This information was very helpful! I tried looking up information before my 7 month mini dachshund was spayed but didn't find anything as helpful as this (maybe I didn't search long enough, ha!). Most helpful was the reminder about using a puppy pen and the Adaptil collars. We are on day 5 of recovery and my puppy has a seroma from being too active. I'll be getting a light sedative from the vet today because it's hard to keep her calm. Particularly because we have a 4 yr. old pit-lab and they both feed off of each others energy.
@@HowToTrainADreamDog thank you! we tried the light sedative last night and 1/4 of the pill it didn't seem to do much so I gave her another 1/4 (the pill bottle said 1/4 - 1/2 every 12 hrs). So I will be sticking with the 1/4 pill every 12 hrs going forward since the 1/2 seemed to make her more energetic for some reason (keep in mind this is at bedtime around 10p/11p). Her incision looks good though, except for the swelling around it, so that's good!

We agree that it would be nicer for her not to have so many stresses at one time, but she will probably do better with healing if she's in a quiet home with humans who can be attentive. A shelter could be a stressful environment for recovery. Don't push crate training if she's not ready for it. Focus on helping her adjust to her new home (perhaps use a pen with a soft bed at first, where you can keep an eye on her). Once she's doing better you can begin crate training.
My dog has a deep cut in his paw pad and needs stitches for it. We didn’t have time to train him for it but he did already have a neuter so he is probably going to remember the cone. Thank you for this information
Our doodle just got neutered yesterday. He's already doing much better today but how do you feel about spraying coloidial silver on the surgical site to speed up healing?
@HowToTrainADreamDog thanks! I feel like because coloidial silver is not FDA approved, most vets wouldn't recommend it even if they knew it could be helpful
I loved your videos, you got me subscribed. I did not know how to keep my doggie come back to her nylabone. Do you have any live training virtual? I'm fropm mexico and sometimes i don't know what or how to keep her anxiety at bay. She's a collie from a shelter
We adopted our Pomeranian a month ago. She has really bad separation anxiety, we’ve been working on crate training since day one but she hasn’t improved much. She will scream and cry for hours, scratching it and begging to get out, and basically acting like she hasn’t seen me in a million years when I let her out. I genuinely feel like her freaking out in her crate for 14 days will be worse off, because she will just be scratching and screaming and freaking out, rather than having down time. I have a bed that’s too high for her to jump on or off, and I like to leave her on my bed when I’m doing things. She’s very calm on it and I think she should definitely be ok. And for the rest of the house I can just have her on a leash when I need to go downstairs to do something. I just don’t think keeping her in a kennel for 14 days will work out at all. But for after she heals, do you guys have any advice to help with crate training? She. Freaks. Out. For hours. And no, I 100% completely ignore her crying, not even going ‘it’s ok don’t cry’ so I haven’t been rewarding her cries. So idk.
Johanna, these are just our suggestions for safe healing. Each puppy can be different, but we recommend you run these things by your vet as well to be safe! We recently released a video all about how to stop crying in the crate. You can check it out here, it will be a great place to start: ruclips.net/video/s0r-E3R3XT4/видео.html
Thank you, Katrina! We'd love to see some pics of you and your puppy in our Puppy Training with Michele Lennon Facebook group: howtotrainadreamdog.com/FB-group
What are your recommendations for us? We have sisters (golden doodles). They always stay in playpen together, and they sleep in the same crate at night. My concern is that they will be too inclined to stimulate one another, and even though they can’t reach their own stitches, won’t they want to lick their sister’s? In other words, should we separate them for the 10 to 14 days. They are almost 5 months old now. Thanks!
We never ever put 2 dogs in the same crate. It’s important for each dog to have their own space. As they grow and mature they will potentially fight for space and being in small close quarters would not be safe. When they are little we want them to have as much separate time as possible so hyper-bonding doesn’t become too big of an issue for you. They should be crated separately, trained separately (before they can be trained together), walked separately and have their own playtime and downtime as well as one on one time with you. Of course, we want them to interact and play together but littermates that don't get enough time away from each other become significantly bonded together and you will likely be the third wheel in the relationship. We want you to be the focus so they pay attention to you and follow commands when you ask. Dogs that don’t get enough time apart tend to only focus on each other. As they mature to about 2 years you may see more conflict between the two arise. Make sure to start training the day they come home and follow the advice above so you don’t run into this littermate syndrome issue. Many breeders refuse to allow littermates to go to the same home for this reason. Unfortunately, not all breeders understand the severity of this issue and haven’t done behavior modification once the problems have escalated.
@Oksana Gutierrez While I appreciate the above advice, since they HAVE been together for 5 months now, and will be neutered soon, does she recommend NOT doing it at the same time? And although, with the goal being to begin separating them, it can’t be done overnight. Is surgery too stressful a time to begin separating them? Good luck with your chihuahuas!

