  • Psychologist Jonathan Haidt has become a leading voice in the debate about digital technology's impact on young people's mental health. His research, particularly the findings presented in his book "The Anxious Generation," suggests that smartphones and social media use are having a detrimental effect on children and teenagers.
Haidt argues that constant screen time is replacing traditional childhood experiences like free play and face-to-face interaction, leading to problems like sleep deprivation, social isolation, and even addiction. This alarming message has sparked a national conversation, with governments considering restrictions on smartphone use for younger age groups, and parents and schools taking steps to create more tech-free environments for children.
Haidt's work raises critical questions about the impact of technology on our youth, prompting us to consider whether we're unknowingly harming a generation through this "uncontrolled experiment." Pandora Sykes, a journalist and author, joined Haidt in exploring these issues and their implications for society.

In 1994 I was a sophomore and he was a senior and we had barely taken 10 steps off the travel bus after a handful of days in Florida for a marching band competition when he told everyone the true story that he had “fooled around” with me for 3 hours. This being the end of the school year I only had to deal with being called “the 3 hour tour” for maybe 2 weeks. The next year was a new year and no. One. Cared. Anymore. That term was never hurled at me again. When I think of kids these days I imagine myself and how I would have lived my life for at least the next two years if not more as “the three hour tour” to where it was my identity-Never having that “new year” to begin fresh. Heartbreaking

Where is this speech from? I think OP took the whole video and zoomed in a bit and high-pitched the voice in order to avoid copyright strike. Where can i see the original upload?

The studies speak for themselves. You can't argue with suicide rates of teens skyrocketing in perfect correlation with use of social media & front facing cameras. I am so grateful parents of healthy teens commented about that, its true some are mentally & emotionally stable & able to regulate themselves. But they should speak to one of the thousands of parents who's child took their life because they were bullied to do so by classmates on social media. Blanket statements are ignorant. Those who dont have the interest, curiosity or attention span to read these studies, should have an opinion as loud as their willingness to learn. This is one of the most serious issues of our lifetime & deserves a large stage.

What do you mean? I hear “I work in schools. I have kids. This guy is making up stuff.” Where are your experiences? What do you see? Please- your voice matters. Where do you live and what’s the socioeconomic background and what have you seen change since you began teaching?

@@Saritabanana he states a lot of statistics that are either unsubstantiated or could be explained by progress and time. like maybe girls and boys are less secretive about these issues and are coming forward more and in some cases qualify for hospitalization this all increases the numbers but doesn't state whether this has always been the case.
