I realize that you made this video 5 years ago but you are the third person teaching Hungarian phrases that I've seen on RUclips and you are the best. You took the time to explain why the letters make the sounds that they do. The others taught the same phrases but they didn't explain how and why the "sz" made an "S" sound in English and how the "gy" made the sound that it did. As an older American trying to learn a new language, it isn't easy but trying to learn a language that is as difficult as Hungarian is truly difficult. Your teaching method was excellent. I am looking forward to checking out more of your videos. Thank you very much.
Hi Eszti, hogy vagy? Thank you very much for this channel. I'm Brazilian girl just married with a Hungarian guy. I'll surprise him speaking some Hungarian words 😍 And I really need to know how to speak Hungarian (a little bit) to talk with his family. So, again köszönön

Lived in Budapest nearly 50 years ago and love it. Went there with 8 other couples a few years ago for a River cruise. We all had dinner at me favorite restaurant on the Fisherman Bastion, the Alabordos. Hope I spelt it correctly. Anyway it was magical. Visited the market and had goulash and sausage. I’d love to go back again. I appreciate so much more in my old age than in my youth when I took so much for granite. Truly one of the most beautiful cities and people in Europe.
I can speak a decent amount of Italian and a little bit of German, mostly from college and duolingo, but I decided to have some fun with Hungarian because training your mind to understand more difficult languages makes it easier to learn others. That last phrase is...insane. I cannot say that phrase, I don't even know what sound you're making, no matter how many times I hear it. I keep thinking "Hogey vogey" haha. The Grandparents and all the relatives all together made a cacophony of languages and sounds. Thanks.

You did a very nice job, I am learning Magyarul for over 3 years now and I love the language (and the country). The sound is like music to my ears. It's not an easy language for sure, but very interesting just because not everyone does understand or speak it. I often git asked why at all I am learning Hungarian and I always say, everyone learns French or Spanish and there are so may who speak it, but to learn Hungarian is so unusual it surprises people and that sets you apart. I also found Hungarian people are really helpful when you are trying to speak their language, it brings meeting people to a whole different level to know their language. So, well done, ügyes vagy és üdv Dublinban. Szép hétvégee kívánok neked. :-)
Thank you so much for taken your time to do this. I work in a Hotel and have very many Hungarian friends that work here and are very shy talking in English. I want to learn this language so I can make them feel at home. They are such Beautiful people and would like someday travel to Hungry it must be the most beautiful place earth. Again Thank you. Roy
Thank you! My family is foreign speakers and originally came from Hungary, and visiting my aunt to learn is very difficult at the moment. I've been wanting to learn for a long time and this is a great start!
This is super helpful! I am studying in Budapest Hungary for a year and trying to learn some Hungarian. However, most people when I do try to speak it get annoyed with me and go back to English. But overall the people here are very nice.
About 45 years ago I was absolutely head over heals for a Hungarian boy, and I learned some words. I was shocked to be able to recall them when I heard and saw them on these videos. I remember this phrase Nem tudom hogy mit irjak meg.
I used to have a gf back in when I was 19 from Belarus , she could speak Hungarian almost perfectly lol. Crazy how bilingual people are from Europe, wish more people were like that here in the states
I’m part Hungarian trying to connect with my ancestral roots , and although I have no one here to speak Hungarian with (I’m American), I feel like I connect with this language innately. I love languages, and you’re a great teacher! Thank you! It didn’t seem hard to grasp at all! 😊

I am now in Budadapest for dental tourism, this has been very helpful already I have been using thank you (Koszonom) and also I found the word Please (kerem) very helpful in setting the mood when I attempt conversation. malayu polyglot I am from Hungary. I know the letters and sounds but I feel too embarrassed to speak Hungarian because I am scared i'll pronounce it wrong😞plus I am going to go to Hungary in five days so I need to practice.
Thank you Eszti. I’m visiting Budapest in two weeks so I’m glad to have seen this video with your very clear explanations. Particularly the explanations on the sz, and the hogy vagy. Looking forward to learning more.
I'm not sure why I'm seeing comments comparing it to Polish. Maybe there's similarity in the phonology or the accent, but Hungarian is actually of no relation to Polish, belonging to the Uralic language family, which isn't even part of the Indo-European family tree. Its closest relations are Finnish and Estonian. On a side note, it's cool that I actually knew these already. My grandmother is grew up in a Magyar community, and her parents spoke Magyar when they didn't want her to understand them. The first German phrase that I learned was "Hogy van," and she was more familiar with it than "Hogy vagy."
Languages are also influenced by nearby languages, they get new words, change their pronunciation etc...so it is only natural that Hungarian share some sounds with Slavic languages. I know Finnish and to me Hungarian has many sounds not found in the Finnish language (like B and those crazy S-sounds). Some of the grammatical features like the vocal harmony, declination of the nouns and the absence of grammatical gender and gender-specific pronouns are quite easy to grasp after studying Finnish, but I do not understand a word of written or spoken Hungarian.
Hát ez isteni volt! Nyilván magyarként nincs sok szükségem arra, amit itt tanulhatnék, de annyira magával ragadó stílusod van, Eszter, hogy most úgy érzem, megnézem a többi videódat is! ;)

I'm currenrly learning phrases and words via Dualingo :) Glad that I found your vids. They will be extra helpful! Excellent lessons and very clearly explained! I have been to Budapest several times and love to hear the locals chatting... Your videos will help me learn more Hungarian - Köszi... ;)
Thanks for posting these videos! I learned Hungarian from my great grandparents and since I don't have anyone to converse with. I have forgotten much of what I knew! Your videos refresh my memory. Now if I could figure out how to find the rest of my family that remains in Nograd County, Hungary that would be awesome! Internet searches have not helped me much! Can anyone out there have any suggestions?

