one thing you could do to improve efficiency of the infrared light is to remove the filter in the camera that blocks infrared
ay bud, I'm doing a build like this. dash cams have better clarity and pick up nominal infrared light, add two of these $20 pilot dash cams 2 pocket juice batteries, and a mini infrared flashlight, and a dream vision goggles by tzumi, under $80 you will have 3d night vision goggles
Milk Man Thank you, bro. I've been scouring the net all night trying to come up with an affordable yet functional set of night vision goggles and this is the best idea I've heard all night. Have you built this yet and if so, how'd it turn out? Did you mount infrared lights or just use a handheld light? I have 2 handheld crank USB charger and solar charger so can charge those battery packs up in a pinch if the power ever goes out so like the little rechargable battery packs idea. One thing i'm thinking about is have you researched using a larger dashcam that has the 6" display and one offset camera? I"m thinking this way I could mount the camera right in front of my right eye so I can possibly use it with a rifle scope and then mount a led light where the left eye would be on the outside of the goggles. I don't know if 2 cams would give a better picture or just one wide screen? Also want to go with whatever way uses less power.
Why is it that RUclipsr night vision goggles look better than military night vision goggles? Design wise.

so thats what the mirror was for.
open up the camera. there is an IR filter glued to the sensor. Pry that off with a razor, and the camera will accept IR light better.
i tried to make something like this myself a few years ago and had exactly the same problem with the range :(

Connect ir flashlight and phones might deact the light and boom
Today you could buy those cheap wifi cameras that have a fairly decent array of ir lights anf uses about only 5v of power or by a battery pack if you need more help on how to rewire the system just search for the camera model and pcb patterns you so instead of directing the sensors data to wireless it woud direct it to the external screen.

Young man time for you to wire up some 12 volt drill batteries lightweight portable and last a decent amount of time just make sure you wire with the right transistors and whatnot

Anyone know what a camera that is literally just a camera connected to a screen is called I have an idea that I'll probably never do but may work where you just have to cameras with the ir filters removed hooked directly to two screens that are placed in front of your eyes and have a ir emitter attached to the sides of each which would make night vision goggles possibly but there isn't a name for a camera that is literally the most useless camera ever

did you take the infared filter out of the camera lens
Unfortunately, I couldn't really access the insides of the camera without breaking it.
what type of battery are you using?
I was using a rechargeable 9v battery. Probably one with more output and capacity would be much better for this project if I were to do it again.

Do you say 12v power supply good for ir power up
Kayum Ali yeah 12v worked well for my IR light. It obviously varies depending on what IR light you choose to use.

I am trying a 10W 940 IR light power by 12v 9800mAh lithium polymer battery I chose the 940 because the leds do not glow red it can not be seen by eyes
