Revisiting this video about a month later and I’m proud to say that I’ve made progress. I almost have all of the sounds worked out. “Gy” seems to be the hardest and it’s used a lot in my proactive because of the references to Hungary and Hungarian (Magyar). Thank you for making this video. Köszönöm!

Just discovered these lovely videos! so helpful....My parents were hungarian but they passed away when I was only 21 and since then I had no chance to practice so forgot almost everything. These videos bring it back. I need to relearn Hungarian in just 2 months as I am going to visit there and the older people don't speak English. Two months! at least I still have the pronunciation right (more or less).
    So grateful for these!!

In Polish, "vers" is pronounced almost the same and it means the same. We write it "wiersz", though. Maybe you know it, but i'll say it: in Polish "sz" is pronounced like your "s" and "s" is pronounced like "sz" :)

Szia! Greetings from Western Massachusetts. I went to Hungary several times while I was living in Prague for three years. I spent time in Gyor, Budapest and my favorite; Lake Balaton. At that point I was teaching English and trying to master Czech, so as much as I tried to dabble in Hungarian my brain was hardwired for Czech (plus I was with Czech friends when I went). Now that I have some time I have been turning my attention to learning Hungarian which always fascinated me. I find your videos perfect. After stumbling for the past year trying to find a good resource I came upon your lessons. Please keep them coming as you teach so well. Your style is very similar to the way I tought - Introduce - Repeat - Reinforce and always use Music. I am still quite the beginner but you helped me count, greet people correctly and learn the pronunciation which was always my problem. Köszönöm!

As someone who speed solves Rubik's cubes, I have to point out that the top face colour is white and is solved and therefore the front face can't have white on it. Also the Red face is solved but we won't waste anymore time on that.
    If you want to make that T with a Rubik's cube take a solved cube and do this: R U R' U R' F R F' R' F R F' R U' R' U R U2 R'
The Letter is the face of the cube. R=Right face, F=Front face, etc
A normal letter is a 90 degree turn clockwise, a letter with ' is 90 degrees counterclockwise, and a letter with 2 as in U2 is a 180 degree turn. So U2 is the U faced turned 180 degrees.
    Have fun!

    • @hungariantutor

The plain “a” sometimes sounds like “a” and sometimes it sounds like “o”

Excellently done, Kosonom. The dzs and gy sound very similar to me. Are they essentially the same or is there a subtle difference that I am not hearing. My grandfather spoke Magyar as a young child and translated for my great grandparents who were from Hungary. I hope to learn enough to visit their home.

the gy sound is more like a d sound followed by a semi vocalic y sound(like in yes) while the dzs sound is just the same as english's j sound

      exactly, it's a palatal stop

I think sh sound in hungarian is more common, thus, all the s combinations pull the sounds to sh like, zs=voiced counterpart of sh while z is voiced counterpart of s, cs=ch while c=ts and so on so I GUESS it can make some sense
