The difference is that they can go slow in real life, take their time, put everything you want in there and do multiple sessions if necessary to make your experience as easy as possible. On the show, they can't do any of that.
I like Gian's tat better too, but if you look at them side by side at 14:35 Nate killed it on the detail, which was a main part of the challenge. Either that or it was another BS judging fix, which this show is filled with.
not true though. a real tattoo artist gets to pick what he wants to do or not do. if hes not comfortable, he wont do it. forcing yourself to do something out of your comfort zone is dumb, especially when it comes to tattoos. my main artist was a guest on this show and he turned down several of my tattoo ideas.

Tommy can only do Traditional Old-school and nothing else. NOBODY is a TRULY a "INK MASTER", it's just a metaphor for the show. Every artist has a specialty and cannot master ALL STYLES, not even the judges/guests.

Make sure you research your artists and don't go with flash off the wall. Work with the artist and get something that is yours. Sometimes people don't like the experience and one tattoo is all they get. Don't let it turn out to be a bad one.
Don't go with the cheapest or you'll pay double. Watch a lot of Ink Master, not kidding. Now I see everything wrong with my tattoos, like start and stop lines, circles not being concentric etc. and my artist can't draw. I gave him my idea (Death Eater skull with snake) but told him he could be creative with it. He google searched a design and put that on my arm.

He didn't lose because of the placement. As far as the likeness with the photo, Gian's was better than Nate's. And the client is not always right, as a provider of services it's the responsible thing to do to advice your client about the best decision for them and yourself in case anything goes wrong. Much more so for a first tattoo.
They're not being rude, the reality is that guy knows nothing about tattoos and was micromanaging every detail for a 6 hour tattoo. Tattoo is personal yes, but it's still an art and a skill. You have to put your ego at the door and compromise as a client, you're not the professional.

I watched a lot of ink Master, and the folks that are really strong each season stay strong and rarely fall. The worst tattoo artists usually just don't get better or honestly don't have the personality to learn from their mistakes. So they usually make up these complications. The artists who are middle ground rarely get the spotlight but I wish we would see them more. Side note: Ink Master is back on the air after being canceled the new season started this month so hopefully we will see new faces and challenges soon :)
People who micromanage every detail on tattoos are a pain in the ass because an artist knows whats best for a tattoo, you don't. They are not magicians, this is putting art on human skin and there are rules to make it look good and last properly. Gotta compromise a little bit. If you can't handle that then maybe tattoos arent for you, get a painting for your house or something.

Sure, they could've tattoed on scars or old people, but this way it was new to everybody and if somebody messes up the canvas would'nt have to live with it forever. It's an entertainment show, not a documentary.

People who are participating are aware of the risk because the counter part is free art. The whole point of a tattoo is the permanence of it and this challenge doesn't meet this basic principle. Also there are plenty other ways to show precision than doing scribbles on nails, this challenge is obviously not aimed for the artists to improve but for the audience to be entertain. That's all
