I was out there but only in the morning. Some of the waves would close out the bay across to Clausmeyers. I heard the waves got bigger after I left. My lone wave was the biggest I had surfed, picked one of the "smaller" waves so I would not get closed on. Another friend of mine, Craig WIlson was out there. We were 17 at the time. It was my last day of surfing as my father was transferred to the mainland. I left before the more high profile surfers arrived.

If the guy who paddled into third reef pipe says it's the most significant wave he ever rode, it's going to be bigger than 25 feet

Greg Noll was the John Wayne of surfing...no jet skis, no wet suits, just guts JMO

Its a lot cooler that photo/video evidence doesn't exist from Greg Noll's 1969 ride at Makaha. It means we have to use our imaginations and rely on storytelling from the past to get an idea of what that wave looked like.

There is no picture or video of it. But Noll himself did take a pic of a similar wave before he went out that Surfer magazine called the largest wave ever photographed. So if the wave he tried to ride was anything like that, it was probably a 60 footer. Which is insane given he paddled out, used a long board and had no leash. He is the man and that is all there is to it.

    • @rufuspipemos

Agree. To me the most amazing thing is he caught a 60-foot wave without a tow-in and with a long board like that.

It doesn't matter if it was the biggest wave ever ridden, but it was definatly the biggest swell recorded in the last 100 years, and he was out there, surfing it. That to me says he surfed the biggest wave ever. Screw details!

The best sources I've heard say this is the wave before the wave. Albert Falzon knows perfectly well this is not the real wave because he shot this one and then minutes later, Shaun shot the real wave with a home movie camera while Albert was reloading film. I think the only reason Albert is saying this is because he's trying to force Shaun to release the film of the real wave. But that's not going to happen. I don't know what kind of deal Greg and Shaun made, like maybe he could release it after Greg's death or whatever, but it was way bigger than this.

Why did it take so long for these pictures to surface or be acknowledged? I’m calling horseshit on this one.

  • @rufuspipemos

I don't think the pic at 1:49 is of that wave, regardless of what this guy says because all the witnesses say that as Greg got to the bottom he "stepped off" and was demolished. But that pic shows him at the bottom just fine. And the first pic at 1:35 looks like Waimea, not Makaha. Finally, if this guy had been taking pics of the moment, he would have been showing them for decades, not sitting on them for no reason.

Legends, especially surf legends inspire a culture and a mystic, it's us as followers who create and perpetuate myths, not the legends themselves..if you hear myths and believe them verbatim, then you're naive, the spirit and the stoke, the aloha inspired by these tales is actually more beautiful than a fact checking clones facts...that shits for scientists...

Greg Noll was born in 1937, therefore he is 74 today. The narrator looks about 50. He was does not look old enough to be there, also there were very few Australian on the Islands at that time. He might not even have been born before that day.

In my opinion it doesn't matter if it was or if it wasn't the biggest wave ever ridden. Probably not.
What matters is that those guys were there. They were the first ones to do it. With massive boards and NO LEASH.
Everybody knows nowadays that these waves are rideable, but that's only because these guys did it first (well... the hawaiians did it first, but there were no footage on those early days, only tales of epic waves). (To be continued)

I fully believe this is definitely the ride because there was actually another photo sequence of the same wave published in one of the magazines at the time with a caption saying something like Greg Nolls ride or wave. You would have to check the old mags in 69 or 70 to find it,but I know they also published it in another mag comparing it to Mark Foo's giant wave he caught and wiped out in the mid 80's during a day when the Bay grew humongous and every one had to get rescued.

These kangaroo pleasing aussies constantly try to bismerch everything that these pioneers of big wave surfing have done! If they put forth the same energy and commitment into actual surfing they would be revered as legends as well! They choose to channel the bullshit into worrying about what everyone is doing! Sad!

@onenonlydannyB There are several problems with this account (coming many decades after the facts) most promenant being that there were several witnesses to Noll's ride including the legendary Buffalo Keaulana - "Mr. Makaha". and also a dozen or so North Shore stars. But apart from that, the shot presented does look like it was taken from 4 stories up: that angle would show a much longer shadow in front of the wave ie. Jaws and Mavericks shots which are taken about 100 feet above sea level.

Gregg noll v has made up many large exaggerations on everything, yes he was there, and in great shape, but why not start a story for the sport, he made a ton of money, he still dies, a lays has big bucks carried by his v second wife, around here he does not pay for anything except gas, no discounts for the ledgend, now he just and old man living in the forest of nor cal rehashing his youth, too Oooo oo bad his b set ledgend, his brother jimmy died, he was a humble surfer a v great dad and husband not like his old bro a big tightwad, so their is my thought about g noll, ask him if you see him how v much did he help his son tate over the years or Ryan or his first wife, nill, give him some free Hawaiian barbecue and he will come up with a great story dealing with the sport, enjoy I used to like him until I met his family and the friends who rode with him, it's not like he was a war h e ro or former president, now he just counting time , the reaper wants him bad,, he's gotten away from him for many years, most recently he almost drowned off the coast when he fell off his own boat. When he came into my store, of course I was in shock, but he cheated me and did not pay me what I wanted for my stuff, been let down since, and waiting to hear he's kicked it. He is truly a person with an anger issue, look at all his interviews plenty of cussing going on, great example I believe a deal was made for the wave height but he's only a surfer, but he's be one filing rich because of it.and does not believe in sharing it with his first born, what a greg
