Getting Rid of My Phone for 68 Days! (watch for the surprise)
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 3 окт 2024
- Last year I'd had enough of my mobile phone and social media.
I wanted a digital and dopamine detox, so I put my phone in a box and sent it to Australia.
What happened was incredible!

Notes about this video:
1. Because I use RUclips to research video ideas, during this experiment I set a 15-minute limit (switches the website off automatically after that time) to RUclips on my laptop. Before I'd spent too much time watching other people's videos which became destructive rather than constructive.
2. I did this during the lockdown which made this far easier than being in ‘normal’ life
3. I moved out of London for one month to live with my mum in the countryside - that was a far more beneficial environment to do this experiment. 13 months later, I’m still here 😜
4. So I do not miss urgent or emergency calls from family and close friends, I have added a setting to my phone meaning it will ring even when it’s on silent, including the ‘do not disturb' setting.
Well, Congratulations Laura!!! This is such an important topic to explore and share. I LOVE your humanity and trust in your phone's host family. Both creative and daring! Keep up the great work.
Hello Laura. How do you switch off youtube after 15-minute automatically ? Can you give me just a small hint where to find the procedure ? Love your projects. Peter from France.
Hey Peter, there is a time limit on apple computers (perhaps on others too). Go to system pretences --> screen time --> app limits, there you can set a time limit on certain websites. The only down side is it’s easy to override and cancel the limit, however, it’s a physical reminder.
I’m sure there are official app and website blockers available also.
@@LauraTryUK thank you Laura. Very nice of you. Will use it on the mac. Expecting your next challenge..
Question: What camera did you use to record your videos?
This was so much fun to be a part of Laura! If anyone else wants to send me their phones get in touch, I promise I’ll send them back!
Ailsa, you are THE BEST! This could become an actual thing 😂
You are incredible!
Thought was great! Idea!😁👍💖
Loved the pictures you made with the phone lounging in a little chair and checking out the sites - so creative and fun to watch!
It was so nice of you to send her a postcard, take the phone on field trips complete with pictures and send it back with a gift and a letter, wow!
I adore the fact that the vetting process to find someone who can hold on to the phone ended with the confirmation of dog ownership! Fact: dog people are lovely 🥰 Thank you Ailsa!
Haha, we are! Thanks! ❤️😍🐶❤️😍🐶
@@ailsamyforeverdog6587I am from France. I just watched LT's video. And the way you travelled this phone all around the sights of your hometown remembered me of the film "Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain" (The fabulous destiny of Amélie Poulain). I don't know if you know this french film. But it was such a good idea what you made with this phone. Great to see the experiment of trust Laura and you were part of.
Thank you for sharing this.
You have to look at the individual pet owner and also the type of dog. All pet owners are _individuals_ (not all are the same) . Thank you
Before phones even, I would constantly have a book with me. It's a form of keeping myself entertained still, and fill that void. Occasionally, I think I would much rather go back to that than Instagram or Tiktok, so I still make sure to always keep a book with me. Another fantastic share, LT. 🔥
I'm loving that you carry a book with you. I do the same also now.
I love that you deemed her worthy because she has two elderly, fat and happy dogs. That's awesome!
I’m so happy you made this video, I feel like the smart phone is the equivalent to cocaine lol the addiction is crazy!
Haha your phone is like the traveling gnome in Amélie Poulain. Ailsa is a hoot! ❤
I often forget my phone home or don't know where it is in the house, or the battery dies. I barely use it. Only to keep in touch with a s,all handful of people dear to me via Messenger (he travels around a lot and has no phone number), and mostly film with it. 💜I watch a lot of RUclips, but on the computer I find it hard to appreciate the details and cinematography of videos on a small phone screen.
I see two stories here. The first is about the detox and rehab from dopamine, as you said. The other is to live as you really want, not as you are supposed to by society. Bravo!
