It is important to make a distincion between coaching and mentoring, but the difference is NOT as simple or consesual as you have explained. One distiction for some is COACHING IS NOT DIRECTIVE wheras MENTORING IS MORE DIRECTIVE. The International Coaching Federation has a very different concept of Coaching that you explained … i.e. no advice, no telling people what to do. There are types of mentoring: informal situations where the relationship came about in a more natural way, and formal, where there is a programme which creates a structur and maybe matches people mentor-mentee … It is important to make a distinction as each person will come into a coaching / mentoring situation with their own ideas, concepts and baggage. Anyone seriously getting into either, or both, needs to do some serious research and reading ;)
Mentoring: Chosen/Respected, Safe/transparent, Present/Available Mentoring: Advising someone based on your previous experience Mentoring: Receiving tactical advice and step-by-step instructions on how to achieve and result
