I sometimes fish the artificial fly on a spinning rod using a technique we call the 'bubble n' flea'. Tie a bubble float to the very end of the line. From about two or three feet above this tie the flies to very short droppers. Cast the tackle out and let it float down in the current. You can even jiggle the flies around or make them dance on the surface if you want. Works great in fast moving trout streams. :D
I've been doing that all spring/summer this year for bluegill and crappie. Slays em. I also like to Carolina rig streamers. Tie on the streamer using a loop knot. Put a tiny (I like Spro) swivel about 18 inches (45cm) above the streamer then use a 1/8oz bullet weight (depending on current and depth) above the swivel. You can leave the weight free sliding or peg it. Free sliding can impart more action sometimes but it's more or less if you forget to peg it. Then to mimic the stripping action of a fly rod, just twist at the waist using the rod to pull the streamer along for the desired stripping length then reel in the slack when you go to twist again. Or you could just use a steady retrieve. I've also started using tungsten bullet weights for this technique considering tungsten offers more density in a smaller profile. It just makes for a cleaner presentation, in my opinion. And on a spinning setup, even an ultra light, you can toss almost any size streamer pattern.
Lurher Jenson 1" Super Duper lure. I have fished over 65 years and this lure has caught trout in every state fron south to north west. Overall it has always worked, lots of colors gold, silver , rainbow, red/white have been best.
I'm 75 and have also fished for 65+ years. When young and poor all I could afford was a red and white daredevil for 25 cents! Caught a lot of fish on that simple lure. Have caught fish in rivers and lakes with super dupers a great lure.
We call than in line spinners at home. (USA) I’ve always had the best luck in rivers using a panther Martin (vibric) inline lure in yellow/chartreuse with a line of red dots, and the hair on the treble hook. Blade sizes from 0 to 3 using 2# test and a nine foot fly rod rigged with a 1000 series Shimano spinning reel. Hard to use in tight places if you can’t wade the creek/river though. Deadly on everything in the river. Maybe not carp though, but we use arrows on them.
Mate i really appreciate this. I think this was my request and the funny thing is, i was up Dargo camping for the last 4 days, chasing Trout, no good. lol. Wrong rod, line and lure. Now i know mate. Thanks again. ATB Moose
Howdy! Just wanted to let you know that I absolutely love your videos! I'm from Wisconsin in the US and just started fishing some of our excellent natural trout streams this year. I have learned a lot from your videos and they have been super helpful for a beginning trout fisherman. I currently fish a lot of inline spinners but after watching this I definitely want to try out some other lures. I really like how you speak from experience but also note that there are many other methods that work this is just what works for you. Very humble and not condescending in the slightest. Thank you so much for the great videos!
That took a lot of courage to say on global platform that Fly is a lure. Dead set legend thanks for sharing your in depth thoughts and experience it's much valued and appreciated.👍
First off I loved the video, but simply couldn't see the lures you were showing us, way to much hand movement when handling the lures as they are so small. Might be best if you could hold and zoom in on the lures etc. so we can pause and get a proper look. am not sure how old this video is so you might not see this comment.
loving your vids Robbie, just started small stream trout fishing in a small stream near where I live (North Wales) caught my 1st 2 brownies on small Acme thunderbolt spoon on very first outing, hooked and lost a few more . I have caught over 100 trout on small spoons 2-3 over the summer , I have only caught 2 on bladed spinners and a few more on plaastics and minnows , maybee its a confidence thing or that on pressurised streams I fish, I've yet to see anyone else chucking a spoon .
Mate what were the 2 soft plastics, I couldn’t catch their names? Great channel, I’m just getting into fishing and your knowledge is a gold mine to me.
Tasmanian devil lures go hard here in NZ! Caught Rainbow on the Pink Panther, Xmas Tree in Green and the Rasta and are my best colours. The Aussie lure became NZ s finest spinner in my opinion.
In Canada apparently the spoon is the most commonly used and most successful. Overall, I think bladed spinner, spoon, and soft plastics are the way to go with trout in particular. I have a little bladed spinner than is green, has a red head, and it catches trout easily east of Bendemere. And then in the peel river I tend to use my own homemade spoon lure for catching Yellowbelly and Cod. I find lures that throw out reflections catch the most fish. I don't even waste my time much anymore with throwing on my diving lures and lipless crankbait lures, since they never really caught anything. I read a funny article that said a lot of lures are designed to catch fishermen, and not fish. I think there is sadly a little truth to it, I think a lure company has to keep selling their product, so they kind of have to partake in behaviour a bit similar to those infomercial people, where they always have to convince you some new feature the lure has is what you need. My natural Yabby lure never caught anything, until I wrapped bright orange tape around it's body, lol. I stopped buying lures mostly. I found the most important thing when fishing is a basic and effective lure, combined with a good spot, combined with making sure I am not too visible to the fish. Generally I find more still spots in the river, especially if there is shade, they nearly always have fish. I am at the point where each trip to the river, I nearly always catch a Yellowbelly. It's a shame I can't find a common Redfin spot however, I used to catch them as a kid, and they were super fun. It's good to have a change in the species caught. Plus you can keep as many Redfin as you want.
Always found Len Thompson 5 of Diamond (Yellow & Red)spoon, Mepps Spinners, Panther Martin Spinners, WonderLure Thunderbolt / Florescence orange hammered nickle spoon, and the Crocodile spoons tended to work the best for me for trout up here in Canada.
I run all trout lures (spinners/plastics) no swivel tied straight on. Yes it does twist the line some and after awhile and a few hard fighting fish you might have to cut a little line off to ensure new unstretched line
every area is different and every body of water in that area is different. I have a lake where it has to be a solid pink rooster tail spinner, and another lake it has to be the frog coloured rooster tail. and then, one of the biggest trout I have caught was on a mepps black fury with the red dots. and for spoons, my favourite has become the little cleo spoons in watermelon for rainbow trout, yellow with red spots for bull trout, and the gold/orange caught me a beauty brown trout.
Hi Robbie. Thanks for all your videos. Great stuff. Just getting back into the trout after nearly 30 yrs lay-off. Can't believe the changes in technology. My 8yr old son and I have been watching lots of your videos to get on the right track. Now to get out and give it a go! Cheers Glenn & Tom
FLATFISH ... flatfish are fantastic lures for trout. Trolling a flatfish nice and slow works great. (Those Wild Bite(?) minnows sound very similar). I've been catching browns and rainbows on my silver, gold and orange flatfish here in Maine (and they work great for bass, too) - esp. the "bleeding frog" colored ones.
Hey mate that should work well. Snap swivels work well too. I just prefer loop knots. Basically, the smaller the minnow the less water it displaces, meaning the more important it is to use a loop knot.
@@robbiefishing Thanks, I understand the concept.. not a fan of snap swivels on the minnows as the clip is usually an irregular shape which can effect swim pattern. I use large baits for big game fish in saltwater with the split ring method as it's stronger than a loop knot but, am just getting into finesse fishing with my ultralight set up and was curious if the light weight of the minnow lures would be effected by the split ring? Do you think the split ring method would interfere with the lure action too much and think the loop is superior for this application or do you think there would be much variance?
Great video sir. My go-to is the classic Panther Martin. I have yet to try the Blue Fox. Might have to pick some up! Thanks for the tip! If you ever make it the the U.S. (I assume you live in Australia), I highly recommend the Upper Midwest. Lots of streams and rivers. That is where I live and fish and make all my videos.
Hey Robbie have you tried a Berkeley's atomic teaser they work really good on trout I caught a lot big trout over 2lbs to 4lbs on them look for them and try them if you haven't yet
Hey buddy, it depends on the sort of water you are fishing. I LOVE the strike tiger 1 inch nymph in "Orange Spawn" colour, it is dynamite on redfin. If you're after a bladed spinner it is hard to go past a Blue Fox super vibrax in bright colours.