Can I just say your relationship to your mom seems sooo lovely, I wish everyone had that
It really is lovely. And it got better since this experiment also. Total dream 💫
Thank you for this video. I won't be posting my phone to UK (I'm in Australia) but your experiment has helped me admit that my phone use has become problematic (which I kind of knew but have been ignoring). Now to make changes.
Laura! This was such a fun video to watch! When you were opening your parcel with your phone in it, I actually had tears in my eyes, imagine that! Ailsa sending you a postcard, the T-Shirt, key ring and photos of the Phone’s outstandings made it so extra special! What a lovely thing to do! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I’m giving this video 10/10! I’m going to watch it again now, without crying 😃
Well done Laura! 🌸👏🏼🌸👏🏼
Ailsa is THE BEST! All that kindness and effort she went to. Fills me heart so much! 💖
Love your comments, thank you 😍
It’s more than just an addiction, those who design these things have made sure that they are necessary in order for us to live a significant part of our lives. Shopping, traveling, many forms of entertainment, education, communication etc. all depend on an electronic device. When I was a kid this was all the promise of the future, now that it’s here I’m not sure how I feel about it. One things for sure, they sure slipped into our lives in a very clever way. Oh well you can’t say they didn’t warn us.
I have no idea why you think "shopping, traveling, many forms of entertainment, education, communication etc. all depend on an electronic device" when they don't. Maybe you just value the convenience of accessing this stuff via an electronic device?
Awesome, awesome video! I don’t like social media, but I am guilty of spending too much time on You tube. Time to detox! By the way, the color yellow looks great on you, Laura! Thank you!
Loved this Laura. I've been away from social media since mid October and don't plan to go back on until Jan. It was crazy how much fomo went through my head before I gave it up haha. Thank you for sharing this, it was such a fun watch.
Great video Big T. I have a real love/hate relationship with my phone. I deleted my social media app (I was only on Instagram) about a month ago and don't regret it in the slightest.
I hate how my phone keeps drawing me back to it and I check it for no good reason. I have it on silent and have minimal apps on it, but yet I still check!
But I love the tools on it. Metronome. Drum learning app. My Japanese language flashcards, my music streaming app etc.
Phones can be such a useful tool if used well, but you really have to have will power and fight their addictive design.
I loved your experiment, thanks for sharing your long term reflections.
You picked a good host for your phone. I smiled through this whole video.
Such a great host!
I was very very fortunate to have Ailsa see that Instagram story that day 🇦🇺
Wow this is insane and amazing!!! 🙌
The lady from Australia was so nice!! 😁
Alisa is the loveliest!! 💝💝💝💖💖💖🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
@@LauraTryUK You are pretty special yourself 😊
I’ve gotta try this 💪🏽
You actually going to? 🇦🇺
Ailsa made this challenge so much more fun! Love her💚 Good job Laura!
She really did! All the stuff she did was a complete surprise. Love her!
Brilliant video.
Yes - time And energy are both limited.
Keep sharing
Very inspirational! Always think of some detoxing and then never really do it. But I should, thanks for reminding of the head speace and the time that's lost on my phone. Xoxo
I hope you get to do it if only for a short time xx
Post office lady: "What's in it?"
Me: "Stuff. And it is illegal for you to ask. If you really need to, write 'consumer electronics' on the package."
:D :D
Thank you for this video Laura. I really struggle with RUclips. It's distracts me from so much else that I could do, need to do, and would like to do. However I am grateful I found your channel.
I am definitely contemplating doing a version of this.
Hey Wayne, I am pleased you enjoyed this video and found value in it.
There are options to have time limits of app on a laptop. Not a perfect option but a reminder for digital consumption.
If you have an Apple computer, check out the thread in the pinned comment.
You can do it and you will feel great too 👊
Hi there! I'm totally new to your channel and just wanted to say that I love your videos. I found your barefoot shoes video while looking up info on the subject. I'm so glad I found your channel! Thank you for being you and sharing that with us on the internet. You're inspiring!