Yes, if you pup is able to use their paws/nails to scratch the incision it can easily catch and rip a stitch out. Most pups don't have this issue for a spay or neuter surgery because the incision is much lower.

Our dog was neutered 4 days ago. He is now zooming and biting us and being aggressive. Any suggestions on how to deal with this. He is on a sedative but that is running out today.
Please check with your vet to make sure it's not an adverse reaction to the medication. You might also work on a few more brain games with him, which could help him settle better.
We will be getting our dog neutered in the next couple of months...I currently have a pen and crate for my puppy (like the setup you had in one of your videos. It's a metal pen...but now he can jump over it and he's just a pomeranian. Any suggestions on what to get?
My 2 year old dog was neutered 3 days ago and he shakes on & off. Is that something normal or should I be worried? His incision site doesn’t show any sign of infection.
I guess my question is how often does it happen that a dog is overactive and makes things worse ? I do my best with the pup but I can’t monitor him 24/7 and he’s done some running and jumping
Whenever your pup is unsupervised, especially when they have gone through surgery, they should be in the crate so there is less chance of them hurting themselves. It's best to drain their energy proactively with enrichment and games so they are able to rest.
We recommend a cone or donut, but each puppy is different on what they will personally need post-surgery to keep their incision site safe and clean. Talk to your vet for more specific questions on your pup!
You can always give your veterinarian's office a call. They may ask you to email a picture of her incision site for reference, and give you directions once they see it.

My dog was neutered yesterday and he is weak, as expected, but he is eating and drinking water as normal. The problem is he didn’t eliminate anything since yesterday morning. Is this normal? After how long it becomes a problem and I should contact the vet? Thank you in advance 🙏
Same protocol! That will be a lot of change for the pup, so you'll definitely want to focus on giving your pup a calm, safe place to rest. I had already crate trained my pup, but with the cone he can’t fit in there for 10 to 14 days. So, he’s really sad. He just sleeps near the crate on his bed 😭
My 8 month old, female Catahoula is getting spayed tmr! I'm really scared because I don't want her to be in that much pain! (we are gonna her pain medication) but still, she's gonna be wearing a cone and all. so, yeah wish her luck!
It is scary for us puppy owners. They will get through it! And you've come to the right place to make sure they are cared for properly! It sounds like your puppy will be in good hands with you.
This will depend on your puppy! It would vary depending on breed, size, surgery, etc. We don’t want to push things too quickly. For more specific questions, you can post in the Puppy Training with Michele Lennon Facebook group and a member of our team will get back to you! : howtotrainadreamdog.com/FB-group
My 4 month old puppy (had her for 4 days now) sleeps all the time, doesn't want to leave her bed when awake (unless it is to eat) and she seems very depressed. She doesn't even want to play with her toys. Is this normal or should I be worried? Thanks in advance!
This is very normal when a pup is transitioning into a new home. Often they are tired and don't eat much including treats. Give it some time and you'll see pup come out of her shell and be more active.
@@Evie998 🤣 Recommended By who? A Veterinarian that wants your money? That makes absolutely zero sense to remove the hormones from an animal before they are fully grown. Most people that spay or neuter their dog do it bc they think it is some magic fix for behavioral issues and they are too lazy to train their dog.
@@tlonnan84 a veterinarian with more knowledge about animal hormones and anatomy than you lol. It’s not done for behavioral issues, that’s ignorant. It’s done around 6 months because that is the best time the dog can heal easiest. Neutering doesn’t solve training issues either, that’s also ignorant. Also, you can’t actually remove hormones but you’re making less in their systems by neutering, and doing it young is safest for your pet to heal and recover from.

