When I was a kid, we used to stay at a hotel out in Indiana every year. They had a Pole Position cabinet in the pool area. I have very fond memories of hearing, and occasionally actually playing, this game.
This was my first video game in life. ;-; I remember my dad would work the pedals while I steered and shifted gear from Low to High while I stood in the shopping cart, at Wal-Mart.
I remember when my brother and I were kids, when we'd go to the airport to pick up our grandparents, we would play games in the arcade while we waited. He would play Moon Patrol while I played this.
This takes me back. Eastbourne pier back in the 80s. All my pocket money went on this game and I could never beat it. The 80s was a golden era for arcade games.
I remember as soon as I put a quarter in this game was SO LOUD! like you could hear that start jingle across the arcade. I don't know why any pole position that i've played has always been excessively loud
So that's it? Four minutes and it's over; no second track to play? Geez. I know they only wanted you to play on a machine for 3 minutes, but there's not much there. People say they like the Atari 2600 port, but once you make a few laps, it's over too, and it will be hard to beat your time or score. I was hoping for something more on the arcade version.
Boy was this one tough racing game. You had to be near good as an actual race driver to conquer this classic. Also, this is the game that is said to pave the way for many racing franchises we have now.
I beat the game this past week at my local game center. It seemed like the version you played gave you much more time to complete it. The one I played, where you actually sit in the machine, gave me a much shorter time frame to get across the finish line and reach the actual goal with a flagger. Anyways, I videotaped my ending, giving me a score of 46200, and a time of 182"99. The game is extremely difficult to complete :O
Back in the days those were the days! I remember as a small child we vacationed to Las Vegas alot. Long before the Circus Circus sky shuttle was taken down we would go to the lobby in front of the Circus Circus Manners and play this game while waiting for the shuttle. Good times😃😄😃
I think "Pole Position" was one of the several arcade-themed cartoon shows in CBS' "Saturday Supercade" lineup! Other shows like that included "Q-Bert", "Frogger", "Donkey Kong", and "Donkey Kong, Jr."
The game was such an enormous success over 30 years ago that it was named Game of the Year. I wish Bandai-Namco could remake Pole Position into a 3D based racing game with the NBC Sports license, commentary by Leigh Diffey and Michael Andretti, and a licensed soundtrack featuring the likes of Avenged Sevenfold, Flo Rida, Black Stone Cherry, Boston, Drowning Pool, Bad Religion and Shinedown, among others, as well as have Eutechnyx develop the game! It would be a lotta fun!
Two differences i noticed between this game in MAME and on an actual arcade machine: 1. The score after every lap is about 100 points more than 10,000 in MAME, whereas on the arcade machine you always get exactly 10,000 points after every lap. 2. The top speed in MAME is only about 180-190 mph, but on an arcade machine it's over 200 mph (max is 244 mph I think).
Once you hit the 200mph range, the car goes into turbo mode of excess 300kmph..steering inside to the corners & steering to the outside avoiding tire screech..thats the keys
I had that. Pitfall. Pac-Man/ mrs Pac man. Dig Dug. Street Fighter. (Blanka and Dallasiam) were the hardest. Why? They both had a secret power: Blanka with the shock method. I forgot the roll over method.AND the biting method.
Yes, but more specifically the Namco part of it. In later reissues after the merger, it is not uncommon to see the copyright assigned to BNEI (Bandai Namco Ent. Inc.)
Marboro ads in a video game you can tell how old this game is wouldn't get a way with it now even if the company paid the game developers every penny they had lol. Gotta love how cigarette manufacturers took advantage of kids in the day.
+Gary Beltz I believe all of the product placement was paid for by Namco to be more true to real life race tracks. Also, the Atari 2600 version of the game onwards replaced the Marlboro and Martini & Rossi ads with 7-Eleven and Dentyne adverts. What surprises me, though, is that all the product placement ads are still on the original games in the various collections they've been released on since (Pole Position II and U featured similar ads).
I wanted to watch a video like this, but in the last one I saw the lady never shifted into high gear, ran out of time, but had some kind of time cheat so could just keep going.

Omg, drifting in this game is like a scream from hell.
IKR?

Yeah, was gonna say that too.
Oh god, it is!
It sounds like a bat out of hell

The Intercom that says prepare to race sounds like the adults from Charlie Brown.
Prepare to qualify

One of the greatest early '80s arcades
Such memories as a 80’s kids in the arcades, wow this has real brands on the signs

Awesome!!
I am always taken back to my youth when I hear the beeping countdown before the race.
80s arcades were great fun and tech you couldnt get at home.
This is my favorite arcade racing game.
Oh my freaking god the drift sounds like as if someone scratches a chalkboard in a atari 2600 my ears are like screaming for this to end
It sounds like a giant fart to me
Earrape back in the day
This game brings back memories of when I was 5! I used to play this on my computer a lot!

Got it on Namco Museum on the N64. Freaking rad game. 51,300 points. It may be simple, but the need for speed is a crazy motivator.
now i know what game Mouth is talking about in The Goonies. i had always wondered what this was.
I caught that too when I was watching the Movie not too long Ago.
Chunk: Look at this. It says "1632". Is that a year or something?
Mouth: No, it's your top score on "Pole Position".
You're beast as this. I couldn't get past the qualifier stage because I could barely steer and didn't know how to switch gears. -_-
No one is supposed to. Note how they don't even have the voice actress say:"Prepare to race".
"Oh no, you ain't! you're going to play POOOLLLL-"
+pootis spencer Ohhh, but I wanted to stop exciting things from happening!
-E POSITION!!!
Then a Judas Priest ripoff tune starts playing with lyrics about the game.
Absolutely BEAUTIFUL ! 😍

Sounds like the Pole Position game from the 80's 😂
" prepare to qualify " sounded worse than the moon landing communications
This game could never be made in 2020. Especially using a recording of a murder for its drifting sound effect

Probably just difficulty settings in the DIP switches
This is how I learned to drive. It was at the arcade in the mall. You had to sit shift gears press the gas and break. Fun times
it didn’t exactly turn my eyeballs into steel-belted radials, but i’ll take it.
I love SCHLAUCHI
youre the best player
Seems like every game s/he plays, s/he beats it on One life. Ever notice that?
I have been beating this game recently. Twice on a Plug and Play and twice on the GBA version. I hope the next Namco compilation includes this game.
The music when you are in the blue room whit Highscores it's sounds so cool
Tool assisted? The person playing gets through even though they aren't a great player.

Omg I played this as a 5-year-old in 1987 in the paradise beach hotel in rhodes/greece. I failed miserably.

A 4-minute longplay? This must be the shortest arcade ever.

@referral madness Dude, there are tobacco and alcohol ads on the signs of the game, that's why i said it.
I don't remember if I won it in the arcade, but I just thought how lame the 2600 version was with no replayability. I think Night Driver lasts longer.