Hey Michaella, thanks for the comment. I am pleased you like the videos 😀
Thank you so much for taking us on that journey with you. It is literally shocking how much time we spent on a phone each year! 2.5 months is crazy and unnerving. I know I spend well too much time on it as well. This video enforced my view on it and I will try to cut back on screen time.
I admire the way you don't do things by half! Well done!
Thank you Colin.
Enjoyed the video. Was like Christmas all over again.
Fantastic! Thank you 🙏🏼🌸💕
I love your videos! I'm actually doing a 5 day fast because of you :) Really needed to switch from those male American productivity gurus to something that's less biased and more _real_. Thank you!
Hey Bogdan - this comment makes me 😁, thank you x
Ahh I can't wait to do this! I'm already quite strict with minimising my phone usage but still not enough. I find my relationship with my phone and social media quite toxic! I think now is the time to try something similar 😬
Brilliant. I can't think of much else ti say. So many things on that long list at the end are things I want. Thank you LT 😊💓
The most powerful challenge/experiment I have done to date!
Your videos are so well made! I’m really curious to try something similar to this now.
Thank you so much! This one took as long time so appreciating your comment a lot!
Defo give it a try - very powerful stuff!
I love this channel.
Also, that Australian lady's photos were too funny.
Ailsa sending those pictures was just THE BEST!!!!!!! what an absolute star!!! 🤩
Great experiment, great watch 🙂👍.
Cheers
Rick
I agree with you on the phone but I think my favorite part is that you sent your phone to Australia and that’s perfect stranger not only was so kind but went around town and took photos of a totally different country for you that is so amazing I love that idea of two people that don’t know each other doing the right thing
This was the best "i quit social media" video ive ever seen
Wow. I’m SO inspired. This video came at just the right time for me. 🙏🙏🙏 I’ve got to try this - minus the Australia part. I loved this video and the two before it, your work is informative and extremely well-done!
Your fan,
Barbrie
Feel free to send it to me in Australia if you do change your mind! I live in Newcastle, NSW. To be real though, this does seem like an amazing experiment. Unfortunately as a teacher during COVID I am required to be online nearly all the time.
Brilliant! Am so emotional 😭, got to detach its just a phone.😂
I love this. So unpretentious and imaginative. Thank you
Loved the video.
Another amazing video. I've just deleted all social media apps from my phone. That list of benefits is unreal. Has given me real food for thought. Thanks so much LT x
Go Nina. Keep us all posted how you get on in a few weeks 👊
Awesome! I’ll take onboard your recommendations.
Thank you. That was very inspirational. I loved your conclusions and I guess, I have to think a bit the next days and change some things.
I'm pleased you liked this Sabine 🙏🏼
This video was epic LT! If anyone on here wants to send their phone to Australia I’ll happy to be a custodian ❤️from🇦🇺
LOVE THIS SO MUCH! 🇦🇺
What a fantastic experiment!
You're amazing. I can do this !
As usual, thanks, Laura for the inspiration! I'm going right now to set up app limits on my iPhone.
So glad I stumbled upon your channel this morning☀️
It's great to have you here Amanda 🙏🏼
Always interesting.. Always inspiring. I found your channel a couple of months ago by accident following 4 of your challenges has improved the quality of my life no end. Thanks for all the effort you put in. 👍
This comment is everything, thank you Iain 🙏🏼 🙌🏼
Me too 😊. I too spend far too much time on my phone, not on social media but as you say, looking at other people's videos on RUclips. I watch them for educational purposes but I'm starting to get very addicted. I am really happy to have found you though Laura 😊😊
Absolutely loved this…thank you 😊
Very interesting indeed! I don't think it's something I really feel the need to do in such an extreme sence, however, I would definitely think about leaving my phone at home to go away on holiday, especially camping or something in the UK. Not so much abroad unfortunately incase you need to verify things with your phone. But definitely a break from it I think would be awsome 😀
Thanks for another great video xxx
I’m pleased you liked the video Tia, and thanks for commenting 🙏🏻
absolutely love this channel
Love the Alex Gray art on home screen 🤍
aha, is that who it is? I have that Home Screen for so many years now.
