This is a very important lesson: Value is king and...value-correct the complimentary color BEFORE adding it to the color you're graying down. It seems that painting is a practice of mastering values. Great info. Thanks so much.
When you added white to the blue before adding it to value adjusted orange mixture? I almost fell on the floor! You just saved me so much aggravation! I think I cried a little. What an amazing lesson. Thanks😉
Thank you so much for this excellent tutorial! Out of the many videos I've watched about mixing colours, yours has definitely been the most beneficial! :)
Your quick tips are very much appreciated miss Dianne.. thank you so much for helping beginners like me who are struggling with color mixing, all your quick tips have been very helpful to me while I'm learning to paint.
As a beginner at age 57 the explanation of value and opposites on the color wheel came to light for me. Mixing of color has been a struggle. Thank you so much for your teaching and quick tips. I value your expertise and will be looking forward for more to come.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! You are an incredible teacher. I have been having such a difficult time mixing my colors, especially earth tones. I finally see what it is that I'm doing wrong. Thank you so much for your videos. You have taught me SO much.
I used this technique today after watching this video last night. I had been struggling with mixing light colors, and this technique really saved me a lot of time. It also gave me puddles of colors I could use to make variations, so the result it doesn't look unrealistically monochromatic.
You have one of the clearest and easiest explanations to mix colors I have ever seen to get to the color you want. Thank you for sharing your insights!
A couple of convenience colors that will get you close to sand colors are buff titanium and Naples yellow light but I love seeing Dianne's method for finding the correct color. Thank you, Dianne.
Thank you so much for an informative explanation on colour mixing. You have given me the right tools and sequence to be more successful in my paintings. I love the way you “scaffold” your lessons.
I have been floudering for many years; tearing my hair out almost! Having a scientific explanation and process will be invaluable!!! Thank you dear Dianne, soooo much! Now I have to practice!
Very nicely explained. Thanks. I have watched other artist's videos on this subject but your method hit the target right in the center! Thank you so much.
@Diane - you are *by far* the best painting tutor on RUclips. Thank you for sharing your knowledge from Scotland. 🏴 You are an absolute star 🌟 nail the hue, then the value, and chroma. 🙂
Wonderful video. Thanks Dianne. A friend of mine (plein air painter) helped me out with the sand color on a beach in Long Island Sound. He said to mix quinacradone red, pthalo green and yellow ochre. I thought that was a little crazy, but it turned out just perfect, given the intense sun, atmosphere etc.
My gawd, I should learnt this many years ago! I always had problems to mix colors and specially to get THAT exact color. This must be the best tutorial about that ever, thank you so much!
I've listened to others try and explain this and it just would not sink in until I heard you explain it, Dianne. Bring the starting colour to the right value & adjust it using the SAME value of its opposite on the colour wheel. Thank you so much.
Finally I get it! thank you so much miss Dianne. Been having such a hard time with color mixing and values, tones etc. Gave up I was so frustrated, ty, ty!
Very informative....thank you so much! I was 'stuck in the sand' and now I can walk with the great instructions you've given to continue on my painting.
Thank you so much! Just getting back into painting and as much as I'd like to think that i remember color theory, there are still many lessons we can learn from if we're willing to put in the time! Loved your demo! Can't wait to look for more :)
Another light bulb moment from you madame! Thank you so very much!!! This just radically re-adjusted how i look at the some of the issues i have with color mixing and value correcting. Thank you again!!
Wow Diane! This lesson was so informative and timely . I’m getting ready to start a painting of our beach lighthouse and was already stressed looking at all the sand and how to select a stock color, but your lesson was perfect and taught me so much!
I'm paying close attention to your palette knife - I see you don't get paint on the top side and I see the tip of the knife is not a point. I think I may be using too small a knife for my mixing and will try larger sizes. The knife is the interface of controlling the palette. I'm finally understanding the value of controlling the palette after years of being a wild mess there. It certainly is a journey ;)
