- It's been an exciting year for found media so far, and just in the past few months we've got several new finds that were insane or just really nice to see. Here are some of the most recent finds from the community!

Another lostwave song, "Just A Game", was also found recently with help from the late OP's daughter! Shortly after the original creator was contacted as well, giving us more insight into the song.
Yes, this is an excellent find for this year in the lost media community. I'm glad we found this, for you, Gabor.

Ulterior Motives has to be one of my favorite lost media searches ever. There were so many theories, and it got mainstream attention. Then it turns out the story behind the song was nothing like we expected--the truth being hidden by the very guy who sparked the search himself, Carl92
bruh if you were there for the search you would see how stupid nearly everyone in the search was. im almost 100% sure that 7/10 people in the reddit were under the age of 14 and the real theories were brushed away like there was a point in time i think late 2023 where people were speculating if it was in a gore video or porn film and everyone discarded that for the stupid white mike johnny glove and savage garden theory.

Ulterior Motives being found in an Adult Movie was so funny to me back in April. A week prior, I turned in a video assignment for my science class and the video contained the 17 second snippet. If my teacher did that assignment a few days later I might’ve been screwed over.
I'm just picturing the guy punching the air stoked as hell, but going like, "Ooooh, no, now I have to shift through ALL THIS ADULT MATERIAL! But if it's for the community, I'll do it I guess!" and then he falls out of his gooncave weeks later with his d i c k chapped to s h i t and a thumbs up
Imagine if it was found earlier and the teacher researched the song
11:35 I don’t get what’s the deal here? It doesn’t matter about the “ethics” or whether or not it “makes a good story”, and there’s no “spirit” of lost media. The whole point of finding lost media is to find and archive the media for the sake of preservation. Lost media isn’t a content mill for RUclipsrs to farm numbers.
Not to knock him too much but I think he might have some bias as someone who makes videos on the stories behind these finds. It's objectively a win but it makes for a less exiting story for him to talk about.
The ethical side of it can be more of a concern but for stuff like pilots, there's pretty clearly no harm is having it out there.

How is this objectively wrong in any way? For this to be objectively wrong in the ethical sense, the opposing party would have to have been wronged or injured in some way. In many cases, aside from a minor inconvenience of a conversation, there is no physical, mental, or financial damage done. The material isnt being used, and will likely go to waste, causing damage to those interested in it. And on your point on it being selfish, if its putting material in a public light, how is it selfish? To let interested members of the public enjoy something, rather than let it be kept to a few individuals, who arent profiting in any way from it? It sounds selfless from my perspective. And morally speaking, many cultures have seen themselves prefer to help preserve content for historical purposes (and in the modern context, microcultures from online communities count too). And on your argument of it being about hubris or whatever, who are you to comment on who deserves what? What is YOUR place to comment on what is objective and what is not? You would be right on a legal standpoint, but your arguments aren’t about legality. They’re commenting on the possibility (not definite) of the motives of people, on what they deserve as people. And you call it theft, despite it being made public, and not restricted? How is this depriving the original holders of that material? Theyll have it, but now so can other users.
In conclusion, I fail to see the validity in your points. And whats your problem? Who are you to decide the moral and ethical fabric of recovering lost media?
Hey we got a comedian over here!
If im a Degenerate Narcissistic Egotist for wanting to not let media that isnt "legally" mine and wont be open to the public for Over A Century be lost, Then So Be It.

As far as i understood it they only couldn't find the master vocals but everything else is from the original tapes

Last June a VHS recording of a previously unknown 1976 episode of Chapulin Colorado was discovered by fans of the show. This series is the Doctor Who of Latin America in terms of lost episodes. Not only El Chapulin, but El Chavo too. Brazil loves to track the lost episodes...
Leaks of old/unreleased content are always morally correct.
I disagree with your opinion about leaks. Unless the leak is actually hurting the creators/companies, I don't think it's a bad thing. None of those pilots were hurting anyone by being released. It's a good thing for people who are interested in seeing that kind of stuff too. Imagine how much of this stuff just sits in the company's archives, but they don't release it just because it's not profitable. I hope the rise of interest in this kind of thing will change that.
A lot of lost media tubers say stuff like that as kind of a legal thing in case a big company that owns the copyright comes after them for encouraging followers.

