My studio is my happy place. Sofa, kettle, rugs, patio chairs and sun lounger, woollen blankets and a crackling fire for winter...but it's much more than that. It's where I am privileged to play just as a child plays - all day long, forever. Painting, sewing, filming, writing, designing, drawing, teaching, learning - it all happens in this cosy space. I put in the hours but I never work a single day.
It was a long time coming. Outhouses were popping up all over my property when the chidren were small, but I was too distracted and my hands were too full for me to say "hang on! I'll have one of those!" In the end the stars aligned and this little place, that was once a shed (albeit one hand-built from insulated panels by my resourceful husband Marcel), became this magical log cabin in the woods.
Down here I am with horses, cattle and sheep, and I see stoats, raptors and rodents all around me. Above all I see a fluffy white dog, my good friend Reuben. By and large I am unvisited here. I have studio lights, wifi and power. I have a sewing machine and an iron. I have a sink and a tap. I have all the inventory I need to fill my SketchPockets when they are finally ready to send across the globe.
So I have caught it in my sketchbook on a lovely day in summer. I invite you to sketch it with me.

I never thought about drawing the initial sketch with watercolor. Great idea! It doesn’t matter to me what you’re drawing -I look at your RUclips page and draw along with whatever you’re doing. It’s always enjoyable and always learn something!

Enjoyed this. I like how you are not bothered to show mistakes….and then how you recover so well…in ink as well!! It’s very encouraging as I can be too much of a perfectionist and want to give up at the first mistake!
@@AA04 well if I gave up at the first mistakes…or even the hundredth…I’d have very empty sketchbooks!

I couldn't agree more. I just finished my 12th year of teaching drawing and painting and I can't count the number of times I've said to students "Be patient! You're at the beginning. A painting has to be built step-by-step and you have to have faith that it will resolve into a good painting by the end."
Btw, I proposed to my plein air painting students to form an Urban Sketching group and they're very enthusiastic. We started this week and I'm quite hopeful it will be a success. Best part is that it isn't a course, but a sketching group, so I can draw side-by-side with them instead of being the teacher... hurray!

This is amazing and very enjoyable Roisin! Thank you for sharing with us!! My quiet studio is my bedroom. I have plenty of storage and my bed is my soft place to paint. I am disabled but working toward double lung transplant. I am hoping for health and life back so I can paint all the more.

That was a very helpful video. I like how you started with the diluted brush. You were right, it never showed in the end. I’m waiting on my colored ink delivery. I only have Emma ( love) and Lily (just looks dark to me, not brown). I opted for Lamy pens because I’m not as confident with my fude but after watching this and see how much you used the reverse of the nib I’m thinking I could have just purchased more Sailor pens. Glad you got your sketch in before it rained it turned out really nice. I love how you did the greens and shadows. Thanks for sharing your tips and time.