A great explanation - thank you so much. I have been problem solving on how to make the colours for painting dirt roads. They have been too saturated and too purple and so out of place. Thanks to your excellent explanation I am now looking forward to applying my new understanding on how to use temperature, hue, value and intensity to create the colours for any dirt road.
I love how you use the color wheel as welll as the value scale tool! I had not seen the value scale tool before, I have to find out, it would be so useful. Thanks for this lesson!
This is the best colour mixing video I have ever seen. I'm always intrigued by your palette, by how much paint you put out and the order. Do you end up using all that paint every time, or do you store it a certain way? Would you happen to have a video of you loading your palette and cleaning it between works? i have a tendency to put too little paint out and then have to reload right in the middle of something which is a distraction. I would like to put out more but am afraid of wasting paint.
Where have you been for the last 8 years!? I’m self-taught, and wanting to grow in my watercolor mastery. Really REALLY needed this lesson. Thank you for your clarity and ‘scientific approach’ to color mixing!😍
Thank you for this. I've been chasing my tail with color mixing and the light bulb came on when you demonstrated focusing on value correcting first and then neutralizing
Amazing! I just tried with watercolors (my medium of choice). Since white is the paper showing through for watercolor, it is a bit more complicated to get the value right by addition of water to the pigments, to allow for the lightening that occurs when it dries.
Totally blown away with your tutorial. I have struggled with how to use a colour wheel for so long. Thank you so much. Can you tell me please if the same principles work for watercolour?
I wil have to watch this a couple of time to fully understand. But now I know why I never got the color completely right. Thank you so much again Dianne.
Thank you so much for this video! I have been struggling to get a sand colour and was about to give up, but this video just helped me to see where I was going wrong and what I need to do :)
This is a very important lesson: Value is king and...value-correct the complimentary color BEFORE adding it to the color you're graying down. It seems that painting is a practice of mastering values. Great info. Thanks so much.
Well said! If the values are not right, nothing will feel right.
Amazing. I’ve realized this recently. Value is SO essential and this video proved it for me.
@@IntheStudioArtInstruction Thank you to the sky!
When you added white to the blue before adding it to value adjusted orange mixture? I almost fell on the floor! You just saved me so much aggravation!
I think I cried a little.
What an amazing lesson. Thanks😉
Well, well! Have fun with this, and thanks for watching.
Wow, what a lesson! At the start I couldn't even 'see' the green or red in the sand colors. Thank you for such a useful TIP! Warm regards.
Give it a try and enjoy the journey.
So informative. Value correct first before adding the complimentary color - game changer!! Thank you.
You are so welcome!
Wonderful tutorial! Thank you so much!!
You are so welcome!
Thank you so much, Dianne! Adjusting the value of the complementary color! Brilliant!
Thanks. Have fun with it.
I wish I've seen this video a few years back when I was doing a beach scene for one of my classes. Thanks, Dianne for sharing your knowledge.
It's a pleasure. Thanks for watching.

Amazing lesson. Thank you so much. Will watch this over and over until it's imprinted on my memory bank! I need the patience to listen and practice.
You can do it! You'll learn more by doing.
@@IntheStudioArtInstruction Thank you! Yes it's all in the "doing" and I will keep at it☺

Ah, Daryl, that delights me. Have fun on the journey.
Thank you so much Dianne, I have seen this demonstration by you before but am so grateful to have it refreshed again. 💕
My pleasure, Anne. This is my standard method for finding any color, so you'll probably see it a lot more.

Thanks for that info Paula, but for me rather than a convenience, these would be a hindrance.
Well done Diane, I'm going to listen about 5 times and practice, fantastic and thanks!
Rock on! And have fun with it.
Thank you so much for an informative explanation on colour mixing. You have given me the right tools and sequence to be more successful in my paintings. I love the way you “scaffold” your lessons.

Yes, his choices are the same principle I am using here.
I can't tell you how beneficial this information was for me. Thank you so much, Dianne.
