Was King's Quest 8 Better than it's Reputation?

  • I always felt that King's Quest 8 - Mask of Eternity got a bad rap in most game reviews. Being published in 1998 and thus as one of the earliest 3D adventure games, this title surely suffered from a variety of problems that were quite common for that time. Among other aspects, reviewers criticized Mask of Eternity for its bad controls, nerve-wracking camera movement and focus on combat instead of solving puzzles. However, since I had always been rather fond of this game, I wanted to examine whether I was simply blinded by nostalgia or King's Quest 8 wasn't actually that bad. So, I sat down and recorded a video which you can see here.

I do give Sierra and RW credit for recognizing the changing landscape so early and trying to adapt even if they were ultimately ill-equipped and unsuccessful. In retrospect, it was a huge transitional time in gaming with stuff like 3d engines, the rise of consoles and the decline in popularity of the traditional 90s adventure game. It was exciting at the time but looking back, it's also a little sad because it was essentially the end of an era in regards to these smaller gaming studios developing mainly PC games. This game still holds a fond place in my heart though.

I absolutely love this game's soundtrack, especially Remembering Daventry and the main theme

Not a bad game per se, but it was a King's Quest in name only. Daventry, the royal family, and any preceding entry are only barely alluded to, with Graham barely showing up, two portraits from KQ VI (IIRC) showing up in "Daventry" near the start, and the Land of the Dead being blatantly contradicted by the "Dimension of Death" later on.

When I played this game, I always found it easier to do combat in first person rather than third person. You had better sense of how you were oriented in the environment. 3rd Person I used for exploration, where I wanted to be more aware of my surroundings. As well, I notice you didn't really use your Ranged Attack too often, its very helpful when fighting other ranged fighters, even if the damage is smaller. But yeah, overall agree with the vid, underrated game, even if my copy had a MASSIVE glitch in the underworld that locked me from completion without cheats.

For a first video, that was really well done!
Also I have quite fond memories of playing this as a teenage. Still not sure if I want to play it again just to keep the nostalgia

I have fond memories of playing this game as a kid too. It's fun, but flawed. I love the soundtrack and some of the dialog is just silly, which I still adore.

i was 18 and was making the jump from console to pc. i had never played a King's Quest game and this had just come out. I was absolutely blown away by this....Isame with ultima ascension....people hated on these games because of their legacy...but for me me they were and still are masterpieces...

This is a very well-done review on a game on which, to my surprise, very few videos exist. I think you should dive into the late-90s territory and do more reviews like that. really enjoyed what I watched...

I've really only seen hardcore King's Quest fans bring up Mask of Eternity. Almost no one remembers it, and it's not available for purchase outside of GoG.

Kings Quest 8 would've been better received as a standalone game. The fact that Sierra was pushing out so many 3d games at once on different engines just really confuses me too. If this was your first Kings Quest game to play I can understand enjoying it. But for anyone who played what KQ classically was it was a kick in the nuts.

i have a feeling some devs wanted to create their own RPG franchise, but executive meddling forced them to make a new king's quest game. such is the case for many franchises at the time

"I certainly enjoyed watching my brother play this game! 🏆 But, Oh wow! The hero not wanting to do the task is certainly something modern! Haha! Zelda, Mario, Halo, Metroid, & Sonic games rarely- if ever- had the hero having person, 'what about me?', conflicting issues. Haha! Enjoyed the video tho! That game was memorable, which is one of the best types of games!" (-James)

Und Dein Englisch klingt ziemlich gut, also mach ruhigen Gewissens weiter. :)

Lol, they went from a 'violence as a last resort' perspective to a 'kill everything you see'.
    Kind of funny.

Hi 😉Are you interested in the previous development stages of Kings Quest 8? If so, you might be interested in a video that I just uploaded. There you can check out the various alpha versions of the game, all of which date from 1996 - 1997. The game has changed a lot over these years.....

I have not yet watched your video, but I recall how I felt back in 1998. I was very unhappy that they not only to decided to abandon the classical adventure game genre but declared it as something that "is over" and now is the time of 3d RPG action-adventure. And it could have been avoided just by choosing a different name for the game. It was unwise to call it KQ 8. Why? Die hard adventure game fans like me will hate it. 3D Action buffs will fear with the Name KQ implies that it will be just another "boring" Fantasy Adventure in a 3D disguise. It should have been presented a spinoff instead. Maybe "King´s Quest Adventures: Mask of Eternity ". Why continue the Number 8? How is it related to the other games and the ongoing saga of this family clan? I can understand that some people who never played 1-7 liked the game for what it is. Even despite it´s bugs, game design flaws and underwhelming 3d graphics (even back then it was ugly). But those people are very unlikely to check out Kings Quest 1-7. If they liked it they will check out the excellent Gothic 1 and 2 next.

To be fair, I don’t think Sierra advertised Mask of Eternity as “King’s Quest 8”. That said, they probably shouldn’t have marketed it as a “King’s Quest”.

    • @schnittmagier5515
      @schnittmagier5515 9 месяцев назад +1

@@oppie47 indeed, the 8 might be missing on the English cover art and the advertisement might have been different in the USA, but here in Europe it was definitely marketed and seen as Kings Quest 8.
Here some official Names in other laguages:
King's Quest 8: Mascara de Eternidad,
King's Quest 8: Maske der Ewigkeit.
Only in English the 8 seems to be not part of the official name.

Kind of funny how that Top of the Games disc has King's Quest VIII and Quest for Glory V right next to each other :)
Personally, I find this to be a fairly mediocre game. It's playable, but not really that interesting. I was never a huge King's Quest fan (I've only really played KQ 6/7/8), so I think I'm fairly neutral on the matter.
However, I do think the genre change has some serious consequences. I do personally dislike it when a series of a games I'm a fan of suddenly pivots to a completely different genre and demographic. But in this case I think you can also ask yourself the question: where do you go from here? What would a King's Quest IX look like? There's almost nothing linking this game to the previous ones, despite some minor narrative threads. Would the next games all just have been action games with some minor puzzling, like this one? And Sierra already had a series RPG/Adventure games: Quest for Glory. KQ8 always seemed like an evolutionary dead-end for this series to me.
