout the year. I love the garden better now as it is more classy. Loved this video Linda and Stewart, as I know it took a lot of work putting this together for us. Everything you two do is amazing to me!!

Loved this now and then tour very much. So enjoyed seeing the evolution of your garden. Gave me hope because my backyard has changed so much since I moved here in 2004. It used to be a shady green box is how I referred to it but because of storms, snow and ice plus OG&E became a bight sunny bare yard. I have been creating beds and planting things hoping to get my nice shady garden back. I have a volunteer redbud that’s looking very nice and learning that most of your’s are volunteers makes me want to just let a couple more just grow. Really helps me to learn that you have had major things die and yet other things have grown and it’s even prettier now. I just started my redo of the backyard last year so I have a long way to go. But I am thinking in about five years I’ll be very happy with it again. I already like it much more than I did last year. So it will happen! Thanks for the inspiration.

What fun to see the before and after and as a whole the garden now is my fav by far. Yes the earlier shots of prime time blooms was beautiful but the things you have changed make it an even more substantial garden that is more timeless. The brick and flagstone. The inexpensive revamp of you fence etc. etc. etc. just lovely. Thanks for taking us in this time lapse of your gardens.

Loved this video! We just bought our house a year and a half ago and the previous owner had no landscaping at all. We recently added two garden beds, a flowering tree, boxwood, lots of plants including black eyed Susan, daisies, coneflower, a veggie and herb garden. Lots of rewarding work! I loved seeing how your garden grew and changed over time. It gives inspiration to a beginner gardener like myself. 💚

I was introduced to your channel when you worked with Garden Answer and did a video on topiary. I checked out your Instagram page and have been copying your style since.
I have always loved English Garden design but struggled scaling it down and making it work with my native plant/wildlife garden. You were the bridge to making that work, especially for trees and shrubs. I simply switch everything to natives.
A few things you have taught me that have changed my garden for the better: NEGATIVE SPACE, up limbing trees is okay, green is a color, anything can be grown in a pot, garden entrances, line of sight and, of course, anything can become a topiary! I’d be remiss in not mentioning shopping my garden for plants and thrifting with style.
Most recently, we have added a front picket fence with a side walk facing border which will be planted a bit more formally with natives, to show it can be done. We are also adding a gate to the side garden, it will have a hedge instead of a picket fence but will have the same native plant border.

I used to have over 40 roses and tried roses in Colorado but they are not as vigorous in our cold. You have helped me learn how to make those decisions based on the new conditions I have. THank you!
I get it! I too pulled out 20 roses 10 years ago and planted perennials and natives. Roses are too much work and in my case they didn't fit with my rustic prairie style house in Illinois. Your previous garden was truly lovely but I totally get the gardening ease as we age.
I really enjoyed this ! I love your garden now ! The shadiness of it just absolutely woo's me !! The only thing I did absolutely love was the arbor...with or without the roses , just loved that secluded , secret garden feel . However the entrance now is beautiful also. Hello Linda.. such a great time walking through your garden reflecting on the passage of time growing your garden! There is so much to consider when planting and so much to understand about the whole concept of gardening! But I guess that's what makes gardening to interesting! I commented recently about the fact that I didn't see many roses in your garden...but I see you had plenty at one time. I too had a New Coral Dawn rose that was beautiful. The problem was, it was planted in a spot that hooked my husband every time he cut the lawn. So after quite a while I gave him permission to take it out. I think about it all the time and miss it's beauty. My husband is grateful for the ease of cutting the lawn, once again. Your tour was wonderful...loved the before and afters ❤

I loved the then and now tour! It's so fun to see how things change and evolve as you change and evolve. I'm like you, since I am older, I want less maintenance too, and am working toward that in my own garden. I'll be planting an Eastern Redbud to replace a Crape Myrtle that had something wrong with it. I've been a little hesitant, but after seeing how many you have in your backyard, I'm no longer intimidated. I have to state again how much I enjoyed your video. Thanks for sharing!