Good information Robbie, but with more and more anglers using these soft plastic lures, what happens to the pieces of the plastic that are torn off the lure? There is a concerted effort around the world to rid our waterways of plastic pollution and here are you and your fellow angling gurus, advocating the continued use of plastic!! 🤷♂️ I’m 69 yo and have been a keen angler since catching my first fish at the age of four and a half. Rapala floating, Blue Fox Super Vibrax/ Rooster tail (black and brown are generally your best bet), plastics combined with 1/8th and 1/16th ounce Jig heads (1" or 2" bodies, curly tail grubs work best in my experience), and flies are the door he listed. I concur, other then the flies but only because fly fishing is a whole other world/expense. my go to also use a rapala FO5 for small streams. both get constant hits but the powerbait tends to be eaten off hook(guess I should use a treble hook.

how do u set up the line for spinners/spoons? is tying a swivel directly on lure ok?

I like using small little Cleo's and kastmasters for small trout and bigger ones for steelies and bigger trout and salmon
Good stuff Robbie loved it all👍👍👍
I like superdoopers for trout work very well with a light rod and line
Hey robbie I was wondering I'm using rapalas a lot for trout I was wondering what's the best rapala to catch bigger fish
Probably a mini rainbow if you are going for trout
Blue Fox is the best spinner hands down. For salmon and steel head
Robbie, mate, what microphone do you use with the GoPro you got? Love watching some of your older stuff.
Great video man I will definitely use these lures 👍
What size spinner would you use for a small stream catching 10 inch brook trout
Awesome video! Thank you brother👍
great video mate. very helpful tips
i like the roostertail it's funny some days they hit silver blade some days they take the gold blade u should have both colors in your tackle box
I never go anywhere without a black rooster tail. best spinner ever. works on many different species.
yeah that's so true
Cheers Mate !

Difficult to troll for trout when fishing in a stream/creek/ brook that’s only 6feet wide🤣🤣🤣

Power bait sucks of native trout, and you cant cover near as much trout on bait as a lure.
My dad caught 60 trout in 2 hours (all native) and his friend caught 100 in 3 hours (native). Fishing freshly stocked water is cheating
Best thing for large trout is Nightcrawlers 12in off the bottom
am I the one person here who just uses some powerbait and leaves the line out
my go to also use a rapala FO5 for small streams. both get constant hits but the powerbait tends to be eaten off hook(guess I should use a treble hook.
It said blooded spinners
I couldn't see the lures , you're talking about, so I couldn't give you.
