    I couldn't agree more with what he said about punk. I've been listening to punk my entire life, but you just can't listen to it ALL the time. As I got older, I learned to use it when I need it.

      My music library is equally divided between Punk Rock and Classical Music, so yes I know what you mean. There is a time to crank up the Punk and there is a time to calming your mind with Classical. I divide my time perfectly well alternating with both.

      Suburbia is awesome. I remember when we first got cable tv in the early 1980s Suburbia was on a lot, blew me away as well. 20 or so years later when Netflix first came out they had it on DVD. This was back when they would actually send you a copy of the DVD in the mail, you watch it then send it back. I was able to burn a copy and still have it. Going to gave to watch it this weekend.

    I actually had the pleasure of meeting Jack during the Vans warped tour in 2017 and he was such an honest nice guy, especially to a T.S.O.L fanboy like myself. After getting an autograph and before the pictures (and since there was no line to really meet him and they don't charge to meet) I actually asked him if he could call my dad and say hi and he said "Hell yes call him up" and said i was a wonderful kid and told him thank you for being a fan for so many years and getting me into the band. let's just say my dad fangirled harder then I did meeting him in person lmao.

    • @vinylrichie007
      @vinylrichie007 7 лет назад +5

      NYC gets a lot of attention because punk blew up there first. By 79 LA and London had the biggest Punk scenes. LA really blew up from 80 on. English Punk bands were blown away by the size of the crowds at the Olympic Auditorium shows. Its seems today Germany may have the best Punk scene.

    • @hiphoprbloverjon9180
      @hiphoprbloverjon9180 7 лет назад +2

      Vinyl Richie LA has origins on what they call ''Proto Punk'' before the rest of the Punk movement later on. Bands like The Doors, Love, The Seeds, and even Captain Beefheart are always credited on influence. The Ramones get all the credit but to me they were more of a Pop band. They made anthems that got played at sporting events and were even in movies. The Sex Pistols at least kept it dirty. Then LA/OC came along and kept it that way with the Hardcore movement.

    • @vinylrichie007
      @vinylrichie007 7 лет назад +9

      You can really hear pop influences in the Ramones songs but it doesn't change the fact of how jarring that first album was.

And I couldn't agree more: I love Hardcore Punk Rock, but I couldn't listen to it all the time. At home I mostly listen to Jazz, Soul, Dub and Ambient Electronics.

  • @brandonhendrix7223
    @brandonhendrix7223 7 лет назад +16

    This points out something I've always tried to stress in why older punk appeals to me way more than modern punk: the original punks actually predate the whole concept so they were all listening to different stuff prior to that (e.g.--Greg Ginn was a Grateful Dead fan, Pat Smear liked Yes, Brett and Greg from BR like psych/prog-type stuff) so while the punk stuff was a major influence, so was the stuff they were listening to prior. So while TSOL were pounding out Superficial Love, the ghost of soul and The Beatles were running through them (not that you can detect it but it's there regardless.)
    Whereas most later hardcore and modern punk bands only ever listened to punk, so it sounds more generic and stale to me.
    For example, when The Descendents played pop-punk it was their attempt to cross McCartney and Ginn. When NOFX play it, they're simply imitating The Descendents. When a more modern plays it, they're imitating nofx imitating the descendents. See what I'm getting at?
    Oh, yeah, Jack's (normally I'd use his last name but in grand TSOL tradition, I don't know which one to use! Ha!) picks are top notch. And no surprise he picked a Damned album as TSOL worshipped and patterned themselves after them.

    • @ptcrusa
      @ptcrusa 6 лет назад +3

      So true. People need a diverse set of influences for their music to stay fresh. It was a problem even in the mid 80s, in New York for example, a bunch of bands made up of people who grew up at CBGBs listening to only one kind of music going on to form a band with the express purpose of sounding like the Bad Brains or Negative Approach, and then later the Cro Mags. In fact, modern hardcore is still stuck in the "let's all sound like the Cro Mags" phase, there has been almost no evolution.

      This comment needs more likes. This is exactly what I've been saying, the scene is simply dull now because it's almost as if it's all been done, and not to mention it seems that it's more of a fashion statement to be punk or hardcore

    I love it when Jack is discussing his genuine and very heartfelt...even passionate admiration of Machine Gun Etiquette and Who's Next...it's totally a very real, and very deep (part of his DNA). He's a great fan of the music, art, writing and film that has moved/inspired him to create his own work...with very high standards and, without being afraid to take the seemingly unpopular and/or possibly disastrous road. Just like the Damned and the Who have been at key stages in their evolution.

    • @dougsmith7083

      Jack never sound pretentious...because he is not going to let himself be played by the camera...he's courageous and he doesn't give a fuck about his "image" or, if he comes across as "cool" etc...He has never been someone to take the "easy" path...TSOL followed their own way and, didn't give a rat's ass about the popular vote...and, they made music that coloured so far outside of the punk rock lines that it alienated them from the "hardcore scene" but...it was music that was daring, complex, dark, gothic...Jack (and, Ron, Mike, Todd and Greg) played the music that they wanted to play...and, 40yrs down the road - perhaps their audience has caught up with them.

    Jack is an interesting person. He plays all sides of the coin convincingly, but he’s generally honest and introspective about whatever past mistakes he’s made, too. Which were quite a number, if you didn’t know. Like the rest of us.

    I met him outside of Monaco Bob's in Nola when he was touring for Joykiller, I was slurring on Night Train and he was still cool enough to talk to me out there.

      Great record but best record is definitely subjective. Black Flag Damaged, Rancid out come the wolves, US Bombs War Birth, Sex Pistols Nevermind the bollocks, Ramones self titled, etc could all be the best punk album. Very hard to say an album is the best.

      Yes, "Beneath the Shadows" is one of, if not my favorite album of all time. The band painted this very imaginative audioscape, so much so, that I can honestly say I've never heard another album like it and got that, "Disappear" and the compilation of the Posh Boy EP and "Weathered Statues" for 10 bucks from Nitro Records back in 2001. I still TO THIS DAY have the DISAPPEAR/REAPPEAR double sided promo poster gracing my wall, with the "Beneath the Shadows" side showing. That album is one of the best albums EVER made. Not to mention I own "An American Demon" both on hard copy and audible... That is one FUCKED UP book, only for people that really like the dark side of life, but it's still a great read. It's even better when Jack reads it to you.
