  • This is a bit long for RUclips, but I didn't really post anything about building it so I guess it's totally my fault I crammed it all into one super video.
    I built this thing over the course of about half a year for my father in law. He is a woodworker and expressed some interest in getting a CNC router, but they are expensive and he had some thoughts on what he wanted that didn't really fit into an off-the-shelf offering in his price range. So I took on the challenge and I think it turned out well for a first try.

    Best cnc router build I've seen I'm about to build a cnc router good to see one built by someone who knows what there doing there's alot of very average cnc builds here on youtube. the vacuum table still got me stumped how it works that well.

      It was a bit of a brain teaser for me at first, but basically the mdf acts like a porous sponge for the air. Enough of it can pass through to act like a giant manifold over the whole surface, but not enough can get through around the part to reduce the vacuum level by much. Keep in mind that the vacuum motors can move a lot of air. You do have to cut into the first little bit of the mdf because the density and glue amount is too high to let much air through. And you also have to give the vacuum a manifold to be distributed evenly, hence why I cut a grid into the bottom of it
      This setup really only works well for extremely flat and smooth surfaces, like mdf, plywoods, plastics, metal, etc. It doesn't hold down very well to anything with the least bit of texture.

    Nice. I'm building up my collection of shop automation myself. Running a cnc router, co2 and fiber laser, and 3d printer. Just got a spindle for my own set up. They're pretty handy!

    Brilliant job mate.. Jeez that was a lotta work. Looking into the electronics and electrics box remindde me of those big machines I used to work on years ago. U open the door and it's full to the brim of working parts.. A hck of a lot went into this build man so be proud of it..

    Thank you for sharing. It's an amazing project and I loved the detail and effort you put into this for your father-in-law. Despite the fact I have no experience with CNC, I am thinking this would be a fun project. My only concern is finding all these parts including the issue of making the custom parts myself. Great share.

    WOW, Reini! This is the most well-built DIY CNC I have seen. And we appreciate all the close-ups and detailed explanations. You seem to have thought of everything. So neat and tidy! And so capable. Fast! Precise! Versatile! Sturdy! Do I dare ask how much it all cost, and whether you were doing this as a gift, or did your father-in-law pay you to design and build it?

    Reini, I keep coming back to your video explanation of the control box and wiring it to 220V. You've really put a lot of thought into it. I'm confused about bringing in 220V then splitting it for the various components, how to balance the current legs, where to stage the EMI filter in relation to the contactor, the breakers, any fuses, etc. Boy, a wiring diagram would be helpful. Any chance?

    Lucky father-in-law, nice build. He should consider using RV antifreeze(pink) it’s not Harmful to breath like what is used in cars.

    You don't have bearing housings for the motor end of the leadscrews? Any reason you left them out?

    Awesome Job and design skills on the CNC project - Very well thought out!! What are you using to drive the vacuum table? Also, did you 3d Print small "Wingnut Style" hand turn knobs for your stainless gear clamps? If so, good idea. Having trouble finding the 3d Print file. Do you know if it exists out there? Thank you!

    This is a great build. I like the raised gantry and am maims mine similarity. Could you send a link where you purchase the control cabinet from. It looks perfect.

      I got the control cabinet locally, a factory was selling off some of their old and unused equipment. It is made by Rittal IIRC

      I used an adjustable breaker for the spindle drive and set it to whatever the FLA of the drive was.

      Local manufacturing business was selling random used and unused components on facebook marketplace, got the enclosure from them and a bunch of other things (breakers, contactors, wire, etc.)

    That's an amazing build. Very nice job.Just wondering if you had a wire diagram for this build and if you wouldnt mind sharing or hell i would even pay lol. Would of loved to see a full build video of this machine being built.

      No wiring diagram. Once you start building the circuits it becomes pretty apparent how it needs to be laid out, just follow the path of the angry pixies. Everything is pretty basic power and ground, breakers and contactors on certain circuits, relays, etc. The thing that requires the most thought is how the e stop circuit is going to be laid out and what it interrupts, but even that is fairly simple. The one important thing I would recommend not forgetting is some contactor coil wiring don't have flyback diodes, just add a diode over the coil terminals. If you have any wiring questions there is a great diy cncs facebook group that I post to regularly, there are some helpful people there.

      It all runs on a typical 30a breaker, but could probably run on less without the vacuum table. Each circuit inside the cabinet is on its own breaker (fuses would work here too).

    Great built, can you put a link to the Nema23, is it really 1100 Oz.in!! Never found such torque in this category

      I must have been recalling the specifications for the motors I had on my previous milling machine. Those were nema 34 motors at 1100oz/in.
      These motors are 570oz/in, still quite powerful for a nema 23 frame and with a larger 3/8" shaft instead of the usual 1/4".

    did you mill that ball screw to fit. looks like you annealed to cut it down or trim it

      Yeah annealed them to turn them on my mini lathe. The outer bit is very hard, the inside is just a little bit harder than regular steel.

      @@minskmade spindle bore is almost exactly the od of the 16mm screw. I made a bushing for the end of the spindle and a sleeve for the chuck to clamp down on. The screws are long so I put one of the bearing blocks on the end of the screw and clamped it to the workbench so it didn't whip around.