Brotha it's 2024, almost everyone with a voice that can be heard is a corporate shill.
big disagree on your takes on leaks, unless its actually affecting the profits of the creators/companies by leaking (none of those pilots wouldve) its not hurting anybody and is a net good to have that art out for people to enjoy who are interested. it makes me sad how much stuff like that just sits in company archives and because its not profitable they do nothing with them. hopefully the interest in these leaks changes that view slowly.
I'm inclined to agree.
The point about the "story" of it kind of gives me the impression that his perspective is a little bit skewed as someone who makes videos talking about this stuff - Getting this stuff dropped in our lap is objectively a win but for the RUclipsrs talking about what happened, it's less exciting "material".
It can hurt the creators and companies in one way.
Because these pilots are technically the intellectual properties of the creators, any unlicensed use of copywritten music has the potential of landing them in legal hot water.
This is especially a problem when the pilot is tied to a show that has been greenlit.

While I don't agree with the point he was making (imo it seemed more focus on telling the story for content over the actual preservation) I can see why leaks wouldn't be ideal, as many companies, especially Disney, even when they're not making money from the IPs in question, they will cling onto that IP and by releasing the pilots without their permission, they can make the claim of it being piracy, which, if they wanted, could result in legal action being taken, which means not only would the content become lost again but, it could result in places like The Internet Archive and any platform with the content on it being sued and depending on how big they are, shut down, resulting in even more things becoming lost again

The spirit of lost media is the preservation, if it got found by a leak with no fanfare, that's fine, because the media has been preserved, which is the most important thing to a lost media search
That take on leaks was bad. In this case, it's not like somebody was maliciously releasing the pilots to upcoming shows. There is SO much stuff out there collecting dust. Some leaks release stuff that no one knew about, or if they did, nobody was going to find it.
Lost media is about preservation. It doesn't matter if it's not an "interesting" story to make a video about, it matters that we have it.
Also, leaking a little bit of something before it comes out builds up hype.