Our doodle just got neutered yesterday. He's already doing much better today but how do you feel about spraying coloidial silver on the surgical site to speed up healing?
You should discuss that with your vet!
@HowToTrainADreamDog thanks! I feel like because coloidial silver is not FDA approved, most vets wouldn't recommend it even if they knew it could be helpful
My baby just got spayed monday its Saturday its a little pinkish red is that normal shes not messed with it.
Please check with your vet!
I loved your videos, you got me subscribed. I did not know how to keep my doggie come back to her nylabone. Do you have any live training virtual? I'm fropm mexico and sometimes i don't know what or how to keep her anxiety at bay. She's a collie from a shelter
So sorry we are just seeing this comment now. I apologize that we didn’t see it sooner. We hope all is well with you and your pup.
Awwe my pup is having surgery on Friday and I’m so nervous it’s my first child
Sending comfort your way and healing vibes for pup!
Thanks!
Thank you, Katrina! We'd love to see some pics of you and your puppy in our Puppy Training with Michele Lennon Facebook group: howtotrainadreamdog.com/FB-group
All of this was helpful. Cooper goes the 17th of March for his surgery. So I need to go purchase some tools. Thank you.
How did it go? It has to do with the dogs superbonding. They also need their own safe space. Did you end up separating them?
@@clarcrab2 how did it go? She didn't really answer your question instead just gave you a lecture.
Help me! Actually i live on 3rd floor. How can i walk my dog after surgery? I don't want her in pain.
You can get full instructions from your vet on what she's able to do.

hi. are nails of any threat to their stitches? my pup is being spayed in 4 days. thank you
Yes, if you pup is able to use their paws/nails to scratch the incision it can easily catch and rip a stitch out. Most pups don't have this issue for a spay or neuter surgery because the incision is much lower.
We are on day 7. My dog came out of surgery like nothing happened. He is completely insane and is making me insane.
Oh my! Hang in there! Here are some games you can play with your pup to give some mental enrichment - these may help. ruclips.net/video/yC9h9jvRPQA/видео.html
Did not know this! Thank you for doing a video on neutering
You're so welcome! Glad it was helpful
🤦🏽♂️ no one ever mentioned that I would need to train for post op so the fact my dogs neuter is tomorrow morning is now super intimidating
Hopefully this video helped with making sure you are prepared!
You're soo pretty
Thanks for watching!
I want to know what the incision should look like by about 6 days post-op and when to reintroduce exercise and normal activity
We recommend you check in with your vet about this.
my doggo is having surgery tomorrow and I’m nervous of how he’ll react 🥺 I hope everything comes out well lol
It can be nerve-wrecking for sure! Just don't to give your pup daily mental and physical exercise :)
We will be getting our dog neutered in the next couple of months...I currently have a pen and crate for my puppy (like the setup you had in one of your videos. It's a metal pen...but now he can jump over it and he's just a pomeranian. Any suggestions on what to get?
We love this pen. It is tall and has vertical bars which makes it harder for a dog to climb up. www.howtotrainadreamdog.com/puppy_pen_indoor
My baby has his surgery next Monday. At what age do you recommend this surgery? Is the boys spade or neutered?
It is recommended to fix your dog when they are fully grown. The boy surgery is a neuter.
Recent studies have shown that larger dog's growth plates will continue to develop well past their first birthday!
My 2 year old dog was neutered 3 days ago and he shakes on & off. Is that something normal or should I be worried? His incision site doesn’t show any sign of infection.
A call into the vet wouldn't hurt!
Does anyone know how much sprayed cost?
We recommend contacting your vet about this! The prices may vary slightly.
N Texas....200.00 dollars
I guess my question is how often does it happen that a dog is overactive and makes things worse ? I do my best with the pup but I can’t monitor him 24/7 and he’s done some running and jumping
Whenever your pup is unsupervised, especially when they have gone through surgery, they should be in the crate so there is less chance of them hurting themselves. It's best to drain their energy proactively with enrichment and games so they are able to rest.
What about a baby onesie vs cone
We recommend a cone or donut, but each puppy is different on what they will personally need post-surgery to keep their incision site safe and clean. Talk to your vet for more specific questions on your pup!
my dog just got spayed 3 days ago and it still looks a bit swollen. Idk if this is enough concern to take her back to the vet 😭
You can always give your veterinarian's office a call. They may ask you to email a picture of her incision site for reference, and give you directions once they see it.
My vet said no outside for 10 days....we have pads but idk if that is appropriate or not.
We strongly recommend NOT using puppy pads. We have a whole video on this, you can check it out here: ruclips.net/video/TaUV1q5RZD8/видео.html
@@HowToTrainADreamDog Even if the grass is covered in irrigation water after sprinklers?
We would say to wait until the water is dry. Using puppy pads for 10 days can significantly hold back your potty training.

