Again I am amazed on how many things watercolor can do - so many textures and feelings and tones and themes. And this from a "simple" video on painting sand ... Exiting! Overwhelming! Inviting! Seductive!

It's so true, watercolor can do a lot of styles and subjects. It's what has kept me painting with it going on 29 years.

Great tips! I love the way you mixed your sand colors…and by using different mixes of the same paints kept it uniform. Painting the sand, ocean and sky are some of my favorite things to paint. Thanks for sharing!!

When things get normal again, you need to come to Myrtle and walk in that beautiful sand you painted !

Ooh, yes, I would love to go back! I have photos from Myrtle Beach when I took the workshop many years ago now. I need to paint some!

I've been perplexed about mixing colors for sand and this was a great tutorial to answer some questions :). Loved how you wrote the color names with the mixes at the end. Still wondering about sand colors at sunset in case you'd like to do a part 2 to this. Thanks!

I am glad the video was helpful Gina. I will put sand at sunset on my video list. Maybe a follow up for next week...

At 2:25 Brilliant tip about blocking off an area!
Thanks so much for all the color mixes for the sand - I've been sweating over what exact 'convenience' (pre-mixed) colors to buy for different shades of wet and dry sand, and this helps so much.
I wonder if the person who discovered burnt sienna had any idea of how many different ways it was going to be able to be used in color mixing?!

I live in a small town in Mexico, where would I get masking jar?

I would try some online art supply places for masking fluid. I don't know what is available to you.

What do you use to remove the mask?

    • @lorrainewatry_watercolors

You can use a rubber cement pick up tool. It looks like a rubbery eraser. They are usually sold by the masking fluid. You can also use your fingers to sort of roll the edge of the mask and then lift it off the paper at an angle. I have also used masking tape to touch the mask and then lift it off the paper.