Best 4th of July ever lol
Also what about the original Backrooms photo? That find is up there with The Boondocks pilot and EKT for being the most legendary find of this year.
About the Disney TVA leak of pilots and pitch bibles, it is indeed true that these originated from 4chan, specifically in a thread that was intended to stir up a conversation about Martin & Yolotzin, another leaked Disney TVA thing, but seemingly not connected to the leaks of all the other stuff. Now about the ethics about the leaks and stuff, while I can't deny the practice being seen as icky, I did finally conclude that leaks can be separated into three categories;
First, the leaks that share content that never would've been released otherwise, much like that cancelled Popeye movie, and Bremen Musicians from prior years (plus from what I've seen, the involved people that worked on these pilots, like Matt Danner on Shred Force and Mega Mega Whoosh, as well as SF's creator Matt Maiellaro, seem to be pretty chill with it, based simply on the fact that finally people are getting to enjoy what didn't get the chance to be seen). Second, the ambassador's look; Depending on the circumstances, these leaks can be good _and/or_ bad; Sugary Spire for example, the devs only intended for Demo 1 to be the only demo build, so at the same time with its slow development this kinda leaves itself with a bit of playable drought, while two playtest builds from 2023 show how some of the levels after Sugarshack Mines are coming along. Primos also falls under "The Ambassador's Look" and the first one, as the first two episodes did leak in full, and with all their original elements intact, which will not be retained for their proper release. Then the third one is firework-smuggling; I saw a 4chan anon share the behind-the-scenes contents of the Glitch Inn, which were only meant to be for paying customers. I'm pretty sure that's only one that truly counts as just a bad leak.
i think its very gatekeep-y to say that finding lost media from data leaks is “cheating” or “not in the spirit of lost media”. the fact of the matter is that disney likely would have never released these things themselves, and this was the only realistic way to find them unless someone who worked on the show miraculously had it. i understand youre operating from the perspective of a content creator, but its still a weird thing to say
...Also, I heavily, HEEEEEEAVILY disagree with the notion that "getting tons of pilots quick and easy out of nowhere" is a "cheat code" or "cheats the lost media community out of a good hunt" or whatever. The purpose of this stuff is preservation of media, not a *game* for people to play, regardless of how many people have morphed it into that in their own heads. That's such a... wildly selfish, immature take. There's also no "right way" or "wrong way" to do this, or any rules to follow; the one and only goal should be to have media catalogued and not let it be fully lost or forgotten, it's all about keeping information from being lost, there is no "bad way" or "proper way" to go about it.
EKT is actually still only partially found, not only because of the messy audio, but also the song played in the film fades abruptly, meaning there's likely more to the original master audio not included in the remaster.
Just say the full name Ulterior Motives
7:50 I met Lincoln Peirce at the Maine Comics Arts Fest a few years ago lol. You could try reaching out to Casablanca Comics about getting in touch with him, since they ran the con.
Seems a bit silly to say leaks "aren't in the spirit of lost media", tbh. Most found media are discovered and posts unofficially and unauthorized. Many are technically leaked. If you did get Me and My Friends from someone who worked on it, that would be a leak since they likely aren't the official copyright holder. Cracks (the Sesame Street short) was very likely leaked from someone who had access to it but wasn't the owner or copyright holder. Ripping and posting a VHS tape of a lost Nickelodeon short is illegal copyright infringement. The only way to find media completely legally is to either convince the copyright holder(s) to release it themselves, which we all know by now is not likely, or wait like a hundred years for the work to pass into the public domain and then post it which has some pretty obvious problems if you're searching for anything more recent than the 1930s. Frankly, copyright and trademark law are your enemy if you are a media preservationist/lost media enthusiast. I'm not saying copyright law is 100% bad (as a creator I certainly like parts of it!) but it is what allows works to be locked away indefinitely and archives to be destroyed.
"we've searched for topics the right way" what an unhinged, insane, gatekeeping thing to say regarding lost media of all things
im lost mediaing so hard rn
fr
I don't think leaking is inherently bad. I think intellectual property is a dubious concept at best and I don't really see why you would get that upset about someone leaking the pilot to a show. "It's using someone else's content without their permission!" I mean I guess, but if the missing pilot is just rotting in vault, the artists and the rights holders are earning absolutely nothing off of it anyways. The only time I would agree that leaking is bad is if it is a security risk; leaks sensitive personal material such as nonconsensual nudity, a person's death, or something else the creator is not comfortable sharing; or the leaker uses it for immoral purposes, such as profiting off of it or claiming it as their own work.
The ulterior motives one was hysterical. people were too scared to look through porno to find that one, despite the fact that was a proposed theory multiple times.

Holy crap, I remember filming a full reaction of my brother watching Big Star Secret on a Nintendo 3DS in 2011, I still have that Ds, so I’m gonna see if I still have the video.
Update: Sorry this took quite a while. I had to look all over my house for the DS and I had to charge it. Anyway, I’m really sorry to say this, but I don’t have the video anymore. I don’t know how it got deleted , and I’m so sorry for disappointing all of you that were exited to hear this news.I know this sounds like I’m lying to get attention, but I swear I vividly remember filming a full reaction of my brother watching the video. I’m sorry. I also asked my brother if he deleted the video off the ds, and he said that he doesn’t remember me filming a reaction of him, nor does he remember watching the video. He most likely forgot, since he was really young, and I vividly remember doing that, so it’s most likely he deleted it because he though it was embarrassing and forgot about it. Also, I don’t really remember the video itself that well, so please don’t ask me if I remember anything from the video. If only my brother didn’t get his dirty hands on the camera app.
