Yea it's suppose to prevent bleeding into the layers before it. But in most cases you do want that effect. My buddy showed me this a while ago, and it's super useful.
Basically our eyes are pretty good at seeing things, and typically artists will paint what they think they see and OVER exaggerate on accident. Subtly, is in the forms we see, but representing them accurately. It this can range in many things, from value, color, edge, detail, and many more. You should always make bold statements in the beginning and use subtly to help bring it into a more final look. I hope this makes sense.
:O wow, I just learned a lot about playing with layers and their effects... I usually just add one on top of the other and play with opacity, but your techniques seem to produce very good (close to realistic) results :D I think I will try them. Thank you for the tutorial!
hey anthony! cool tutorial, i just subscribed. but i got a question, hope you can answer. how were you able to change hue and saturation only on one layer? i tried some things but cant get it, my photoshop creates a new layer that effects all the layers below. im using cs5. and thanks for all of your paintings, your really one of my favorite digital artists.
hi, big thanks for the vids. i have a question, though. the very bright light coming from the right. is it reflecting off of the character(because its very bright and i read, that matte surfaces should have a maximum local color/value? or is it a light behaviour you actually see on matte surfaces?
Anthony, are you asthmatic by any chance ? (or have a general trouble with breathing?) I have studied something called "Buteyko" which helped greatly with my breathing problems. Great video btw.
what are your brush settings?, and in 8:18, you started describing the third clipping mask layer, but what color are you using? and how did you paint it like that? it sees like something important was left out.
and when i take for example a hand very near a light bulb, the hand becomes almost white with all the light exposure(which shouldnt because of matte surface?). is that actually a highlight on a hand? if not, how would you call it?
I have real trouble understanding where light sits on something, like a human body. I understand I need to know the direction it's coming from, but for some reason applying it doesn't help me too much. I always need reference images :/
This thing blew my mind just the other day, this kind of content is timeless.
Jones, you're such a kind person. It's really nice of you to do this. It helps SO much. Thank you for that.
when something is subtle it's careful and not directly noticable. For instance, gradients give subtle changes between value or colour.
You did something I'd never seen before to your key light on layer style. I'll be sure to try it out.

Thanks for sharing! Never thought of using blending modes like this, I'll be sure to implement them in my own stuff too.