I had made a similar challenge and I experience better sleep and more vivid dreams. I dreamed a lot more often.
Thanks Laura for the video. I just shared your video with my friends, who like myself, are glued to the “evil device” all day - for work, entertainment and most of all as time fillers.
P.S. Love your iPhone’s holiday pictures. Kudos to Ailsa for bringing it to all the local tourist attractions 😄
I really enjoy your videos, They always make me think and question what I am doing, and inspire me to try new things. Love your positive energy.
Thank you!
Thank you!
I love that your phone went on holiday 🤣🤣🤣 Maybe it really needed a break from its heavy schedule 😂😂
this was a fun video, you look so happy :)
This is inspiring. You went all the way with it, not half hearted. I've completely stopped using fb for a year now, except I still have my phone for work reasons, and I can attest some of benefits you've listed are very true!
Nice, I gave up Facebook and Instagram last January. My plan is for 12 months, and I've decided at this point to not go back. My world got quieter, which has been nice.
ooooo, I like the phrase, "my world got quieter" - can totally relate!
Amazing experience! Thank you for sharing! You made some pretty awesome friend in Australia. :) I study Chinese on my walks :) So have no intention to get rid of my phone.
I love that you are studying and walking 👍👍👍
Cracking experiment with great results! Great vid as usual - looking forward to more adventures. Clive x
Hey Clive, thank you so much, appreciate it 🙏🏼
Great video! Watched a few now and you are doing a great job! Congrats on the experiment
That was awesome! 🍾👏🏾
Thanks Sonté 🙏🏻
You’re welcome! I have thought about doing this before but your video was so convincing. I have to do this. Thank you 🙌🏾
Another great video. I'm so impressed by your commitment to all your challenges and how much effort goes into all of your videos. Great source of information (and inspiration!)!
Thanks Atlas 🙏🏼
Love it !!!! As with many of your videos, it’s not the content although thats great, it’s the delivery and the humanity
🌷 Hi Laura. What an amazing testimonial of giving up your mobile phone for over 2 months ! - 2 years ago, I became quite concerned that my use of technology was possibly becoming an addiction, so I began having a ' Random Technology Free Day ', without planning it in advance, and also never telling anyone when I was doing it. It used to drive my
Stepdad crazy, but it was also very therapeutic and healthy for me.
Unfortunately, during the lockdowns, I stopped doing it completely, and I now regularly use my phone for 5+ hours a day. Thank you for reminding us all what's really important in life, and for reminding me personally that there are many benefits to setting new boundaries in our personal and professional lives.
Perhaps you could try a ' Technology Free Day ' for yourself sometime ?
Anyway, thanks so much for this. You continue to inspire me personally to grow and challenge myself in new and creative ways that promote better health and wellbeing.
Tim, this is such a wonderful comment and thanks for sharing your story and for reminding me that I would benefit from a technology free day myself. Sunday is meant to be tech free but it rarely happens, so inspired by you I will begin next weekend 🙌🏼
@@LauraTryUK Thanks, Laura. I feel humbled and honoured by your comment. I can also see the difference that your 7 day fast has had on you physically, because it shows on your face, so congratulations on achieving that. You look better than ever ! - I believe we all have something valuable to share with each other, even people like myself, who don't have a single video on their RUclips channel. 🌷
Greetings from Greece!!
Great video Laura 👌
Cheers dude 👊
I feel like I was born in the wrong time. I only average about 1.5 hours per day looking at my phone, and it still feels like too much. I'm at the point where I just want to cut it all off
I did calculations for myself and I spend about 4 months, 1/3rd of my year on my IPad! Which doesn’t count my computer or tv time. I feel like I’ve been having a lot of revelations lately and I want to start living my life. I’m saying this even though I’m losing sleep once again watching RUclips although I have a day with my family planned starting early tomorrow; god this addiction really is much. Gonna do the things I want to do though! Im ready for it now!
