Hello, it should not be covered as the first phase of firing requires the piece to be fired on a mesh firing rack, or atop of carbon, open to the air. Hope this helps clarify!
I have a question for you. I’m interested in getting into jewelry making. I’m mostly interested in making rings. Because metal clays are pretty expensive, I wanted to start out with polymer clay. What tools are needed to ensure my rings would end up being the correct size that I want them to be? And are tools for polymer clay interchangeable with tools for metal clay? Thank you. Your videos are very educational.
Hello, to create rings a specific size you want to use Silicone Ring Mandrels: cooltools.us/products/cool-tools-silicone-ring-mandrels-with-optional-metal-stand They are safe up to 500°F, so you can put them in the oven with the polymer clay around them. When working with metal clay, depending on the clay shrinkage, you'll want to make a larger size ring to account for the shrinkage. For example, a ring made from EZ960 would need to be made a size 8 to reach a size 6. Yes, tools between polymer clay and metal clay are interchangeable, you would just want to wash them in between. Tools that are not interchangeable are when working with base metal and silver. Hope this helps!
Thank you for this great video
After the burnout you let the piece cool in the kiln to 100 degrees before removing and adding new carbon.
Great video! ❤ Question: Do you cover the ceramic firing bowl during firing, or do you leave it open? Thank you.
