This was nice. I have a love/hate relationship with planters that have attached trays. Still, it’s nice to know how to make them. Considering how many I’ve chipped, cussed, & outright broken, perhaps I’ll attempt to throw one. Keep adding bloopers. 👍🏼

Thanks for sharing.. learning pottery I appreciate tips for tool usage as I try make vases. This vase looks similar Rebecca pitcher which close with handle. Do you ever make those? I haven’t thought about starting narrow cylinder for vase I usually cut it down with tool. You make it look easy😊 would love see it glazed as finished product see glaze brakes.

Will you be willing to share your glazing process? I love how you blend the colours as shown on the pieces in the intro.

Absolutely love your work! I took ceramics in high school and loved it. I was actually a natural at throwing. I was a gold key finalist with 2 of my pieces. We had to pass a test to use stoneware and then another test to be able to glaze. I've had a wheel for many years but nowhere near me to get anything fired.

I have a question it would be greatly appreciated if you could give some advice.
I'm currently trying to figure out what type of clay would be good for t throwing taller pieces with out collapsing. I worked with a moist clay that i found great for tall cylinders but not for shaping. And now im working with sculptural clay with grog for strength but i can't pull up a tall cylinder or when i get it a little tall it collapses in the middle of the cylinder and can't form. I'm a little frustrated. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you. I’m glad the video is helpful. That clay is Hestia from Highwater. I fire it to come 10-11 in my gas kiln. I use a locally mixed clay for my wood fires pieces, mixed by Starworks.

I'd say I aim for around 1/8 in thick on most pieces depending on the size of the piece. I usually leave a little more thickness where the neck will meet the body and I usually try to leave a little more thickness on the rim, mainly for looks and durability. Thanks for watching!

I am amazed at how long you can pull before your hands and clay get too dry. Is that expertise alone, your clay body choice, or does your climate help? Combination? Here in dry Central California summer temps reach triple digits, and things dry quickly, and I am a slob with water.

I use Hestia for my gas kiln and a 50/50 blend of new Seagrove and new Catawba from starworks for wood firing. I don’t add any extra grog

I would like to find out how to get more of the weight up from the bottom of the pot. I think I’m doing what’s necessary but after I check the thickness it’s always very close to the same. Inside fingers just above outside fingers or sponge. I make the “wave” and I pull. Somehow it always leaves the bottom of the pot the same thickness after 5 or 6 pulls. Can you help?

What's the cost for one.
I'm trying to study how you open so efficiently. I have been experimenting trying to pin down good mechanics and I run into trouble.. I often create a pillar in the center when I try to move the clay to the outside w my thumb. Then I end up in this back and forth situation pushing clay from middle to outside but the bottom doesn't get thinner. Oftentimes I have to actually use the back of my thumb and trace from outside to inside and it removes clay which gets wasted. It looks like you are using a good portion of your thumb and you keep pressure to the center bottom so that doesn't happen. Am I seeing this right? :) Thanks for the vids Matthew, you are awesome.

Just for what I am reading sounds like your clay is way to soft or you have add alot of water.

I took pottery for four years in high school (all throwing), and then 5 in college. At the end of my college days I was really good. Then do to work I have not thrown for 20 years. I finally started again and I watch a lot of tour videos. Which when I was in college lol internet didn’t really exist (well it was 1999). Anyway I was surprised to see that I had not lost ol much of my skill except! The wheels I used had 12 inch bats and sadly as yard as I tried to find a 12 inch wheel, I could only find a 9.8, and it’s bat less which sucks. So after I throw I cut them and wait 30 min then try and slide them off with a wire under them. But it doesn’t always work and I have ruined pieces. So how do you get them off easily each time? The other problem is I know I use too much water and of course that’s causes taller pieces issues. So how can I throw drier, my fingers if not wet just grip the clay like glue. I have been trying the 1 pound cylinders but still can’t get above 7 inches. I have issues throwing small pieces but not large, (think my brain is damaged)? Any ideas?
I am new in the pottery world but I think I have learned if is porcelain I do not wire under to pot once is between leather hard and bone dry used boths hands and it will come so easy....
About the 7 inches... I think either you are making to wide or leaving some clay on the bottom.
Question... I find when I pull my clay wants to expand so I have to collor my clay back in. Any advice on how to keep a good, straight cylinder?
That’s a great question and a common problem. You have to try hard to pull the cylinder toward the center when pulling to help it go more straight. I’ll add this to my list of video ideas/thoughts to talk about.