This was very inspiring!!! Loved the video!!
I'm pleased you like it, thank you!
Do a video talking about the impact of different music bands from Bristol
Great vid, love the channel.
The older I get the more I want to throw my mobile phone under a bus. Social media and my phone leave me feeling increasingly disconnected from life.
Other than watching RUclips vids (which I spend way too much time on) I've ditched other Social media platforms.
The only reason I still have my mobile is because I feel forced too by modern life.
I currently only turn my phone on for a max of 1 hour a day.
And even that feels too much.
This was awesome!!!
I'm pleased you liked it Tracy 🙏🏼
Very insightful video. Thank you :)
Interesting experiment Laura. I noticed Dave Rubin did a whole month in August in which he went completely dark - no phone or Internet or even newspapers etc at all, no knowledge of events in the outside world (I think he went to some remote house on the coast of Mexico to escape). It was interesting to watch him catching up with what had happened after the month was over. That would be one difficult detox challenge.
Great video!
Deleted social media and news apps long ago, still don’t miss them ;)
it's just the best isn't it!
Giving up social media would be a great benefit! Unfortunately my phone is so integrated into my work it would be impossible.
Great experiment LT 👍🏻
Hey Rob, would you consider getting a work phone to separate work and personal mobile phone usage?
@@LauraTryUK I turned down a work phone as I didn’t want to be carrying around 2 phones! I think for me deleting social media would the best thing I could do as I hardly use my phone for personal phone calls, I seem to have swapped one addiction for another!
LT, this is awesome. Thanks for sharing!
cheers Jay 👊
Simply beautiful 😍
I'm off line for years, I don't need it, I live on a farm and love being outside. I'm on today because it's raining and I'm sore. lol
Thanks for sharing this experiment and what you experienced and learned from it! And man 'o man, your cell phone got to see some cool places! It went on 'holiday'. And it even brought you back a t-shirt! :-). I really enjoyed watching this and all that you shared, including the wonderful woman who took your phone to see the sights and made sure you received a post card, too! Cheers, from Canada
Hey Deanna, the phone had the best time ah!? I was a little bit envious 😂
Love this Laura, well done and so much to learn from your experiment. ❤️
Holy Moly!!! 2 months!! That's just amazing! Well done you! You're so honest and open and have completely inspired me to do this!!! Thank you x
Thank you, I'm for sure addicted, and feel stressed from my phones apps.
Again great video and I always love to see your subscriber number going up
cheers Brock 👊
your vids are so effin awesome, ty
Haha love this and this is something I definitely need to experiment with.
It was a powerful experiment for sure! Still reaping the benefits now!
@@LauraTryUK I love it that you sent your expensive phone to a complete stranger in Australia so brave but your phone had a great holiday so all turned out well!
Thanks for the idea Laura!!! This is awesome and brave! Would love to do the same thing with my mobile phone!
Hair and makeup looks great Laura
hahaha, thanks Ally, I got all dressed up for this one 😉
@@LauraTryUK 😁👍
I just feel bored and lonely with too much time on my hands without it.
This is hard in this age for businesses. You feel like you have to use every avenue possible for exposure but then you just stay on without realizing. Like I am right now with these videos lol
Loved this! Made me think about my phone usage. Great production and awesome screen presence x
I am pleased you enjoyed this Lee. Thanks for the lovely comment 🙌🏼
You are so inspiring! Thanks for the video 😃
I work with and repair computers for a living, but I'm happy to say I've never own a mobile phone and hopefully never will ;)
Great video and huge gratz on 35k subs….35k already!! You had less than 5k when I subbed a few months ago it seems..well done Laura ☺️👍
I know for sure this would help me great spending way to much time on computer great video
