Something very interesting... Champion year: Retirement year: Jeff Gordon 2001 2015 Tony Stewart 2002 2016 Matt Kenseth 2003 2017 Kurt Busch 2004 2018? The trend shall continue!
he's sort of a bland personality unfortunately. in recent years, he's seemed more lively but really most of his career, he was just there. not disagreeing with being a good driver though.
Their careers are so similar statistically. They started in NASCAR at the same time and now fittingly they will both step away at the same time. It's also fitting that Junior will get almost all of the fanfare, as he has throughout his career over Matt. Seeing Matt's personality and specifically his humbleness I believe Matt is fine with that. Compare their stats though, besides Matt being champion in '03 they're very similar. Both 2-time Daytona winners, starts (631 vs 651 - would have been closer had Junior not missed part of '16 season). Cup series won't be the same without them.
I was never a Kenseth fan per se, but I always respected him as a driver. I have to admit, I got a bit emotional seeing him win at Phoenix. I’m going to miss him.
2015 Jeff Gordon 2016 Tony Stewart 2017 Dale Jr Matt Kenseth maybe Only OGs left are Jimmie Johnson, Kevin Harvick, Ryan Newman, and Kurt Busch before the 2004 season.
Him and Jr's careers are so ironically intertwined it's crazy. Came into NASCAR the same time, went to Cup together, retire together. Crazy how that works
I know the guy that drove the 17 before Kenseth drove it. Tim Bender. Set the track record at Atlanta on a pole qualifying run and then at Bristol he was injured and never raced NASCAR again.
It is odd how Jr & Kenseth kind of mirrored each other in their career. Popping up in the Busch Series for 1 race in 96, more in 97 & full time in 98 & 99, then runs for Rookie of the Year in Cup in 2000 & both winning at least a race that season. They never ran a Truck race & now both retire (or at least step away) from Cup racing at the end of 2017.
I’m still annoyed/pissed off about marntinsville and how he fucked Joey over I don’t feel bad for him he brought all this on himself but I’ll give him his credit where credit is dew he’s one hell of a good driver and I’d vote him into the HOF
DW didn't own that Busch car. His first cup crew chief owned it and was driver until he hired Tim Bender. Matt replaced bender after an injury Bender had.
Something very interesting...

Jeff Gordon 2001 2015

Gemini Man Johnson can’t retire in 2029. He has a contract until 2020
Kevin Harvick confirmed as the next Harry Gant
Gemini Man

He will retire soon too
Clark McKee he didn’t win in 2011, it was in 2013
Kenseth is one of those guys I felt doesn't get the credit he deserves. He was a heck of a driver.
he's sort of a bland personality unfortunately. in recent years, he's seemed more lively but really most of his career, he was just there. not disagreeing with being a good driver though.
His dry sense of humor is top notch.
"If you don't think Matt is funny, you have a sense of humor." - Robbie Reiser
ASCA League all fucking drivers are bland with the exception of Clint Bowyer.
@@b.d.cooper8671 He won the 2003 championship
Its truly ridiculous that he is essentially being forced to retire he still has a lot left in him.

😢😢😢😢 crying after homestead Matt Kenseth and Dale Earnhardt Jr Are Gone
Milton Butler hasn't happened yet
2015 Jeff Gordon
2016 Tony Stewart
2017 Dale Jr Matt Kenseth maybe
Only OGs left are Jimmie Johnson, Kevin Harvick, Ryan Newman, and Kurt Busch before the 2004 season.
Glad Jr. will be gone.
Kenseth is only out for the 2018 season he may come back in 2019
I'm glad Matt Kenseth got one more win before the end of the 2017 season.
Him and Jr's careers are so ironically intertwined it's crazy. Came into NASCAR the same time, went to Cup together, retire together. Crazy how that works
Kenseth finished 6th in his debut. As far as I'm aware since then only Carl Edwards has recorded a top 10 in their debut (and it was a 10th.)
Kyle Busch finished 9th in his first ever NASCAR race in 2001 at Indianapolis Raceway Park. However, it was at the age of 16!
Denny Hamlin also finished 8th in his first busch series start
Matt Kenseth replaced snowboarder Tim Bender who injured himself and then he became the full time driver and the rest they say is history.
Hall of fame snowmobile racer Tim Bender actually. He somehow set the track record at Atlanta in 1997 but never finished well in his time in Busch.
Crazy that both Matt and Jr are friends and both came into cup the same year and are both leaving the same year.
Just wish Matt could have left by his own will..instead of basically being forced to retire.
agree and rip steve
drakionclawers Same. Jr, technically, too. Yeah, he made the choice, but if his brain were in better shape I'm sure he'd still be racing next year
Ryan Walker and xfinity the same years
Wrong. Matt Kenseth's most recent start is in Homestead 2018.
I know the guy that drove the 17 before Kenseth drove it. Tim Bender. Set the track record at Atlanta on a pole qualifying run and then at Bristol he was injured and never raced NASCAR again.
He might have been a champ imo.
I was hoping Kenseth would be the next Harry Gant.
Glad to see this series is back!

First Edwards , Now Kenseth , something tells me things aren't right at the Gibbs organization.....
Gordon and Jr are both gonna be retired after Homestead, both at Hendrick. Your point?
Gibbs has a bunch of young drivers coming up, the old guys just have to go sadly.
Too many good drivers and limited with rides both there and at Furniture Row.
Gordon is already retired.
Whoa, who knew matt and Jr had very similiar carrers
Freeze frame startled me lol
Sad that people only care about Dale Jr's retirement while Kenseth definitely deserves more attention for this probable last season
These videos make me sad remembering how good NASCAR used to be and what it has become today. Maybe I'm just getting old. GET OFF MY LAWN!
Rusty Wallace will really miss saying Matt Kensissssss.
Ahahah - so true!
0:43 Nazareth?

Did he replace Darrel Waltrip?
DW didn't own that Busch car. His first cup crew chief owned it and was driver until he hired Tim Bender. Matt replaced bender after an injury Bender had.
Robbie Reiser owned the car.