Roy
You are so sweet. I'm sure your Hungarian friends will love it. And yes you are right Hungary is beautiful and I hope you get to see it one day.
Köszönöm! I'm hoping to study a masters degree in Budapest and this video has been so useful :)
Thank you! My family is foreign speakers and originally came from Hungary, and visiting my aunt to learn is very difficult at the moment. I've been wanting to learn for a long time and this is a great start!
Köszi! I'm totally in love with this language and it reminds me a little bit of polish (I also love this one lol). Thanks again 😉 kisses from brazil
say it wrong and it sounds like PUSSY.
Y10Q .😂
I'm from Brazil lol
Anyone from us?
I really love how they care about getting the accent down and everything as well
I’m part Hungarian trying to connect with my ancestral roots , and although I have no one here to speak Hungarian with (I’m American), I feel like I connect with this language innately. I love languages, and you’re a great teacher! Thank you! It didn’t seem hard to grasp at all! 😊
Hey 🌹❤️
Thanks This is very helpful. Some day I will get to visit the village my grandmother (nagy anu?) came from back in 1909. You are doing great. Isten velid

Thanks! wonderful language.
Eszter is beautiful!
+gotchacam Incredibly beautiful woman, and an excellent teacher !
gotchacam Hungarian women are the most beautiful in the world
My mother was Hungarian
Just looks a bit manly... square jaw and big teeth.
I forgot the straight horizontal shoulders and the higher painted eyebrows.
I'm not that sure that this is a woman. I'm pretty sure that it is not.
I am now in Budadapest for dental tourism, this has been very helpful already I have been using thank you (Koszonom) and also I found the word Please (kerem) very helpful in setting the mood when I attempt conversation. People are very amiable if you show you are trying to learn their language, its almost as though they are being complimented.
Very good. Today I start learning Hungarian.
malayu polyglot I am from Hungary. I know the letters and sounds but I feel too embarrassed to speak Hungarian because I am scared i'll pronounce it wrong😞plus I am going to go to Hungary in five days so I need to practice.
Gucci Llama How was your stay in Hungary? I'm probably going next year!
How's it going?
Thank you Eszti. I’m visiting Budapest in two weeks so I’m glad to have seen this video with your very clear explanations. Particularly the explanations on the sz, and the hogy vagy. Looking forward to learning more.
Great! Please do continue with this. :) You explain very well!
I’m currently in Hungry it’s my second visit here but, this time I spoke everything you spoke of in your lesson 😊
all cut race = alkatrész (part of smthg.); kithcen get neck = kicsöngetnek (bell's ringing)
+Zoltan Vasas The best ,I think..:Hole one a wait say? :-D
:DDD
I’m an American and thank you for explaining this I was actually able to say a lot of it
I'm not sure why I'm seeing comments comparing it to Polish.
We both eat cabbage rolls!
Thank You Eszter Gottschall, I am from Türkiye, and I want to notice that, all the sounds are familier for me...
Eszti sounds like Eesti - Estonia in Estonian :) Greetings from a Finno-Ugric cousin!
Hát ez isteni volt!
Nyilván magyarként nincs sok szükségem arra, amit itt tanulhatnék, de annyira magával ragadó stílusod van, Eszter, hogy most úgy érzem, megnézem a többi videódat is! ;)
I'm half Icelandic and half Hungarian 🙂
Yulp your father is from Iceland, can see that from the family name.

I'm currenrly learning phrases and words via Dualingo :) Glad that I found your vids. They will be extra helpful! I'm from Finland so I kinda got curious about Hungarian language and it's been fun to learn phrases these last two days since I started 😂 Ones I remember best are Hogy Vagy? Jó reggelt kívánok. Közönöm szépen. Nem jól vagyok. Nem jól vagy. Igen and etc.

You speak Finnish? How hard do you think it would be to learn for a Danish person? Also, what's the grammar like?
Str0ng_P0wer_Thancc another fin here lol, i don't think its that hard, we do have ö and ä but i think the pronouncing things is the hardest part because in finnish language you pronounce things very bluntly
I'm learning Hungarian now, your videos are really good - köszönöm!
This was so helpful, thank you!
very good teacher, I've loved it and I love Hungarian
hogy kerültem ide a vizsgaidőszak közepén?!

I'm turkish and it's so easy for me, i read 'viszontlatasra' at once ;)
Lol, Turkish were there for a long time as it seems in our hiss-story books.
but they dont' understand each other turkish and ungarian like finnish and ungarian, by the way its' correct say JO' REGGELT KIVA'NOK
I was born in England and have Hungarian ancestry...my Hungarian great-grand father taught me a few of these...nice to try them out again! :-)
Jesszusom, de szép ez a csaj!
Love from Finland ♥️🇭🇺 I've noticed during this video that Hungarian pronounciation is quite similar to Finnish
