About vampier survivour: I think they're both right. It can be fun to have the colors move around on my screen, when I click the button, and building each run pairing synergies together is cool, but it does get to a point where the colors moving around as you stand in the middle of the map might cause brain rot. Ster deciding its bad by using cheats to get every unlock doesn't make sense, and Jerma putting it as his game of the year because he can play it durring poop time only makes sense because of what we know about him.
The Vampire Survivor argument explains perfectly why Jerma and Star came together through TF2, the wacky game with lootboxes and random crits but also the game with a crazy high skill expression.

@@AveryHyena there's a little meat. when i last played i tried challenge runs with upgrades turned off, curse turned on (enemies move faster), bad character etc. to make it more difficult. so i'd have to be very optimal with the movement to dodge everything and farm levels efficiently. otherwise you fall behind and you can't keep up with the enemies getting more hp. but still i got bored of that. a game with a lot of meat with a similar retro aesthetic i would recommend is tiny rogues. sodapoppin's played it on stream a few times. it's kind of like a 2d hades. so you're still dodging enemies like in vampire survivors but you also get different weapons you need to aim, a dash, lots of choices that can make or break a run, etc.

Hades is such a bad example of Ster's point. I started a new save file last year and beat it after a few runs. The mirror upgrades are way less important than knowing enemy attack patterns and what boons to take.
Jerma had one of those moments that everyone has with cereal, Where you put it in the bowl with milk, you take a bite, then something draws your attention away, and it winds up being like 5 minutes til your next bite. And then you think that cereal is the worst thing ever invented by man because it instantly turns to mush. No cereal is like that, But you often have times where you just let it sit for too long and it does get soggy. Frosted Mini wheats in my experience are one of the longest lasting cereals in milk because theyre so porous and dense. Their structure sustains for much longer.
It's a little ironic that Ster complains about Hades' progression system while saying it's too hard without the upgrades. There's literally dialogue for winning without upgrades, sounds like Ster's just a low skill gamer.

I think even Risk of Rain and Realm of the Mad God have metaprogression in the terms of character unlocks. it's the reason i distinguish between "rogue-like" and "rogue-lite": true roguelikes' only difference between doing well and sucking shit is how much you know about the game. rogue-lites (which IMO are a lot more fun) reward you just for playing even if you're not improving mechanically. i remember sinking many hours into Dead Cells before ever getting close to the final stage. if i wanted to play a game where skill was the deciding factor for winning and losing, i'd just play a fighting game
He doesn't understand ADHD. Vampire Survivors is a cookie clicker. It's purpose is to barely make it above the threshold of doing nothing, so you can keep your hands busy. It anchors your conciousness to reality so you can do things like take a call from your boring mother, or have those "alone thoughts". The whole point is to have a task to complete. It doesn't matter if it's "Survive 30 minutes on this guy". The point is to have any reason to keep doing it. Once you run out of goals: You just quit. I just want a task to complete, and I can't emphasize enough how important it is for me to have that. You can't add more stuff to it, because then you'd have to pay attention to it, defeating the whole point.
I like how sters whole argument is "I hate that its not skill based" then talks about cheating and that he didnt like Hades because in order to max out the cheat mode you need to die a lot. What i got from this is, Ster only likes rogue likes if they dont have perma upgrades, so pretty much he wants an arcade type game. Also strange ster said he liked Binding of Issac when the "good" items are all locked behind hours of gameplay, and beating it with a base build is completely possible, but unrealistic, less realistic even than hades imo.

In a universe very similar to ours, Jerma does a cooking funny gag bit on stream, with one of those play cooking sets you get for children as toys. The words "let's get cooking, people!" become popular in the Jerma fanbase, in reference to the dollhouse, malewives, and the fact that it sounds like he said "cooking people" and not "cooking, people".

I love vampire survivors, i have almost 100% twice, but i agree with ster. Every level is easy when you have so much control going into it. Re-rolls and locking things away, and having queen sigma, its not even a rogue-lite anymore.

Hades is such a bad example of Ster's point. I started a new save file last year and beat it after a few runs. The mirror upgrades are way less important than knowing enemy attack patterns and what boons to take.

Jerma had one of those moments that everyone has with cereal, Where you put it in the bowl with milk, you take a bite, then something draws your attention away, and it winds up being like 5 minutes til your next bite. And then you think that cereal is the worst thing ever invented by man because it instantly turns to mush. No cereal is like that, But you often have times where you just let it sit for too long and it does get soggy. Frosted Mini wheats in my experience are one of the longest lasting cereals in milk because theyre so porous and dense. Their structure sustains for much longer.

true roguelikes' only difference between doing well and sucking shit is how much you know about the game.
rogue-lites (which IMO are a lot more fun) reward you just for playing even if you're not improving mechanically. i remember sinking many hours into Dead Cells before ever getting close to the final stage.

He doesn't understand ADHD. Vampire Survivors is a cookie clicker. It's purpose is to barely make it above the threshold of doing nothing, so you can keep your hands busy. It anchors your conciousness to reality so you can do things like take a call from your boring mother, or have those "alone thoughts". The whole point is to have a task to complete. It doesn't matter if it's "Survive 30 minutes on this guy". The point is to have any reason to keep doing it. Once you run out of goals: You just quit. I just want a task to complete, and I can't emphasize enough how important it is for me to have that. You can't add more stuff to it, because then you'd have to pay attention to it, defeating the whole point.

I like how sters whole argument is "I hate that its not skill based" then talks about cheating and that he didnt like Hades because in order to max out the cheat mode you need to die a lot. Then when told that you can finish Hades on the first run, his argument was "but it takes too much time to get that good" yeah brother, thats called skill based.

What i got from this is, Ster only likes rogue likes if they dont have perma upgrades, so pretty much he wants an arcade type game. Also strange ster said he liked Binding of Issac when the "good" items are all locked behind hours of gameplay, and beating it with a base build is completely possible, but unrealistic, less realistic even than hades imo.
Can't tell if Jerma calling Vampire Survivors goty is contrarianism or if his brain is just too calcified to handle real games anymore 😔