Any thoughts on using CBD treats to calm them?
This is something to consult your vet about.
My puppy got spayed 4 days ago and she is now having peeing accidents while she sleeps, this can go away or she will be like this forever?
We recommend you follow up with your vet about this issue.
My dog was neutered yesterday and he is weak, as expected, but he is eating and drinking water as normal. The problem is he didn’t eliminate anything since yesterday morning. Is this normal? After how long it becomes a problem and I should contact the vet? Thank you in advance 🙏
This is normal, the meds can have that effect on them. You can always call the vet to double check and rule out any other health issues.
this is great but what if you adopted your pup the day after they got neutered?
Same protocol! That will be a lot of change for the pup, so you'll definitely want to focus on giving your pup a calm, safe place to rest. I'm getting my dog spayed in 3 years from now. She will be 5 when she gets the snip. This video is good. However puppy fixing is not good tho.
Thanks for watching! We hope the information in this video will be helpful.
Post-surgery games when space is limited.
I had already crate trained my pup, but with the cone he can’t fit in there for 10 to 14 days. So, he’s really sad. He just sleeps near the crate on his bed 😭
Yes, that happens sometimes! But the cone is important so you're doing the right thing!
❤❤❤

My 8 month old, female Catahoula is getting spayed tmr! I'm really scared because I don't want her to be in that much pain! (we are gonna her pain medication) but still, she's gonna be wearing a cone and all. so, yeah wish her luck!

my 1 1/2 year old Frenchton is getting neutered tomorrow and im a wreck. Im scared for him :(
It is scary for us puppy owners. They will get through it! And you've come to the right place to make sure they are cared for properly! It sounds like your puppy will be in good hands with you.
My puppy is getting spayed and i can’t care for her because i have to go to school.
You might want to ask a friend or family member to drop in and help care for her.
My dog hast not pooped after surgery it's been 4 days but she is peeing. Is it normal?
I would be sure to contact your vet!
What counts as a short walk? 5 minutes? 10 minutes? 20 minutes?
This will depend on your puppy! It would vary depending on breed, size, surgery, etc. We don’t want to push things too quickly. seond!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why the hell would you even consider neutering/spaying a dog before it is fully grown?
@@tlonnan84 it’s recommended to get dogs neutered around 6 months
